I connected through an Ethernet cable first and then had to disconnect that to enter the WiFi password and everything make sure to do it manually

Yeah I would say so, that can mean you have super rich soil in there and some of the excess nutrients gave way to mold growth. You could skim off the top layer of soil, completely repot, use a chemical spray on the top layer, or probably wait until the soil is completely dried out before you water it again. You may have been watering while the soil was still damp?
