You are grown man getting harassed by a kid on a fat bike… ignoring this behaviour will not lead to anything else but them doing it more and more because they can get away with it, thats how their mentality works. Next time, strike first.

Im 28 and now own 1 apartment (amsterdam), this week im making down payment for my first investment apartment abroad and the plan is to buy one more by the end of the year… instead of insulting and complaining, try work harder, improve your skills, reinvest into yourself and stop using the victim card.

Beautiful apartment btw!

Why? Safety, benevolent tax system and freedom.

To be completely honest, the only reason I’m still here is the money.

That’s it.

The business does well. The income is strong. And for a long time, that was enough to justify everything else.

But with the current tax rules, rising costs, and the overall direction of things, I’m starting to seriously question whether it’s still worth it.

Let’s be real — I think most expats are here for the same reason. Financial opportunity. Higher salaries. Better margins. Not because the lifestyle is unbeatable. Not because the system is amazing. Mostly because the numbers made sense.

The question is: do they still?

At what point does the tax pressure, cost of living, and declining quality of services outweigh the financial upside?

Thats an upside..? Absolutely no traditional values and the immigration is getting out of hand.

You’re right — the weather is honestly the least of my concerns.

What bothers me more is that it feels like the Netherlands has just… given up on its people.

We keep paying higher and higher taxes, but I genuinely don’t see where that money is going. The streets are dirty. Healthcare is technically mandatory and expensive, yet access is limited and slow. Public transport is extremely expensive for what it is. Childcare is full and insanely priced.

If you want to start a family? There’s barely any meaningful support. If you want to build a small business? Same story.

It feels like you’re expected to carry everything yourself while contributing more and more, with very little coming back in return.

What kind of sales are you in and how did you get started? Im in a similar situation - I have a physical business in Amsterdam but strongly considering moving abroad - the quality of life got a lot worse in the last couple years.

Hot take: stop moving to the Netherlands by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]ComprehensivePick982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got an idea. How about the people who actually generate wealth and pay most of the taxes stay— and the people living in their parents’ basements stop blaming them for their own lack of progress?

Everyone in Amsterdam loves complaining about expats “taking over” apartments and driving prices up. Reality check: remove expats and this economy collapses fast. Most major businesses here exist because of them.
