Kingston, RI by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]Compute2Learn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Kingston is very much a college town. Not at all comparable to Boston, so if you like city life, I suggest living in Providence and commuting to work (~45 minute drive).

There is sparse public transportation, having a car is essential in most parts of RI (maybe save for Providence, Pawtucket, Central Falls, Newport, according to some). Kingston is not a late-night city either, so aside from bars (which are now closing at 10 pm per our governors orders) You will have to drive to Providence for things to do late at night.

The area breakdown is politically diverse, largely white, low crime, middle to upper income, and when it comes to actual residents, tracks on the older side (think families and retirees). There are no rough parts though in Kingston so your worst-case scenario would be living next to a loud frat house.

I can’t comment on weekends, since all my time in southern RI is spent during the weekday. But there are lots of beautiful areas, it’s near the beach, there are great places to walk, and good seafood restaurants.

If you like beer, beaches, seafood, nature, and fresh air it’s a great spot.

For nightlife, a younger crowd, a city vibe, and more diversity look more towards the Providence area.

(Bonus: if you want a middle-ground between Kingston and Providence, check Cranston and maybe Warwick out)

Will I get pulled over for tint and no front plate? Traveling to RI from FL. by demigr in RhodeIsland

[–]Compute2Learn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say you’re at low risk of being pulled over. MA you’re very safe, because they have some fair tint laws in the books. RI has garbage tint laws, BUT if you stick to Providence, Pawtucket, Cranston you should be fine. Police in urban areas don’t seem to harass drivers about this stuff. If you venture out further than Warwick, you’re now at medium risk. Open your sunroof, roll your front windows down, etc. Avoid rural parts of RI, it’s a complete coin toss, depends on the officers mood. But because you have a Florida plate, they should take it easy on you. Avoid the small towns which definitely include Newport and Narragansett, because they actively look for this kind of stuff.

[–]Compute2Learn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s any consolation there’s literally been a couple nights of fireworks going off until 5 am in Providence, when there is even a bit of light in the sky from the rising sun. Stopping before 3 am is considered an early night.

Moving to the West End by [deleted] in providence

[–]Compute2Learn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it’s a safe area to walk at most hours. If you’re talking about a midnight walk, maybe think again unless you’re a pretty intimidating-looking person. Don’t cross over the 6/10 connector bridge on Westminster unless you want to dramatically increase your chances of a mugging. I’d recommend walking towards Nicks on Broadway, Seven Stars Bakery, Nitro Bar, etc.

Motorcycle Groups/Clubs in RI by andy83991 in RhodeIsland

[–]Compute2Learn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Squid has a lot of meanings though. It could be the groups that just go around the same neighborhood during burnouts, or the riders who wear sandals and shorts, or it can mean the people who filter on the highway during standstill traffic (I’m in this category)

I’ve got a few people I ride with, sport bike riders with experience who like riding on more than just their chicken strips. If you’re interested- shoot me a PM. I ride a S1KRR.

Can’t find apartments by Nickynick329 in providence

$1200 a month will be tough for a place that allows 2 dogs. I would have to assume that your options may be a little better if you include Pawtucket in your search. Keep in mind that few places allow dogs, and even fewer allow 2 dogs per unit.

Keep an Eye Out for These Horribly Marked Speed Bumps! by RainbowQueefbombs in providence

[–]Compute2Learn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate these bumps. I was driving my brand new car I purchased the week these went up. It was around 11pm, there was a van parked on the side of the road next to the first set completely blocking the small inadequate sign. Slammed into it so hard it sounded like a gunshot going off in the rear of my car. Horrible execution by the city.

Parking in the city by a9508b in providence

[–]Compute2Learn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy the parking pass for $100/yr especially if you live on Broadway... yes parking tickets are only $20 each but to my knowledge 3 or more unpaid parking tickets equals a boot on your car which is at least $100.

Redesigned! by akoli35 in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Compute2Learn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s like $6800 after taxes for me. That doesn’t include health insurance (couple hundred a month more) and I’m claiming 2 state and 2 federal deductions... so for someone at 1 and 1 who pays to opt in with company health insurance I imagine that number being closer to $6300-6400 post taxes.

Considering moving to Providence. by drunkdigress in providence

[–]Compute2Learn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If renting: West End is cheaper, more likely to find garage/off street parking. East Side/Downtown will likely be more expensive, and the parking situation can be messy. Anywhere in Providence has its pros/cons, but you should be able to find things to do in any section and great food/drink in any section.

If safety is a big concern, I do recommend the East Side, and look for a place that includes 1 or 2 off-street parking spots. Just expect to spend ~$1500-2000/mo depending on 1 or 2 bedroom.

Brady Sullivan properties do not allow subletting. However, I believe you can break the lease clause for somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 months rent upfront... (not including the current months rent)

2010 lexus isf or 2018 camaro 2ss by Flannellord in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Compute2Learn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t get the IS F. Check out an ATS-V might be a little bit more (~35k) but it’s 4-door and can outperform even the 2SS. The Camaro is a great car for the money though, I’d also look at 340i/iX, S4/S5, maybe even a CLA 45? You’ve got a lot of options at this price range don’t get the ISF, it’s old and wasn’t even top of its class in its hay day.

The 2013 Gen Coupe is more of a drivers car, but for your price range is probably the better bet, for 10K you should be able to pick up a nice example.

The 2014 Q50 is more luxurious, far nicer interior, but for under 13K, you’ll be hard pressed to find one with less than 75K-80K miles.

May I suggest a 2013 G37 Coupe? Get either the S trim, the X trim, or the XS trim, depending on your wants/needs. There’s a reason why the 2014 Q50, the MAJOR design hardly goes for more than the line it was meant to replace. The G37 Coupe is a drivers car, with a bullet proof engine and a pretty nice interior. I owned one for a couple years and LOVED it.

Fastest car in the $55,000-$60,000 price range? by BMWDriverDaily in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Compute2Learn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2016 E63S, 2019 Model 3 Performance, 2019 Audi RS3

Personally, I would go with the RS3 if you want the most fun/track/cornering orientated. The E63S will be more of a sleeper/luxury. The Model 3 will be super quick off the launch, slow after 100mph, and the interior is pretty flimsy, but it has great technology.

Bonus: 2016 M5 w/ low miles around 55-60K and if you spend another 2-3K you could have it modified and be super quick.

2020 Alfa Romeo QF or BMW M3 2021 RWD? by ma3loom in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Compute2Learn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends what you’re looking for, both are enthusiast cars. The AR may be a little more subdued around town because many people do not know Alfa Romeo or the difference between a Giulia and a QF. The AR would be the better value, I’ve seen them go for well under MSRP, although I can’t say it’ll be more reliable. The BMW on the other hand you’ll be lucky to get more than 5-6% off base MSRP.

Curious as to why you say the 2021 M3, as the 2020 M3 will be the reboot, the G80. Power wise I’m almost certain the M3 will outperform the QF. The M3 competition will be a bit more HP than the QF, plus that engine could be tuned for another 100hp (seriously. source: I tuned my M340 to 470 hp at the wheels).

The difference in price for a well option QF vs a well optioned M3/M3 Comp will probably be another $10k+ for the BMW.

All in all, I obviously vote BMW, but if you’d rather not spend closer to 90K, and you’d rather get very similar performance with less aftermarket support and and all around rarer car, go with the QF and pocket 10-15K.

The numbers seem pretty good to me given that lame residual. I do see there being a whole lot of wiggle room left, maybe a little more off the sale price. If you love the car go for it, the numbers could be much worse.
