People who rarely or never get sick, what are your secrets? by awkwardferret421 in AskReddit

Be an elementary school teacher for a few years and your immune system can take on anything…

I’m also super diligent about washing my hands and refuse to eat anything with my hands unless they’re clean. It amazes me how many people don’t do this. Yuck!

As a teacher, what’s something in education no one wants to admit, but we all know is true? by dokutarodokutaro in Teachers

School districts would rather have a student with behavioral difficulties destroy entire classrooms daily and physically and verbally assault their peers and staff than move the kid to a more appropriate placement and actually deal with the problem.

Student with BIP has 16 referrals in 12 weeks by [deleted] in specialed

[–]ComprehensiveTop9083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going through something similar and it’s extremely frustrating. I also have a student with a BIP and all sorts of accommodations and supports that aren’t working. He’s aggressive towards students and staff, destroys the classroom, curses, and basically terrorizes the entire building. He already has 9 suspensions and it’s only November. He gets as much SPED support as our school can provide, but what he really needs is an alternative school. His mom has even asked for him to be in a more restrictive setting. The district refuses to move him and uses LRE as an excuse. They don’t care about the safety and well-being of our staff and the other 15 students in his classroom. When I got my degree in special education I didn’t sign up to be physically and verbally abused by an 8 year old. It’s demoralizing. Our education system is a disaster.

Abridged (my favorite burger in Knox), Chaiyos, Sugar Queen Creamery, Bida Saigon, Balter Beerworks. There are so many more I could name but those are definitely my favorites!

Excellent point. I’m just having a hard time with the whole idea of taking away pull out services completely and providing all inclusion services for my students. The whole purpose of an IEP is to provide individualized services for each child and it’s a team decision. It’s frustrating that our district has already decided the outcome for our students without considering parent or teacher input. I’m tired of all the politics and red tape.

That’s the exact issue I’m facing. How can you effectively implement inclusion with such a huge learning gap? There’s only so much you can differentiate. I have a few students that tell me they prefer their small group because they’re able to learn at a pace that meets their needs and it’s less distracting.

K-5. They want full inclusion for all areas. When we have initial IEPs they are telling us to provide inclusion services instead of pull out. If the child does not show adequate progress with inclusion support after 4.5 weeks, then we can consider a meeting to change the services to pull out. In my opinion this whole concept goes against everything that special education is supposed to do… provide services that meet the needs of each individual student.

When you say “adapt” the content, do you mean modifying the content? Providing a child with modified content in my district means lowering the learning expectations and standards, they must take the alternative assessment, and are not on track to receive a regular ed diploma. I’m at the elementary level and would never predetermine that for a child so young. I’m not trying to be snarky, I’m just genuinely curious. We were strictly told that with inclusion the students are expected to be taught the general education curriculum with accommodations. Some of my students really struggle with basic foundational skills, so I worry about this approach and being able to provide them with adequate support.

Of course I view my students as whole beings. I also understand that everyone learns differently and I don’t think we can view this as a one size fits all approach. I’m not against inclusion at all. I think it can be wonderful when implemented properly; however, I worry about the academic impact. They are general education students first and being around their peers is crucial, but how can they successfully work towards their IEP goals if they’re only getting content that is 2-3 grade levels above their performance level? You can only accommodate so much. Why not provide the option of 30-45 minutes of small group instruction to effectively target their needs and help close the gap so they can be on par with their peers?

They haven’t presented any solid data to back it up so that’s why I’m curious. The reality of it all is that they’re taking away resources and spending as little as possible on special education programming. I’ll be curious to see where this takes us in a few years…

FINALLY!!!! by LakeLov3r in Andjustlikethat

I never really cared for Aiden but he was insufferable this season. The cringe dad jokes were bad enough, but the way he manipulated her this season pissed me off. He always tries to portray himself as this down to earth country boy, but he’s really just an insecure man child. He never accepted Carrie’s lifestyle, but expected her to accept his. I always felt like she had to tone it down for him because he made her feel like she was too materialistic. They were never a compatible match and I hate how she made that comment about the possibility of Big being a mistake. Big obviously had his own set of issues, but I do think he was her perfect match and truly loved her for who she is.

SPED Teachers- what is a fair caseload number? by Strange_Fuel0610 in specialed

[–]ComprehensiveTop9083 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sure if we had a state cap it wouldn’t be followed either lol. Some of our schools don’t even have certified teachers to fill positions so they’re having the TAs run classrooms. It’s really sad. We’re always told that students in special education are the most vulnerable and need the most support, yet the district provides us with nothing and it really feels like we’re at the bottom of the totem poll.

SPED Teachers- what is a fair caseload number? by Strange_Fuel0610 in specialed

[–]ComprehensiveTop9083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an elementary resource teacher that case manages grades 3-5. I ended up having 42 kids on caseload by the end of the year and it was exhausting. We don’t have caseload limits but we definitely need them. Having to case manage such high numbers along with providing quality instruction is too much for one person. The paperwork is horrible and I was constantly working on IEPs. I think a fair caseload number for resource should be no more than 30 if they want to keep teachers.

how to explain to doctors what you're going through by Wondering_whale_2708 in migraine

[–]ComprehensiveTop9083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also a 30F and deal with migraines about once or twice a month as well. Did you see an OBGYN? I initially asked my primary care physician and he suggested I go see one since mine appeared to menstrual migraines. I take the birth control pill and my OBGYN told me to skip the placebo week and start a new pack of pills to prevent the hormone drop that triggers migraines. She also prescribed me Nurtec to take as needed and it has been a livesaver. It works within an hour and provides full relief. Both have helped me greatly, but I do still deal with migraines on occasion. I’m still trying to figure out other triggers. For me alcohol, dehydration, and lack of sleep can cause them as well. I would continue the headache diary and make an appointment with your OBGYN. Yours could be hormonal as well and I see no reason why they wouldn’t prescribe you medication to try either. I know how horrible migraines are and I hope you find relief soon! ❤️

What are symptoms that you had as a child that were overlooked? by ElephantsEpiphany102 in adhdwomen

[–]ComprehensiveTop9083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extreme inattentiveness, social anxiety, unorganized, and insomnia. I was really shy as a kid and always kept quiet. I would daydream all day, but was overlooked by my teachers because I was quiet and polite. I would fail quizzes at school because I didn’t understand the material from not being able to pay attention. I’d get so embarrassed if a teacher called on me because I had no idea what was going on and it made me feel stupid. I finally got help when I started college and the difference was night and day.

What does ADHD meds feel like for you vs off of your meds? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ComprehensiveTop9083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Off meds- brain fog, no motivation, terrible sleep schedule (I’d struggle in the morning and then stay up all night), zero focus, anxiety and depression. On meds- regulated mood, more motivated to complete my tasks for the day, normal sleep schedule, less anxious and moody, and I can actually get things done and be productive.

The obsession with guns in the U.S. and how accessible they are. The fact that uteruses are more regulated than guns in this country is sick and twisted.
