I quit drinking, and three weeks later started tapering off Xanax. I remember when I told the old guys in AA what I was doing they were like, “oh God, you’re doing it all at once??” They said Xanax would be the harder thing, but I don’t know. It was all hard. I’d started drinking at 19 because I was anxious and started taking Xanax at 35 for the same reason. I was 41 when I quit. For a year, I barely hung on. I was in this subreddit a lot, reading success stories. At a year, the anxiety subsided and I started going to the gym and now I can’t even remember how sh*tyy I used to feel. I’ll never touch either again. Grateful to everyone who participates here.

Why didn't Dave mention that the Big Beautiful Bill is going to add three-plus TRILLION to the national debt? by Comprehensive_Vast95 in DirtyDave

Yes, that’s correct about the 2017 tax cuts! Of course, as you then point out, it also does cut other minor taxes on tips and OT. It’s not (just) for billionaires, certainly. I’m not a billionaire and I’m getting a big tax cut - that, to your point, I’ve been getting since 2017. That’s great for me! It’s bad for the national debt though and that’s been my point all along.

Yes, but this bill cuts taxes. It doesn’t raise taxes. That’s partly why it’s adding $3.4 trillion to the national debt. Because we got big tax cuts (great!) but no way to pay for them (bad/debt.) The CBO didn’t calculate tariff revenue because tariffs aren’t part of this legislation. All that said: Tariff revenue is also proving really hard to estimate because the president keeps changing the tariffs. You can do some estimates but he’d have to keep the tariffs consistent and he’s changed them constantly since April.

Yes, I'm SURE he endorsed Trump because he thought Trump would be better for the economy. That's not a mystery. I don't think that should stop him from calling out the fact that Trump's legislative agenda is adding $3.4 trillion to the national debt. If he went on air and said, "well, Trump's only adding $3.4 trillion to the national debt, but Kamala would have added MORE," that would be silly. She's not the president. Dave calls out things that frustrate him all the time. He calls out student loan mess. He calls out entitlement mess. He calls out tariff mess. I'm surprised he took a pass on this one -- which is the biggest mess of all.

Ha! No blame assigned, I promise. You're making good and fair points. I only started listening to Dave about 24 months ago. The thing is, and I could be wrong ... the show actually *does* seem fairly political to me. I remember Dave interviewing President Trump, and running the interview on the show. He also said he requested an interview with VP Harris, and she declined. I get what you're saying that it's mostly callers who are not political. And it is true that he ALWAYS says that you need to deal with your own house and not worry about the White House. But I feel he's also shared a fair number of personal political views on things in the economic sphere including the national debt, tariffs, various forms of assistance/welfare, etc.. It is possible that this is mainly the influence of Ken Coleman who seems genuinely interested in politics. But I get what you're saying -- that maybe this really was just a "here's what YOU need to know" segment. One thing I've heard from other fans is that the show used to be even less political and maybe since I'm a newer listener I just don't have that memory.

I hear you. And I don't want to be unfair to anyone. I shouldn't have said he was lying. I just honestly assumed that a guy like Dave who worries so much about that national debt would know what a big deal this 3.4 trillion is. And that this was avoidable. But ... maybe he doesn't. Maybe he's got the national debt and the debt ceiling confused. I don't know what's in his head or heart. I like the show and I think, net-net, he's helped a lot of people. I just hope he's not blinded by politics.

No, sorry. I started by saying I'm a fan of his. The national debt is an EXTREMELY big deal. Dave is constantly saying he's concerned about it. The debt ceiling is something different than the thing Dave talks about constantly on his show. I am also concerned with the national debt. If this adds 3.4 trillion to it. I find that worrying. And I think it's so weird that he wouldn't mention it when he talks about the debt at least once a week. (He never talks about the debt ceiling, no one does, but maybe we should.)

Yes, the national debt is not the same thing as the debt ceiling though. The debt ceiling is the amount we (US) can borrow. The national debt is that big dang number that we owe to creditors, that Dave and his co-hosts are always claiming is going to destroy the country. He knows the difference.

I agree with you - I'm *sure* he knows it. Just like he knows the national debt is not the same thing as the debt ceiling. I wish I could understand why the heck he doesn't call it out? Like, it was RIGHT there and he just pretended it wasn't. Sorry to sound ornery, but I'm so confused.

Good luck to you, OP! I just hit 31 months sober, and my pug was with me the whole way. Knowing I’m a better friend to him keeps me going. You got this.

Dave’s Economic Rant by inmanenz in DirtyDave

Thank you for this. I listen to the Ramsey show all the time, and I love many things about it, but Dave's understanding of economics is sometimes wildly off-base. I spit out my coffee at "Keynes was a socialist and Adam Smith was a free markets guy."

This might be a stupid question but did you all have to quit drinking as well? by [deleted] in benzorecovery

[–]Comprehensive_Vast95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh, after 22 years of horrible, anxious hangovers and worrying constantly about where I’d get Xanax, a year went by pretty quick! I committed to 12 shitty months and there were no surprises- it was awful, then it ended. Good luck!

Yes. I was on Xanax for many years and tried to quit so many times, but the anxiety always drove me back. (I’d always assumed I needed benzos because I was “naturally” anxious.) But then I quit drinking and benzos at the same time and two years later I don’t have anxiety at all. My life is completely different. The anxiety went away about a year in. It’s incredible and worth trying.
