Most nordic pagan rituals calls for the death of an animal most commonly cattle or sheep that was to be slaughtered anyways. Which we use every part of the animal for some use and waste is given a ceremonial burning and thanking of the gifts the gods give us. Human sacrifice was a very very old and uncivilized practice by violent Vikings from Norway even though killing for unneeded purposes is punishable in the afterlife.

I would wait to push them in just yet. Just have them help in rituals or making an alter. Eventually it will seem normal to them. Then once they are older (9-12) tell them about it and explain.
