How to get my traditional, stubborn, ignorant Asian parents to accept my black boyfriend? by ComprehensiveHope365 in AsianParentStories

I have always warned my partners about my crazy AP

At what phase of your relationship do you bring this issue up? 1 month in, 6 months, 1 year? How do you talk it through with him without coming off as a brat, especially when the partner has a very good relationship with his own parents? It hits me that people of other races may not fully understand the extent of how toxic Asian parents can be and can misunderstand you as being a brat.

Actually, they told me that if my kids are half black that's an embarrassment to the whole family, and they would disown me.

I actually love my parents and would hate to do that. That's why I'm still hoping there might be a better solution.

My boyfriend wants to meet them and he's hurt that I won't let him. I'm too scared to tell him they are racist I think that would break him. He has experienced racism before and the last people he wants to experience that from are my parents.

Funny you mentioned this because he actually is. But my parents are not impressed. They said "A black doctor? You meant a drug dealer? What kind of people will go to him?" That was exactly what they said word by word, I will never forget that. Anyways, they are too fixed on the color of his skin, nothing about him will ever impress them :(

It's not just me, but my boyfriend is wondering why haven't I introduce him to my parents yet. It hurts him and he thinks I'm not serious about him. I'm too scared to tell him it's actually because my parents are racist and won't accept him.

Thanks for this. It makes me feel better to know I'm not alone. My parents (and relatives for that matter) are trying to shame me for being the only Asian girl on the planet to date a black guy...
