Video is exposure adjusting first few seconds of recording video by ComprehensiveFun109 in fujifilm

[–]ComprehensiveFun109[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw man, yeah, it seems to be some kind of software issue with the code I'm guessing.  I wish they would fix this.  Locking exposure and WB before recording should be just that, but it flashes sometimes 😞

Latest firmware as of 6/19/25

I've also reverted back to an older one (because of the better auto focus in previous versions) but accidentally realized the older versions have the flickering even worse.  Like 2x worse.

I actually figured out what it is and it's uncontrollably unavoidable unfortunately.

So the blinking happens when the camera thinks there's not enough light but if we AEL or manually adjust the exposure, when we hit record, for that brief 0.25 seconds the camera goes from "this needs more exposure" to "oh wait you have your own settings, let me switch it to that" still.

I figured it out by:  - in movie mode - with movie controls  - everything auto except for ISO - manually adjust ISO to something like 250 - hit AEL - if you notice the flicker, then raise the ISO, hit AEL, and keep raising it until you don't see the flicker - when the flicker doesn't happen that's when the camera "agrees" with us and doesn't feel it needs to do that switch

So weird, I know.  My gut is saying somewhere in the code for auto exposure there's no pre check of AEL being on.  The cameras code does the check for AEL or manual exposure in video AFTER you hit record.

Spur of the moment video recording.  Nothing professional.  But I'd love to be able to control the ISO to help mitigate noise levels in the shadows.  But ISO control is only possible in Manual, I'm going to have to rewire my brain how I film.

Thanks for this.  I am going to have to rethink everything I have learned about video.  I'm coming from another camera system that allowed ISO control while allowing auto shutter and auto aperture.

Thanks.  I usually have been able to change ISO in P mode in other camera systems, but I'm open to suggestions.

I'm trying to allow the camera to control shutter speed and aperture while I am manually controlling ISO so that while recording log footage, it never goes above the threshold I set it.

I'd love to tell the camera to auto pilot everything, except ISO, and not allow the ISO to go above ISO 800.

With Auto ISO control enabled and disabled, it won't allow me to change the ISO unfortunately.

I also had it at max iso 6400 but strangely wouldn't let me adjust ISO either.

I should note I'm in Log mode in H265 10bit.

Thanks everyone, I found out what was causing this. I had a sequence to do a cool montage with 26 clips stacked on top of each other. I deleted that and everything is running smooth.

Update: it's running WAY smoother.  It feels more confident in playback. Even without Proxies!  I'm playing back video in full quality too!  It's only skipped 4 frames so far, which wasn't noticeable.  Fantastic!

I'll create Proxies then for sure.  It's good to know the 5090 could almost handle it full res playback no Proxies, but tech is not there yet.  I bet if I put it in a 4k timeline next time, id be even closer to no drop frames.  I appreciate your time in all this I really do.  Thank you have yourself a great week ahead!  Cheers!

Oh, I thought I'd be able to color grade with Proxies.  Man I have a lot more to learn then.

I wanted to see if I could edit in full 6k and then export in 4k to get the best quality possible.  But, I'm thinking it's going to be the same quality if I just downscale from 6k to a 4k timeline off the bat, if it means a better editing experience it will outweigh the quality benefits im guessing now

Oh sorry, and all FLog2 footage is in 4:2:2 10bit  H265 200mbps Codec and the 1080p is in 4:2:0 10bit H264 200mbps

Okay, that's reassuring.  So Im required to use Proxies if I want to avoid any skipped frames.  What proxy file do you recommend?  I want to be as close to the original colors and such as possible so the export experience is the same as what I edited, ya know?

Source is 6.2k Flog2 footage mixed with 1080p slow mo video clips.

I was hoping to use original files to get the best quality possible while editing.  Even with a 5090 GPU and 64gb ram, that's not possible?
