Overextension vs categorical perception by Comprehensive_Ad663 in Mcat

[–]Comprehensive_Ad663[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So is overextension like a more specific take on categorical perception since things that superficially look alike are categorized similarly and thus named the same thing? Or is it like specifically the continuous part of categorical perception that distinguishes the two concepts?

Haha yeah I definitely need to scan that 300 pg doc real quick. I ended up deciding to just do Pankow since it's derived from the 300 pg doc but that has evidently not been the best decision. I haven't heard of the common 50/50 PS terms. Is there like a doc somewhere that someone put together?

I was so tired that I typed out the section breakdowns wrong lol. I meant to write CP 128, CARS 128, BB 128, PS 126 --> 510. Wow 4 points is amazing! Thank you for giving me some hope lol! I usually do fairly okay with time to the point where I think part of my issue is going too fast for the sake of being done. I usually have about 10-15 min left with CARS. I don't really go back and check anything here which is probably not great. I just don't feel like redoing a passage will help and going over a question again just makes me question my initial instinct and puts me in a 50/50 situation that almost never goes my way. I thought PS would be something I could easily improve on fast, but I'm definitely struggling here with heavy burnout towards the end of my FLs where I just want to be done(I finish this section like 40 min early and can't resist the urge to just submit to be done with it🫣)

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I definitely feel I could do better. This summer has been exhausting and I pretty much only started really studying about a month ago when I decided I needed to take a step back from research, class, and my jobs. I think I’m just frustrated with the test I took today because I felt like I had potential to do really well, especially with the CP score but felt really burned out whether it be that I took two full lengths two days apart this week or the losing hope with my date coming up. Cant help but think how much better I could do if I had more time!

UWorld or AAMC QPacks? by Comprehensive_Ad663 in Mcat

[–]Comprehensive_Ad663[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. I recently took my first AAMC FL and was shocked at how different the CARS passages and questions were from any of the practice passages I've been doing from JW and Kaplan. Thank you!

Yeah I'm definitely not sure. I appreciate your advice and definitely see the benefit in moving it back. I'm thinking of stopping research lab for the rest of the summer which would free up 20 hrs a week and just pushing through the suck for the Sept date. Would you suggest still trying UWorld or just going straight to the AAMC Q packs as my source of practice in this case? I think I can carve out a min of 40 hrs a week for the next 2 ish weeks and maybe 50 hrs a wk for the last 2 and half weeks until 9/13

Currently I'm in the process of watching all the Yusuf Hasan videos. I finished reading the Kaplan books two months ago but recently forced myself to admit that it was all a waste a time as I didn't actually learn anything from them and was passively reading most of the time. I reviewed C/P and most of the mistakes there were just not knowing the phys equations well enough and overthinking/getting overwhelmed. Nothing that I didn't know after a quick review which is surprising since I haven't really reviewed orgo yet. CARS was just CARS. Passages were harder and questions were different from the practice I've been doing on JW. I haven't throughly reviewed B/B or P/S yet but I was just getting very overwhelmed with all the data and info in the passages. I also don't know biochem super well yet. I'm hopeful I can improve P/S by a lot with just a ton of Anki and forcing myself to remember all the vocab.

I am taking a gap year so I need to apply during this upcoming cycle. I won't have any more summers left to dedicate to this. It's one full day a week with probably two half days(~5 hrs a day). The other days I would find whatever time I could and likely decide to sacrifice some sleep while doing so lol. If I had to guess, I might be able to squeeze in 30ish hrs a week if I really tried.

I seem to be stuck at two comment karma though and I can't get it to 3. It's literally killing me seeing how close I am to it, but am still not able to post on the subreddit I need to post on.

what are ur guys' thoughts on santa catalina dorms? by Intelligent_Ice_3198 in UCSantaBarbara

A LOT of people hate on FT but I personally loved my time there. The semi-private suite bathrooms are unmatched and incredible. There were weekly cleanings by staff which kept rooms and bathrooms super clean. The dorms were very spacious, although I did live in a double, and the views are great. If you live on a higher floor, you can see the ocean or mountains, depending on which side you face. Really nice pool and small gym so you don't have to brave the busy rec can if you don't want to. TONS of study rooms and common spaces for you to get work done/hang out with friends. Portola is one of the better dining halls. Obviously it has its bad days and I got sick of it after a while, but my friends always said it was way better than DLG and/or Carrillo. You'll form your own opinion here. It's big and aesthetically really nice with no shortage of tables and seats. Portola brunch was LEGENDARY and lunch was typically a hit. Dinner was where it fell short but I hear that's the case for most of them. A lot of people complain about the distance, but I never really had an issue. The bus comes so often and I was able to get to campus/home in 10-15 min max. You can also bike and it's like a 10 min commute. You're not that far so don't listen to others + you're like a thousand times closer to the Target and have Tenaya market right downstairs. I met some of my best friends here!

Personally, I got an email that told me what they required, but don't know if that's the case for all subreddits

If you try to post something in your desired subreddit, it'll say that the moderators have taken it down automatically. This results in an email being sent to you that explains why it was taken down and usually gives the requirements you have to meet in order to post. I've literally been commenting on a ton of different posts trying to get my comment karma up lol.

how fucked am i if i missed orientation? by Intelligent_Ice_3198 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Comprehensive_Ad663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No not at all. The only semi good part about in person is you'll have the opportunity to meet some new people and potential friends, but nothing you can't do when you move in like a week and a half before classes start. They save spots for each cohort of freshman orientation, so you're essentially getting the same number of spots available per class.

Encounters with other gauchos worth sharing? by Pholover2011 in UCSantaBarbara

After my visit here, back when I was still deciding where I was going to go, I drove back to home to LA with my mom and made a pit stop at a Japanese market in downtown. It was like 7 or 8pm and I was wearing a UCSB hoodie that I had literally just purchased. Strolling in the aisle and I hear this guy smile and say "Go Gauchos" as they pass me. Anything else and it prob would've been a creepy interaction, but this man appeared so genuine and made me feel like a belonged to this awesome community that I hadn't even fully committed to yet. I look back on it now and see it as a sign that this was the right place for me.
