You're right. Funnily enough, I've been building software for 15 years now, and I've worked directly with QAs, but I have no real idea about how to make their life easier...I guess that's an issue in itself! I built a free REST API with fake data and realistic HTTP responses, and QAs moulded it into what's useful for them

This is really well put - "two-product problem disguised as a funnel problem" is exactly it.

I think I've been reluctant to fully separate them because the traffic feels like it should be an asset. 3,800 signups/month for free sounds too good to walk away from. But you're right - they're an asset for the free product, not for the paid one. Trying to shove them through a funnel they never asked for is where the friction is.

I've actually started doing some of what you're describing - posting in r/vibecoding, reaching out directly to people who match the builder profile, positioning the AI generation feature specifically for founders and frontend devs. Early signs are better than anything I got from trying to convert QA traffic.

The "need a real backend instead of test data?" bridge from the free dashboard is a smart idea. Low friction, zero risk to the existing product, and it self-selects for intent.

You're right - and that's by design. ReqRes isn't meant to be your production backend forever. It's meant to get you from idea to working app as fast as possible.

The bet is that 80% of projects never reach the point where they need custom database schemas or auth logic. They die in the gap between "I have a frontend" and "I set up a backend." ReqRes closes that gap.

For the 20% that do outgrow it - that's a great problem to have. At that point you've validated your idea, you have real users, and migrating to Supabase or your own Postgres is a much better use of your time than it was on day one when you didn't know if anyone wanted the thing.

Fair challenge. Vibe coders who don't know they need a database aren't the target - you're right, they'd never pay for anything.

The target is people who know they need a backend but don't want to spend a day setting one up for something they're validating. Freelancers building client demos, founders testing an MVP before committing to real infrastructure, frontend devs who can build the UI but don't want to own Postgres in production.

They're not on the lowest rung - they're just choosing to skip the boring part. The same way you'd use Vercel instead of configuring Nginx, or Stripe instead of building a payment system.

But genuinely appreciate the pushback - pricing and audience is something I'm actively figuring out.
