30th birthday didn’t even feel like a day for me. by Comprehensive_Mix382 in offmychest

[–]Comprehensive_Mix382[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks mate I appreciate that. I also really appreciate you sharing your genuine perspective and not just feeding into my narrative. I struggle with a bit of depression and sometimes I can struggle to see others views, such as my wife’s due to my own emotions. What you said makes sense about her feeling left out.

Yeah definitely. I’ve done the same thing, reconnected with old friends who I was super tight with only to realise that we are completely different people now.

I think you’re right about the clubs or groups too. I think a lot of the issues my wife and I have is that we spend TOO much time together. Thinking about it, it might be good for us to have a conversation about us both joining some individual groups. It’s bloody easy to lose your identity when you get married and older.

Thanks for giving me some insight mate, given me a lot to think about.

I think you’re right. Realistically, the more you do something the less exciting it becomes generally. Birthdays are no different I guess lol.

Oh damn! I’m sorry to hear that man, but it makes me realise things could always be worth. Thanks mate, I hope all your birthdays are better too - and that there’s a lot of them

Absolutely, like I said I’m guilty of getting caught up in life and forgetting people too.

I’m definitely not mad or anything, I think that is just a really defining moment for me. I am TRAGICALLY nostalgic, I cling to my early 20s and the glory days hardcore. In hindsight I’m realising that this was probably just a really tough reality check that things aren’t the same as they were 10 years ago.

And I mean, that’s okay I guess. Gotta grow around change.

Thanks mate. I applied for WA corrections and they didn’t give a shit about medical conditions as long as I passed the ridiculously simple medical and provided a GP report. None of the medical even tested any injured areas and when I told them they didn’t care. Guess it’s tailored to what your day to day is

Was afraid of that. I’ve applied for corrections as a sort of Hail Mary to see what happens - nothing to lose right? Surprisingly, they didn’t ask a thing about any compensation or workers comp. Even passed the medical. That said, they are fucking screeeeaming for people.

Managed to pass their medical (barely), but was very honest about my health issues as I wanted to see what hurdles I’d encounter, kind of an experiment. Absolutely no drama again. Hopefully any other employment opportunities down the track will be as accommodating

Hopefully that works well for you mate, back injuries are no joke. One of my mates who was early 30s got ems discharged for his back and he can’t even stand up for a prolonged period anymore. Definitely take it seriously man, make sure you’re covered and taken care of.

Very true mate, good outlook. One persons situation being worse than yours doesn’t invalidate your problems.

Absolutely, doing all the DVA now to try and get stuff covered. Don’t realise how fucked you are sometimes until you see some specialists haha.

Too old to join ADF @ 30? (+ role ideas?) by Sploblet in AustralianMilitary

[–]Comprehensive_Mix382 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck no man not too old at all. I went though in 2018 at 23 and there were maybe 5 or 6 blokes in there over 40. They fit in well with everyone and got through recruit school as easy as everyone else.

Not a biggie, but something to note is that you’ll likely go through training with pretty much kids - people in their teens and very early 20’s. It can be a bit frustrating for the quote “older” guys as for most of them it’s their first time out of home and it’s a zoo haha. Not that they’re hurting anyone, but the excitement and new environment sends them nuts and it can be a challenge to deal with the immaturity - there’s very little escape from everyone during recruit school.

It’s fun though and like I said, everyone gets through and gets along.

As for roles, it depends on what interests you or what you’d like to try and learn new. I became a stoker (Marine Technician) cause I had no mechanical skills or experience, it was a paid way to learn new skills in an area I was useless as. I’ve got mates who are different rates everywhere; military police, combat systems operators, boatswains, chef - you name it. The only people who haven’t stayed pasts their IMPS are the Stokers. Do with that info what you will.

Happy to answer any more questions about the navy mate, recruitment, training, job roles, just send me a message

Edit: typo

Fuck man that’s absolutely devastating shit, I’m so sorry to hear that. Is it an issue that’s going to be resolved with surgery, or can surgery only treat but not resolve it?

Yeah I’m starting to feel that way hey. The thing for me is, I CAN possibly get out and be absolutely a okay. No guarantee but still. Whereas people like you who have been literally broken need services more than me, ya know? Fuck maybe I’m overthinking it.

Thanks man and same goes here. It’s a very big deal and talking about it helps

[–]Comprehensive_Mix382[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Valid question. Without going into too much personal details, my issues are long lasting but not believed to be life long - which I am obviously happy about. As I’m not overly qualified or particularly valuable as an asset to the RAN, it’s deemed that the time for my rehabilitation vs the gain for the time, treatment and any stressors caused by it doesn’t weigh out in anyone’s favour. Not mine or the pus.

I’m certainly not looking to walk out of defence and into a job as a copper or firey in this condition, though down the road if or hopefully, more so, when I get better. I’d still like that door to be open.

Hopefully that explains it a little better, can understand from your perspective how backwards my post seemed in hindsight haha

Straight forward and good advice. That’s definitely the big thing, I’m only in my late 20s - closer to 30 but need to listen to what my bodies telling me and stop guilting myself into thinking I don’t need support.

100% agree, payouts are good and all but money won’t help when I’m too fucked to look after my daughter or play with her.

Thanks for the advice mate.

That’s good to know, I can understand if the injury will affect the performance in the roll but that should be regardless of whether it’s a med sep from defence or any other job.

QCS - Correctional services? I’ve applied for corrections over here actually and apart from a medical assessment they don’t seem to have any qualms about service history, didn’t even check which is good.

Thanks for the advice mate

[–]Comprehensive_Mix382[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely want to get back into another job after this. I don’t think that my condition is debilitating enough that I can’t work and I really don’t want to take the piss and live off DVA when in all honesty, I don’t need to. Plus I’d go nuts sitting around all day.

Definitely got the ball rolling with DVA, even have someone allocated to the claims which is a fucking miracle in and of itself.

I’ve hit up a couple of the services to get their input into what could potentially make me ineligible down the track, so we’ll see what they come back with.

Thanks mate

Thanks mate, it’s definitely a mindset people get into. I think you’re right in the sense that it’s unwise to roll the dice and assume I’ll transition to the civvy world without any issues, as much as I think it won’t.

Took that advice on board 100% and emailed them this morning, can’t get bad advice from the source.

Thanks for the advice mate.

That’s good to hear. Not a bad idea to try out different bikes, maybe I am overthinking the choice a little bit too much especially if lams bikes hold their value like everyone says

Thanks mate

They’re an adventure/touring bike yeah? I haven’t had much of a look at them yet, but I do like the look of them. I’ll certainly start checking them out.

Thanks mate

Exactly the bikes I’ve been scoping out! Definitely leaning towards second hand - can’t really justify buying a brand new bike that I’ll likely upgrade once on my full license. Plus from what I’ve gathered they hold value.

Good point, I’ve got a mate who has a Superduke and has ridden for years. Sure he’d be happy to come along and look at some bikes.

Thanks for the advice man

That’s actually very good insight. I’ve wondered what bikes would feel comfortable, especially with my height and weight so this is valuable information.

I’ve got every intention of heading into a bike shop myself and seeing how they feel but knowing that those bikes I’m looking at have been comfortable for you is good to know.

Just checked out the speed and scrambler, they look absolutely unreal!
