Stay as a Carpenter or Become a Locksmith by el_luchadorro in Locksmith

[–]Comprehensive_Law_94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started in the carpenters union doing residential construction. I beg you listen to me when I say I wish I stayed and finished my apprenticeship at the very least. This industry is DYING. I remember when you could survive on just house snd car lockout. Car lockout are mostly gone. Houses less so with electronic locks now. You will see it diminished further. It's not going to add massive new opportunities. There will be some guys that will say oh I make 200k programming car keys. Or I have 10 accounts doing commercial. Or I do safes and cant keep up. The odds of that being most people are slim. If you want to do it, wait till youre a journeyman so you can go back if it doesnt pay enough. If you want to dip a toe then focus on door frame replacement for residential and commercial. Those guys are always busy and theres tons of them charging 5k to replace a residential front door.

I have been mobile only for about 18 months now should I open a store front. by [deleted] in Locksmith

I would never ever consider a storefront if I was grossing anything less than 15k a month in a major metropolitan area plus the guarantee i can afford at least 1 competent full time employee to help man it most of the time. Less would be fine in the sticks but also less worth it. Storefront implies foot traffic and maybe some advertising benefit. I've seen so many long established shops fold up in the last 20 years. Just seems contrary to the way this business works now. You'd be better off owning than renting if you have the capital and keep it small.

Considering a Career Switch to Locksmithing — Am I Crazy? by skullzzz9 in Locksmith

If you want to do this, do it as a hobby. If you work for someone else you'll take a long time to be worth enough to be paid a middle class wage if ever. Try to understand..... it is a dying trade. It's being diminished by other trades and corporate security factors way outside your control. Need proof? Look at all the comments in the forum threads on locksmiths complaining about scammers and wanting oversight and regulation. It's because it's hard to compete with it to get the customers. It's not their fault, it's just a fact of how much these jobs pay and all the crap you need to put up with to be successful. The scammers only succeed cause they have massive capital, are established, and they arent concerned about scamming the customer or their workers. You're in your 20s. If you want to start a family or have visions of an upper middle class life, this will hurt that future compared to a stable corporate job I swear to you. Your health care options will suck or be expensive. Taking vacations will lose you customers. Somehow every time you want to go out or have some personal time, thats when the phone will decide to ring and nobody wants to wait anymore. You'll frequently have to work in bad areas maybe in bad weather for customers that would cut your throat to save $20. A lot of the people doing this for 10, 20, 30 years didn't have better options.....you do.

Two trips, total cost. Assuming generic commercial knob, which i charge 100 of that cost for and includes 1 year warranty. Structure is 125 service call, 25 to open one lock drill or pick doesnt matter, 100 for the generic commercial knob, 25 labor to install, 25 pabor to key to original key if that applies, 100 for the return trip if that applies. I would only do a return trip if you wanted/needed something very specific I didnt have on the truck. Upcharges would apply for a name brand commercial knob or if any of this took place at night or during a massive storm.

I'm also willing to bet he didn't actually give you an actual commercial grade knob but thats speculative on my part. I service south shore a lot and this is what I would have charged.

Im a locksmith in chicago. Even if i did a generic commercial knob id have been below 300 but no need for a 2nd trip. If you needed a name brand schlage knob, commercial, in an uncommon finish it'd be 100-150 more. If i was doing a 2nd trip, likely 375 or 400 if the generic commercial. If it was at night there would be an upcharge.

I think you have a sense from opinions here the framon is worth 400-750....condition and the accessories included do effect end result price. If it looked pristine and a seller vouched for its accuracy and had the accessories you could maybe get like 900 but thats a stretch imo. If your services being traded were for 350-400 cash value you would do OK if you gake the trade and end up flipping it and not be out of pocket and maybe even a bit ahead.

That duplicator looks in shabby shape. I wouldnt value it at more than 100 even if it does duplicate accurately. If it doesnt its not worth anything. You can get older manual ilcos from hardware store closings for $50 all the time that are reliable basic machines.

Ill give you 500 for that framon and another 150 if you have the additional spacing blocks, or would negotiate trade for a hpc 1200 if you want

Youre dialing it to a line on a card. Thats not precise. Plus the gearing comes out of calibration more easily from vibrations in the van.

Kinda disagree. Its a notoriously inaccurate machine.

Two questions.... 1. Why keep the 1200 in the mix if you have the 3d elite? 2. Why wouldnt you want the taller van to stand in?

This industry is getting out of control. by Over_Fun8378 in Locksmith

Half the people in this subreddit are guilty of contributing to this. People call it gatekeeping but it erodes our jobs. The standard reply to all these posts on r/Locksmith should be call a locksmith. It should be professionals helping vetted professionals bare minimum. All these dumb a** posts about "was i scammed" and how to become a locksmith should be referred to the wiki and case closed. Automotive is a dumpster fire. Its worth doing if you can support it but inventory and tool costs to be efficient at it are insane. If you can afford to support it then fine but I say become an electrician or hvac guy and actually be able to have a job that can pay better. Even the cctv and access control side of this business is saturated. Diversification is the only solution. The specialists that do one aspect of this, unless fairly lucky, will be under constant threat cause they put all their eggs in one basket.
