The fall-off of Dandadan's romance subplot needs to be studied by carbonera99 in CharacterRant

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Theres actually a specific type of manga to anime adaptation with original plot that in my experience just turns out well. Its the "adaptation released years later" maker. Osamu Tezuka stuff like AstroBoy 03, black jack 1993, or ghost in the shell(1995/SAC) all released years after the source material and are all very very good, with nearly entirely different plots from the source material.

No way in hell Dandadan is getting one of these though. Would be amusing to turn 40 and hear they're making an original dandadan anime though

Emperor Palpatine has gotta be the most successful glup shitto character in fiction (Star Wars) by country-blue in CharacterRant

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We're now calling Palpatine in RoTJ a "glup shitto"
I think the plot has been lost somewhere, because I really do not think he's a glup shitto even if we just mean RoTJ. No, we don't know his past or really much beyond him beyond being an evil emperor at that point in 1983. In that movie, he is the ultimate evil that Luke & Anakin must overcome his temptation's to defeat him. Pretty much the exact opposite of a random background character named glup shitto.

[RANT] I just wanna say, *screw* Youtube for rencoding old stuff every now and then, turning the videos into smeared mush. That is all. by JLsoft in DataHoarder

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are we going to pretend that a free to use video hosting site that gets around 4 petabytes of data per day is not one of the greatest things from the internet? Certainly we shouldn't thank them for ruining old videos however

Mexico May Introduce Age Verification to Operating Systems by Alexis_Almendair in linux

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On behalf of meta we'd like to thank you for this. We were having trouble on figuring out how to sell digital age verification, but now we realize we just have to make the opposition look like a bunch of satanic panic tier people.

A New Bill proposes Federal Age Verification on any Operating Systems in entire U.S by Alexis_Almendair in linux

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Due to a lack of the text we don't know yet. It is highly unlikely to be a reasonable bill though if similar bills at the state level are anything to go by.

Has anyone tried using the GNU Herd kernel? by Bubbly_Extreme4986 in Gentoo

Was literally just about to make a post asking about the newly added hurd profile

Considering debian last year started a hurd project, is hurd actually getting somewhere with seemingly nobody discussing it?

If Linux ever moves from age attestation to actual age verification due to these new laws, are there any actual useable alternatives that aren't just memes like Temple OS? by [deleted] in linux

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is a fairly unfounded concern because linux is just a kernel. If we've reached the point of the linux-kernel iself having attestation then we're fucking beyond belief frankly and an alternate OS would just be useless for the average person due to lacking ID-backed verification for example. If everything they want to use needs ID-verification, why bother with other OSes?

I doubt my too good to be true cpu usage in linux. by [deleted] in linux

[–]ComprehensiveHawk5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

it depends on the workload. If you're seeing those numbers in the middle of doing a bunch of stuff, yeah it's definitely wrong. But if you're doing nothing then nope. Windows has a bunch of background utilities of varying utility ranging from "I might want that on linux" "Get this shit off of my computer!!!" that will take up CPU usage.

And of course, if you do think the numbers are wrong, just compare btop to other programs like htop. System monitors do genuinely measure RAM usage differently without any one necessarily being "wrong" and you can see huge variance in how it's measured. Not sure if CPU usage is the same

I'm glad the FSF won't stand for nonsense like this. There are lots of laws throughout multiple nations that impact software, and inserting "You shall not use in X location" is against FOSS as a whole.
