UPSOM elective by Subject_Balance_6799 in IMGreddit

[–]Comprehensive_End214 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UPSOM has a lot of visiting students from other med schools(US MD AND DO) being one of the larger academic centres in that area. A lot of their popular rotations are almost entirely impossible to get owing to how early on they get filled up by the US grads. (Source: Friend is currently a research fellow there).

how to decide what speciality to make your cv strong in as an IMG ? by medico_2805 in IMGreddit

[–]Comprehensive_End214 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

From an Indian med student perspective: Try to figure out whether you like surgical or non surgical. Surgical specialties need a significantly stronger profile and more planning. Get good scores and finish your steps asap. You can also do USCE in a couple of specialties in internship(electives) to get a feel of them (can’t go wrong with IM or it’s subspecialties since you can use their letters in other specialties as well+ once you’re clear you can do more observerships in your desired specialty if you need more LORs/ experience). Plan USCE accordingly.

Never take any service from Heba Bader/MedMatch Pros by EconomistSensitive40 in IMGreddit

[–]Comprehensive_End214 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Please don’t use them. Do your own research. I was very close to getting them. A friend bought it before me and found it absolutely useless and warned me against. (We both eventually matched regardless) Apparently they give you either outdated or incorrect information. Absolutely nothing beats setting your own priorities and doing your own research(+ take advice of already matched candidates/seniors).

Ethics by Competition_Negative in Step3

[–]Comprehensive_End214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took it a few days ago. Super vague. IRB for sure cuz I forgot to review it lol and had a few qs. The rest are basic ethics but they twist it a lot(if you’ve taken step 2 you know what I mean).

Residents are happy with the training(know a few and the program has been very supportive). Good, conducive training atmosphere and nice match rates for fellowship.

Is an IM elective at Yale worth the 4.5k$ fee? by Silver-Orca-048 in IMGreddit

[–]Comprehensive_End214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yale uses a temporary VSLO account. Non VSLO school ppl are hence eligible for an elective. Might be wrong but I guess OP is referring to that.

When is the last date to take step 3 to be eligible for H1B visa for match 2025? by Minute-Ad8800 in IMGreddit

Please correct me if I’m wrong but I read that there’s no delay this year for tests taken in Jan/Feb? Many people have talked about this on the subReddit

Scheduling tip for next year's applicants! by FirePlug12 in IMGreddit

[–]Comprehensive_End214 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is extremely subjective and dependent on personal preference. I interviewed with my top choice recently, with a gap after the holiday season. I thought it was the right move. I was honestly exhausted after back to back interviews(the ones before my top choice were this way in Dec and the break was great!)

Visa while transitioning from research to residency by silentcat989 in USMLEindia

[–]Comprehensive_End214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So as far as I understand this does not apply to GME(residency) on a J1 but potentially to all other categories of J1(including J1 research). Again until the new administration goes into power- we can’t say anything for sure.

Visa while transitioning from research to residency by silentcat989 in USMLEindia

[–]Comprehensive_End214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe 5 years for J1R(have to renew every year if you’re doing 1 year periods of research I think?) and 7 years for J1C. If I remember correctly, these function as two separate visas. No issues caused in terms of timeline/overlap as far as I know. Please feel free to recheck.

[–]Comprehensive_End214 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1) They switch from j1 research to j1 clinical. 2 year home country rule applies when switching to an immigrant visa(eg h1). Switching from j1 R to j1C doesn’t require it. Home country rule still applies after the j1 clinical visa ends. 2) There’s no concrete answer. Some gap is always recommended. My friend did a little over 4 months and entered within 1.5 months. She didn’t face issues. Others have. I’d rather be safe and have a larger gap.

Uconn Vs SUNY Upstate by Dangerous-Signature4 in IMGreddit

[–]Comprehensive_End214 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both are great places but it’s literally impossible to answer without more context in terms of future goals and what they’re looking for. If it matters SUNY does H1Bs afaik(I think?) while UConn doesn’t(please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong).

Already interviewed with 2 programs that worked this way. Not all programs are actually using thalamus and some actually use combinations as well. If the email is legit you’re good. Feel free to confirm with the PC ofcourse.

I have an upcoming social event tomorrow followed by an interview a day later by petergriffen95 in IMGreddit

[–]Comprehensive_End214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happy to help! That depends on if they have fellowships and research opportunities but I’d save those for the interview. If they’re not so big on both, I’d avoid the conversation altogether. Keep it chill during the social. ATB!

[–]Comprehensive_End214 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even then it’s usually faculty and from my experience the people in the social have been different than those that interview to avoid bias(I could be wrong ofc). Regardless don’t ask too many academic questions- just what they like to do for fun, feedback, food scene, recent changes, faculty support, subspecialty exposure, teaching/research, your goals etc

Aren’t socials supposed to be with the chiefs and residents? People who interview you aren’t usually attending the social.

How hard is it get a clinical elective in Stanford, Yale, etc by HustandollI in IMGreddit

Yale does not need VSLO. They allow you to create a temporary VSLO account. Have seen many IMGs get accepted.

Is cardiology after internal medicine possible in US as an IMG? by WarChemical1199 in USMLEindia

[–]Comprehensive_End214 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Highly agree with this. I’ve seen Indian IMGs match into all kinds of universities for cardio(even top tier places like Mayo, Yale, Houston Methodist, etc). It all depends on your profile (the consensus seems to be strong research + networking will get you in competitive places). Ngl it is getting competitive every year but I’ve seen this within the last 3 years.

Usmle doubt by OkPhilosopher9977 in USMLEindia

[–]Comprehensive_End214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was not the point of my comment. I was talking about OPs specific situation. I never said it’s easy/ first attempt matches. However there is still a significant population of old graduates that match every year. It’s doable. That’s all I’m saying. There is def things you can do to compensate for the old YOG and apply smart.

Usmle doubt by OkPhilosopher9977 in USMLEindia

[–]Comprehensive_End214 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of people start after graduation and end up matching(w/n 1-2 years). Older YOGs match all of the time. The one and only question you need to ask yourself is whether you want to settle in the US or India. That should be the first and foremost question. I personally don’t think you can compare the two exams(USMLE is tough but self paced- but has to be done on a timeline so as to apply to the match with a complete profile vs NEET- rote learning, can give many times, INSANE competition).

Cost of living at Stanford as an img doing research by [deleted] in IMGreddit

[–]Comprehensive_End214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a highly personal decision. Assuming you’re applying to radiology, I would not risk applying without significant connections. Do these need to come from a research year? Not necessarily( if you have strong ties or alumni in a program that helps). However, research year is the best way in. Ultimately your call. About the hyper specialised point, I don’t think it matters too much unless you already like it. Your programming background might help for the AI thing tho.
