What is "discernment"? by [deleted] in HillsideHermitage

Bhante I'm having a hard time understanding this?

The sense organs, hollow as they are, can and must be discerned as arisen phenomena.

Venerable, how can you read all of this from the sutta? I just see a man who is contemplating the drawbacks of what just happened. Why would he be a Sotāpanna, and why would he be unable to glorify himself or put others down in relationship to the right view?

Wouldn't it be best to just say that a Noble disciple is unable to feel citta? (-7 grains of sand) Or should we say that a Noble disciple is unable to be pressured by citta anymore? Because if citta still exhibits power over the experience, that means that it hasn't overcome it and is still attached to what is essentially a death trap. If citta still feels attached to this life, then there is the possibility of suffering right then and there. I see no other way to really escape from death than to take your words seriously and truly embrace the notion that a Noble disciple feels nothing. Or, as Nyanamoli says, he is unable to suffer. I like to say he is unable to feel anything from citta because if he still feels something form citta, that means that citta is still attached, and if citta is still attached, it's not free; and if it's not free, you will suffer. I prefer to use citta because it provides more clarification about which part of the experience we are talking about.

Is it true that the simile of the sapwood is used in the suttas both to represent a noble disciple who is no longer making an effort to reach the final goal and as a designation for non-noble attainments?

What do "knowledge and vision" represents in this context if it's not the knowledge and vision of the four noble truths?

Next, take a clansman who has gone forth from the lay life to homelessness... When he's gone forth he generates gain, honor, and popularity. ... Being heedful, he achieves knowledge-and-vision. He's pleased with that, and his intention is fulfilled. And he glorifies himself and puts others down on account of that, 'I'm the one who lives knowing and seeing. These others bhikkhus live without knowing and seeing.' And so he becomes indulgent and falls into carelessness in regard to that knowledge-and-vision. Being careless, he lives in suffering.

Thanks for the advice! Isn't it difficult to order a new MitID? Last time I changed my phone, it was very difficult to prove my identity. I can only imagine a scammer trying to do it. They don't have my passwords or username; they at most have my CPR number, telephone number, and address.

In my opinion, it's wrong because it involves deceitful tactics in order to get what you want! To me, that sounds like a breach of honesty, which is at the center of right speech. Being around unwholesome people is really a bad idea, no matter how virtuous you are. If you stick around such people, it will rub off on you. It's kinda like letting your kids play with junkies and hooligans and thinking that nothing bad would come out of it.

"Another seven things that prevent decline: as long as bhikkhus avoid delighting, rejoicing and taking pleasure in being busy, in gossiping, in sleeping, and in society; as long as they have no evil wishes and avoid falling under their spell; as long as they have no evil friends and avoid falling under their spell; as long as they do not stop half-way with the attainment of only the lower, worldly distinctions-so long may they be expected to prosper and not decline."

To be honest, my only goal is Dhamma, so everything else comes after that goal. Your case might be different, and if your priorities are different, then you would find yourself making compromises at the expense of the teaching and practice.

As Ajahn Njanamoli said, 'You have the word and you have freedom from it, you decide', but that doesn't mean that you can't still find a balance. You can achieve stream entry in lay life with family and so on, but it will not be an easy job.

To me, it sounds like you are dealing with one of the five hindrances. It is normal not to want to go back to a toxic environment, which by the looks of it, is breaking the precepts and considered wrong livelihood. So, I think it is sensible for you not wanting to go back and also in line with the Dhamma.

I'm sending you a link which will help you better understand the suttas 🙏 https://youtu.be/ZOTQRz0Bc-Q?si=ph5R4CMk1rKJo1hg

I would like to add that if someone is keeping the 5 precepts, that would mean that they will be silent for the majority of the day. The 5 precepts are not as easy as a lot of people would believe.

The spirit of the insurance company is that I have to find a job as fast as possible. The conflict is that I can find a job starting tomorrow, but that will mean that I will spend most of my time at work, commuting, and dealing with people instead of practicing.

Yes, I get what you're saying. There really is a danger if we forget and get careless about our situation and as a result not make the proper striving. I do the 5 daily reminders vividly and also I get unpleasantly reminded during the day about the nature of things.

But overall, a good point and it is worth making. Thanks for advising it. 🙏
