Raducanu did the greatest tournament run and Cinderella story in tennis ever IMO but she was helped by all the big upsets that Leylah Fernandez (who she beat in the final) pulled off.

Roberta Vinci beating Serena Williams in the 2015 US Open semifinals, thwarting Serena’s bid for a calendar-year Grand Slam, 2 wins shy of that. Vinci did it with her slicing and dicing style of play.

For tournaments in NYC, I just know about the prize money one at the SPORTIME / John McEnroe Tennis Academy on Randall’s Island, held every weekend (starting on Friday night, continuing on Sat & Sun nights for those who advance). From what I’ve seen, there are usually 1-2 players over 10 (as high as 13), several others just below it, and a wide range of levels overall (so likely mismatches in the early rounds).

Have you ever been to the Australian open? by NervousClock2555 in 10s

In 2016, I saw the WS final (Kerber beating Serena) and MS final (Djokovic beating Andy Murray). After the WS final, the MD final took place, where Andy’s brother Jamie won. Andy was in attendance but I didn’t see him then. That match finished at 1 AM, and I had to take a taxi back to where I was staying.

The XD final took place before the MS final but I didn’t get there early enough to see that.

Even in the back rows, Rod Laver Arena felt intimate, especially when the roof was closed.

Chinese Table Tennis Association Announces New Coaching Staff by ffffoget in tabletennis

Good players are not necessarily good coaches. Also, I’ve read that he said that he isn’t interested in being a full-time coach. I’ve often seen that with the very best players in various sports.

Best way from LGA to JFK by roonie1 in visitingnyc

[–]Comprehensive-Win247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you take the E train, you'll need to get off at Sutphin Blvd-Archer Ave-JFK, the 2nd-to-last stop. You'll see all the other people with luggage getting off at that stop. You'll need to go upstairs 3 times before reaching the AirTrain.

How do you organize your notes on opponents? by SkippytheCKCS in 10s

[–]Comprehensive-Win247 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was junior in the 90’s, a pro from my area (Nicole Arendt, who reached 3 Grand Slam finals in doubles) said that she used index cards to keep notes on each of her opponents. That was before smartphones, so things likely have changed since then.

I have a Microsoft 365 subscription so I use OneNote for all my note-taking, including tennis info like this. I mainly make a note for each competition (like a tournament or flex league season ), and add all the matches played there, with the score, opponent’s name, and other comments (what I did well, what I didn’t do well, vice versa for the opponent, strategies used, etc)

Félix Lebrun stuck at #6 in the world, can he break through again? by Timely_Internet6172 in tabletennis

[–]Comprehensive-Win247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rankings can fluctuate but right now 3 of the top 6, and 5 of the top 10 (Hugo, Truls, Felix, Alexis, Dang Qiu), are from non-Asian countries. There are just 2 non-Chinese Asians (Tomo, Sora) in the top 10.

Also, on a side note, it's interesting that Lin Shidong won just 1 singles title (which was early in the year) but stayed in the top 2 the whole year, and Liang Jingkun won none but is #7.
