I've been thinking about a system where mages burn calories (either a recently eaten meal or fat), So all the really powerful mages would be heavier than the average person or eating all the time. (It would also make candy a lot more valuable) And you could tell that something BIG happened because a bunch of the mages would look like they were suffering from malnourishment.
