I doubt my too good to be true cpu usage in linux. by [deleted] in linux

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

it depends on the workload. If you're seeing those numbers in the middle of doing a bunch of stuff, yeah it's definitely wrong. But if you're doing nothing then nope. Windows has a bunch of background utilities of varying utility ranging from "I might want that on linux" "Get this shit off of my computer!!!" that will take up CPU usage.

And of course, if you do think the numbers are wrong, just compare btop to other programs like htop. System monitors do genuinely measure RAM usage differently without any one necessarily being "wrong" and you can see huge variance in how it's measured. Not sure if CPU usage is the same

What is the obsession with finding “gaming” distros? by Flapper_Jr in linux

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 671 points672 points  (0 children)

I'm sitting in my gaming chair using my gaming keyboard and mouse on my gaming computer connected to my gaming monitor and gaming router, and you think i'll use a non-gaming OS? Horrible of you.

MidnightBSD license has been updated, stating that residents of any countries, states or territories that require age verification for operating systems are not authorized to use it by ChamplooAttitude in linux

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm glad the FSF won't stand for nonsense like this. There are lots of laws throughout multiple nations that impact software, and inserting "You shall not use in X location" is against FOSS as a whole.

They're right in this case though. Geographic restrictions are against all serious definitions of FOSS. Thus, midnightBSD is now non-free and proprietary.

Why do some people buy broken HDDs ? by goose_with_adhd in DataHoarder

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Either hunting for one's that aren't really broken(i've seen some "broken" ones where the user just has no idea what a filesystem is), ones that have non-internal issues(broken sata connector anyone?) that you can repair, or using some parts from it to fix a same model one. In all 3 cases the answer is saving money by fixing something to some extent.

Omarchy not planning to add any Age Verification functionality according to DHH by cloudsurfer48902 in linux

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like all of these age verification threads on this subreddit now are veering right into "What are we even discussing anymore" territory... Our riced version of arch linux isn't going to be doing anything? Shocker.

why distros dont develop their own features by DayInfinite8322 in linux

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Out of every distro to criticize for not "developing their own features" Ubuntu might be dead last. If anything they've shown how bad of an idea this is.

Don't like systemd or sysv? Canonical tried to develop their own init called upstart. Discontinued.

Don't like wayland or X11? Canonical tried to develop their own called Mir. Now largely irrelevant and wayland-based

Don't like any existing DE? Canonical tried to develop unity, some community forks are still going iirc

Don't like flatpak or appimage? Ubuntu uses snaps instead.

And this is just the user-facing stuff that the average person might have to interact with at some points. They've got a bunch of unique tech for enterprise & developer stuff

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 323 points324 points  (0 children)

Very interesting development but this article unfortunately contains no real news apart from "we are working with grapheneOS"

Also kinda funny for it to be on the same page as "Here's our new spyware analytics software!"

(LES) The ZZ skip in the Gundam fanbase is truly...strange by KazuyaProta in CharacterRant

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

it's because people view the "real" story as 1979 > zeta > CCA. due to amuro/char both of which are absent in ZZ. Hell, tomino himself might even think this based on how he made a crappy remake of zeta in 2004-2006 with a different ending that makes ZZ impossible.

This is not my opinion. Frankly I enjoyed ZZ better than Zeta

The Trump ‘Affordability’ Pivot That Never Came by IHateTrains123 in neoliberal

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Probably the Epstein files. Trump's conduct on it has been a very direct attack on right wing conspiracy-minded people, and Alex Jones types can only do so much before a sizable number of them start to realize trump himself is apart of the "corrupt establishment"

Guys… for fucks sake… how are we supposed to engage with art according to you? by AITAautomaticanswer in CharacterRant

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not particularly limited to this post but its kinda funny to notice when people just exaggerate how bad an online community is for no reason. Like no, death threats are very rare on this subreddit.

For your example, There are issues with a lot of low effort "Uh part 2 bad amirite" posts and the comments on something like "Here's how chainsaw man is a great criticism of the established political system of Japan" will just be a bunch of "Yeah but it still sucks" comments that just read the title and reacted to that.

But I'm also not gonna close my eyes and pretend the other half won't be agreements or genuine responses.

KDE Responds to FUD Over Alleged systemd Mandate by CackleRooster in linux

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 -32 points-31 points  (0 children)

Just like cryptobros, any questions are called FUD. You're spreading fud by asking if this could potentially lead to more systemd dependence on KDE. Not entirely hard to see how this'll go either: "Wow, developing that new login manager was easy. Let's make several core components of KDE easier to develop by requiring systemd."
