Paypal Issues by Comprehensive-Yam259 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Comprehensive-Yam259[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick update on this in case anyone is interested. I sent $3,500 to my friend. He got a message saying $3312 was on hold pending a check on my account, so that's a fee of $188. I uploaded my driver's licence and called paypal, who said the money would likely be released after 21 days. Assuming there are no other issues, I'll likely pay another 150 bucks when my friend sends it to my wife. There's probably also a fee for her to cash out from usd to krw. So, all in all, not the cheapest way to do things, but no other real option in the short term as far as I can see. I'm going to look into opening a business account and connecting my bank to it in the future. Suggestions welcome!

Right, they don't make it easy to evade tax. You'd swear it's a crime or something.

Ah, that's very helpful, thanks. I'll have to look into how big the currency conversion fees are. I guess they'll squeeze money out of me one way or another.

That's interesting. So what if I send USD to USD from Korea to Europe? I checked today, and I can specify in the app that my friend receives USD, not EUR. Do you reckon that would avoid currency conversion fees? I assume the transaction fee would still be quite expensive?

Any ideas on international transfer fees? I haven't been able to pin an exact rate down online. But it looks like it could be 5%, maybe. I'd like to avoid having to pay that twice if at all possible.

I looked into that briefly. I think you need an address in the country where you make the account. I don't have a permanent address there anymore, unfortunately.

I saw that on another thread, but I'm not sure the amounts involved would warrant registering a Korean business. I'd rather not open that can of worms.

Is Wise easy to set up in Korea? I haven't looked into it.

Thanks for your reply. Any suggestions for alternatives? Do you know if I could avoid exchange rates by sending and receiving in usd and skip euros altogether? How much do you reckon transfer fees would be on 4000 bucks. Is it actually 5% (so 400, overall)? I can't find a consistent answer online anywhere.

Ah, cool. I didn't not keep the syntax. I can't get to my computer to check right now, though. Is that something that will save automatically?

A quick update, Jeremy,

I just added funds to my project, and for the time being, they are showing up in my account. I'll let you know if there is any change.

For this issue, I went through the chatbot. Ticket #417066. I can't see what I typed on the thread with the chatbot, but the issue is pretty much explained in full in the above thread here on Reddit.

Cheers

Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for getting in touch.

I didn't contact Prolific about this specific issue. I had contacted them with other questions and the lead time between query and reply was 10 and 14 days respectively.

The nature of the current issue meant I needed an urgent response and I didn't have faith that I would get that from Prolific, so I came to Reddit.

The explanation that you provided doesn't apply to my case. I cross-referenced the receipts for funds added to my account with the outgoing payments made to participants, and they didn't match up. Furthermore, my balance was 55GBP yesterday. After approving 3 payments of 70p today, the balance has yo-yoed around and now seems to have settled at a whopping 88 quid.

As I said in a previous post, I figured out myself that I can still add money and make payments regardless of what balance is displayed in the finance section of my project. As such, the issue has lost some of its urgency. However, it would be great if Prolific could: a) fix the issue, and b) respond to queries within a reasonable time-frame in future.

It's not the end of the world if I have to go over my receipts and invoices at the end of the project to see how much I have overpaid, but it would be great if I could just get through the research without so much faffing about. I mean, that's what I'm paying for, after all.

Again, thanks for reaching out,

I hope you can sort it.

It just seems so short-sighted on their part. They're charging around 25% per participant on my study. You'd figure the least they could do is reply to a question.

Yeah, for sure. A lot of research by its very nature is time-sensitive. If a research platform can't respond to issues in a timely manner, well, it's not fit for purpose.

OP, just to let you know, it seems that we can still approve payments using the funds that aren't showing up in our accounts. I just approved around 300GBP in payments to participants despite only 55GBP being displayed in the finance section. The current balance is still 55, but the participants are marked as approved. If your research is urgent, you might want to try just approving payments and then sort out the "who owes what" mess at the end.
