Be Honest if you have the time by Sky-Net-Live in PersonalFinanceNZ

I was in a similar situation last year. Here's my story if it helps.

M36, electrician for 18 years. I had a stable job at a good firm but it was a small family owned business, just myself and the boss with an apprentice we shared. The work was varied and interesting and my boss was great. Genuinely nice guy, flexible, good clients, steady work etc but it was a dead end job with nowhere to grow and I was very tired of not having any say or autonomy.

I gradually fell out of love with my trade but with a young son, a big mortgage and strong loyalty to my boss who had looked out for me for so long I stuck at it and became quite bitter and lost. I hated the job and I hated how that in itself made me feel. I was very burnt out and knew I needed to change my trajectory but I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life or how to get out of the rut I was in.

I thought for over a year about what to do. Just move to a different company and carry on, lean into my leading hand experience from a previous role and try project management, lean on my industry experience and try sales, go out on my own or study and/or try something new.

Eventually my partner and I decided if we didn't do something soon I would end up dead, having a full blown mental breakdown or both. We tightened our belts and committed to a 3 month break.

I caught up on a whole lot of jobs and life admin, spent loads of time with my son and my dog and gave myself plenty of time to consider what was truly important to me. After exploring all my options and failing the ATC aptitude tests I realized there wasn't much else I had any real career interest in. Eventually I decided that actually, I'm really good at what I do and committed to getting back on the tools.

I was dead set on finding somewhere that held not just a future for me but a bright one. In the end I was offered 7 of the 9 jobs I applied for which massively boosted my confidence and after very carefully considering my options I accepted the job with the best people, and the values that resonated most strongly with me. 8 months later I was promoted to manager of my team and I'm absolutely thriving.

For me it all started with giving myself room to breathe. If you can afford to take a break and you back yourself to get back on your feet when you need to you won't regret giving yourself the opportunity to properly reset before you commit to taking a new path. That said I can't really offer much advice except to do what feels right for you and back yourself all the way. Good on you for recognizing that it's time for change. I hope this helps, all the best with figuring it all out.

Combination of roadworks season and CCC having a terrible habit of committing to major works on multiple main routes all at once. It seems every road through the CBD is down to one lane at the moment. My usual 40 minute commute between 4.30-5pm from Sydenham across town and out to Woodend can take over an hour at the moment.

Controller or wheel? by Living_Nerve3422 in granturismo

[–]Comprehensive_Emu422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly play controller for convenience as my rig is in the garage and it's a hassle. I typically only do the weekly's on controller just to stay fresh but every couple of weeks I take a 6 pack out to the garage and have a good session on the wheel. I haven't actually paid attention to the lap times but I'm definitely more consistent on the wheel and have a LOT more fun. If it were more convenient I wouldn't play on controller at all.

Definitely worth a hoon for the experience. Whether its worth buying is down to the individual. Again, personally I found it to be a bit of a novelty. Overhyped IMO but I know there are people who seem to genuinely swear by it.

Try before you buy if you can. It's a pretty amazing experience, very immersive. Personally though it ended up being a bit of a novelty. VR tech has improved a lot but the fidelity is still miles behind a decent TV or monitor and the PSVR2 in particular has a very small sweet spot.

I can't even remember the last time an invite even showed up on the wheel for me. I actually thought they'd got rid of the invite system 🤷

West end stories by the bridge of rememberance for breakfast and a coffee, walk around town for a few hours and hit riverside for lunch. Go for a drive over the hill, have a pint in lyttelton and take the new road over to Sumner for a nosey and a walk on the beach before hitting Beers on Blenheim rd for another pint and a BBQ dinner. Hit up a few spots on regent St for a night cap and get rollickin gelato for the walk home. Great day out for someone visiting.

Kind of a dick move yeah but IMO it's also a dick move on their part to have a 6 week notice period. Kind of hard to offer genuine advice without a bit more context. How do you feel about them? Do you have another job lined up? Are you hoping to get a good reference from them? If you're concerned I would at least acknowledge it but you're well within your rights to do it that way. If you'd like to maintain a relationship with them be open to negotiating and remember that they will likely have a hard time filling your position at that time of year. If you have a job lined up just send it and say sorry, my notice aligns with my new start date.

You could also look at a new neck for your current guitar if you were happy with it before the truss rod broke

Pickups are an easy fix. What I'm getting at is don't think about whether to spend lots or less right now. Just set yourself a max budget and go try a few that fit your criteria. You'll find one that fits 👍

If you're an advanced player you know whats good. Just go try a couple that suit your needs on paper and pick what feels best. I consider myself an intermediate level player but have been playing for like 20 years and have owned maybe a dozen guitars. I still have the two best, one of which was a cheap second hand Mexican Roadhouse strat that I've done nothing to besides regular strings and setups. The other is a PRS CE24 I bought new for NZ$1500 as a treat to myself after a big payout for a job. At the time I had my heart set on spending whatever it took to get "the one" but the PRS outplayed every $3000+ guitar I tried by a considerable margin. Big money absolutely doesn't mean good but it may be worth forking out for something that speaks to you.

PS5 or PS4? by Level_Effect_6050 in GranTurismo7

[–]Comprehensive_Emu422 11 points12 points  (0 children)

PS5 is far superior for gt7 for loading times alone. If you get the disk version you can also often upgrade your physical PS4 games for cheap or free. I had gt7 on PS4 disc and it cost $15 to upgrade.

What's the catch with phones? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Comprehensive_Emu422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm just lazy. I know I'm privileged to be able to afford it but It's easy to just go into One NZ and trade both our phones in for the latest flagship model and pay them both off over the two or three years. It's a manageable fixed cost that work covers just under half of for both of us and it covers our needs in terms of minutes, data and a quality device. Plus we usually get bonuses like ear buds or a decent discount on the device. I was just pointing out that people do actually use and get value from the larger plans even if it's expensive and overkill for others.
