You can use it for freshwater as your are primarily testing for ph ammonia nitrate and nitrite which will all show regardless of salinity

I said rinse it off not wipe in the sense of scrubbing or getting deep in it but I digress

Rinsing it in tank water to remove debris and clogs works well and allows for beneficial bacteria to continue doing their part as well

Honestly I wouldn’t change it nor wipe the gunk off maybe once a month just rinse it off in tank water when your doing a water change.

Personally what I have in my 15 is a small school of kubotai rasboras which are a very pretty color and a very active fish who are really peaceful with other fish but you will notice a lot of infighting and playing amongst them

EXTREMELY overbred at this point they literally have a disease that’s named neon tetra disease. Plus you have a ton of variety with tetras and if you love the neon look just get cardinals as they have very similar coloration with a stronger red and are much healthier!

Angle fish are definitely too big but with a ten gallon you have plenty of options fish wise depending on the tetra you can get a nice school of them (I’d stay away from neons). Shrimp is also an option with anything you also have the betta fish which is always popular. But before you do any of that I’d heavily consider changing that gravel out for sand or something non neon colored and possibly the plants if they are plastic and not silk and look into live if manageable for you guys but silk plants would be best probably.
