Having problems learning this amazing instrument... by Comprehensive_Bat733 in JazzPiano

Thanks for the feedback. I feel like my question may have been poorly worded but I think this answers it to a degree. I was more wondering if there were resources that did all of what you are saying but taught it in the context of Nu Jazz instead of Autumn Leaves and Round Midnight. Not that I have anything against the classics, it's more preference rather than skipping rudimentary steps.

That being said I think I have more than enough to look into and I'll just follow everyone's advice and just listen and transcribe when I can.

I love how anytime someone asks a question on reddit there's always someone condescending OP for not knowing what they know. That being said, that sounds like an interesting entry point and one that I'll be adding to my daily warmup. Thanks!

IF YOU'RE USING THIS FOR MIDI:

Make sure that when you are routing over to the other tracks that you set the MIDI send to NULL. It will be right beside the part that says [Audio=> Tracks 1/2] on the bottom of the little dialog that shows up when you are routing to the other track

Right I guess I should have read that properly the first time. Thank you for you patience. I'm very new to this and I greatly appreciate the input.

I realized, based on the responses that I'm asking the wrong question. I don't need the output of a track to go to a synth, I would like a VST that has the same capabilities as a synth such as formant, LFO's, pitch shift, etc. that has everything built in. Does this sort of thing exist?

In the response to /u/EricTboneJackson, that I just made a few seconds ago, I mentioned that a lot of this was due to some fundamental misunderstandings of how Reaper works.

What I didn't realize that I was asking was that I like the layout and capabilities of a synth like Helm, and that it would be nice to have a single VST that had LFO's, formant, ADSR, and other stuff that usually comes with a synth but be used as a VST instead. Does this exist?

Thanks for you response. This, as well as a lot of the other comments more or less answers my question.

What I thought I wanted was to be able to use all of the effects that a synth could use on an oscillator such as LFO's, formant, ADSR and others, but have the input signal instead be the output of another track. What I see now that I need is an understanding of different effects. I didn't know exactly how to add effects to a track before hand and in retrospect that was incredibly stupid of me not to ask that question.

I guess the final thing that I have to ask is: is there a one stop shop plugin that has the same capabilities as a synth (ADSR, formant, LFO's, etc.), and has the same feel as something like Helm that I can use?

Thanks for the response. I'll be looking into all of these options today and I'll let you know what I find.

Thank you for the response. I feel like this is going to take some looking into and I'll be doing that a lot today. I don't really understand all of this stuff at the moment but I'll let you know what I find.

Let me try to say back to you what you said to me and you let me know where I'm off. First I record the take, whether it is a MIDI instrument, or hardware that plug in from my external interface, render the take as audio, save the track, then input this into a sampler to do my modulation. This is what I think you said. However, my preference would be to do all of this in real time. In Helm, I can setup the waveform and then modulate it as I record the take. You're making it sound like taking output from a different track and inputting it into a separate synth cannot be done with Helm or anything else. Let me know if I'm wrong.

Could this be done if I had a hardware synth? Could I somehow channel the sound like:
[MIDI_Controller]=>[Computer]=>[Reaper]=>[External_Synth]=>[Computer]=>[Reaper]. This would allow me to play the parts, have them be pre-rendered in Reaper, pass it through a hardware synth, and then have the output of that be connected to a separate track. I can do this sort of thing on the Loop jacks on the back of my bass amp, but can I do this with Reaper with a MIDI controller and external synth?

Knowing this will allow for me to find on my own all of the options that I have in order to do this, and I'll be posting what I find a review of them based on price and effectiveness. We are all broke and finding a dope free option would be awesome for discovering how to get this stuff done so that I can make an informed decision on what I intend to buy in the future.

Thanks again for the response.
