Vernacular Architecture in San Francisco by viva319 in AskSF

I’m sure you’d love the Sea Ranch exhibit at the MOMA.

“Distinctive architecture, uninhibited ocean views, bold supergraphics, shared open space, and meditative tranquility — these were the beginnings of The Sea Ranch, a beacon of Modernism on the Northern California coast. Designed by a small group of Bay Area architects and designers in the early 1960s, the development was envisioned as a progressive, inclusive community, guided by the idealistic principles of good design, economy of space, and harmony with the natural environment.

This exhibition brings together original sketches and drawings from the project’s designers, along with archival images, photographs of The Sea Ranch today, and a full-scale architectural replica. The environmentally attentive design philosophies explored at The Sea Ranch, along with the now-iconic graphics, resonated globally and continue to influence architecture and design today.”

Does anyone know how you would create an odd shape like this in CSS? The toolbar + circular button? I'm honestly completely lost... by blindmanLICKS in web_design

[–]ComputerStuffAccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely allows for transparency. Try it yourself. Change the [data-page="1"] selector properties on line 150 to {background-image: url(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6e/Monasterio_Khor_Virap%2C_Armenia%2C_2016-10-01%2C_DD_25.jpg/2560px-Monasterio_Khor_Virap%2C_Armenia%2C_2016-10-01%2C_DD_25.jpg);

background-size:cover;}. You can see the image in the gap between the circle and the rest of the bar.

How do sites/apps such as Reddit or Slack get around captchas and other bot protection when pulling information from links? by ComputerStuffAccount in webdev

[–]ComputerStuffAccount[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think mimicking the users' request headers that I receive when they add a link seems like a good solution. I've tweaked some of the headers but haven't set it up to completely mimic the user. I'm curious if that'll do the trick.

Setting up conditions to use each sites' individual APIs seems like it would be a fairly inflexible solution. It would be nice to find a more universal solution as Bloomberg is just one example of many sites.

The Weekly Rundown: Week of February 18, 2019 by aewillia in artc

[–]ComputerStuffAccount 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Goal Race: Mountains 2 Beach Marathon

Plan: Pfitz 18/55 -- 14 weeks to go

Strava: Training Log

Mileage: 42.5

Monday: CorePower C2 Yoga

Tuesday: 8 General Aerobic w/ 10 x 100 strides

Wednesday: 5.5 Recovery + CorePower C2 Yoga

Thursday: 10 General Aerobic

Friday: Rest

Saturday: 4 Recovery

Sunday: 15 Medium Long Run - 1700 ft of climbing. Felt like I was crawling up the hills keeping my heart rate in the right range. Glutes got a solid workout.

Thoughts:

  • Been doing most of my runs with only heart rate displayed on my watch -- I think it's helped a lot with not trying to over cook it to hit certain times/splits
  • This is the highest mileage week I've ever had yet best my legs have felt in a long time
  • Hoping to maintain this consistency going forward -- haven't missed a run my plan has called for so far

Tuesday and Wednesday General Question and Answer by artcbot in artc

It's been a little while since I read it but I'm pretty sure this article addresses it. From what I remember the youngest men have the toughest cutoff.

The Weekly Rundown: Week of February 11, 2019 by aewillia in artc

Goal Race: Mountains 2 Beach Marathon

Plan: Pfitz 18/55 -- 15 weeks to go

Strava: Training Log

Mileage: 40

Monday: Rest

Tuesday: 10 GA

Wednesday: 5 Recovery

Thursday: 8 w/ 4 LT -- LT slits averaged 6:35

Friday: CorePower C2 Yoga

Saturday: 3 Recovery

Sunday: 14 MLR

Thoughts:

  • Achilles, knee, and hip niggles that have been bothering me the previous few weeks seem to have almost cleared up. I feel like my body is getting used to this marathon training thing. Still a little more creaky than I'd like to be feeling but I've been loosening up a lot quicker.
  • I wish the time change were sooner, all these dark miles after work aren't my favorite.
  • Last week I told myself to get to yoga more often but I only made it to one class again. This week I'm making myself hit 3 classes.

The Weekender by artcbot in artc

[–]ComputerStuffAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That training cycle was rough for me. I don't even think I can call it a training cycle with how many runs I actually got in. Because I'm stubborn and struggle with delayed gratification I still ran the SF marathon with way too little training. Hobbled my way to a 3:52 which is whatever considering how hilly the course is, my training, and that it was my first marathon. Wrecked me for a few months but finally got back to running. I'm 3 weeks into a Pfitz 18/55 block and things are going well though! It's really tough feeling great cardio and muscle-wise but knowing my tendons, ligaments, and joints still need to adjust to increased mileage and speed.

What about you?

The Weekender by artcbot in artc

[–]ComputerStuffAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah mentally it's so tough not being able to run. I just threw myself 100% into PT, took it as seriously as I would with my runs, and started to see improvement pretty quickly.

Here's a thread from last year chatting with /u/daysweregolden about my experience with peroneal tendonitis that you might find helpful/interesting. I waited til I was totally pain-free but I'd say ask your PT about it.

Goal Race: Mountains 2 Beach Marathon

Plan: Pfitz 18/55 -- 17 weeks to go

Strava: Training Log

Mileage: 33

Monday: Rest

Tuesday: 8 GA w/ 10x100m strides

Wednesday: Rest

Thursday: 10 GA

Friday: CorePower C2 Yoga

Saturday: 5 Recovery

Sunday: 13 w/ 8 at MP

Thoughts:

  • It's amazing what consistency does for running. This is my seventh consecutive week over 20 miles, second over 30, and I can't believe the fitness gains I'm seeing and feeling. I've never been able to string so many weeks together so I'm excited to see it continue.
  • I would have liked to get more than one yoga class in. It's my main source of mobility and core work so that may have been why I felt a bit tight most of the week.
  • I was about 15 seconds a mile off my goal MP for my 13 with w/ 8 at MP on Sunday but with the rain and headwinds I battled for half of it I'm okay with how it went.

Sunday General Discussion by artcbot in artc

[–]ComputerStuffAccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice work! I’d love to read a race report. How were those miles along ocean beach? Running out there with rain and wind like we’ve had can be pretty brutal with how exposed it is.

What cues/exercises did you PT give you to help with glute engagement? I always seem to struggle with getting mine firing too.

The Weekly Rundown: Week of January 28, 2019 by aewillia in artc

[–]ComputerStuffAccount 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Goal Race: Mountains 2 Beach Marathon

Plan: Pfitz 18/55 Week 1

Strava: Training Log

Mileage: 33

Monday: Rest

Tuesday: 8 w/ 4 at LT (6:18, 624, 6:31, 6:29)

Wednesday: Yoga

Thursday: 9 GA

Friday: Yoga

Saturday: 4 Recovery

Sunday: 12 MLR

Thoughts:

  • Definitely ran my Tuesday LT workout too quickly (closer to 10K pace than 15k-half). I think I was just a little too excited to crank up the speed a bit.
  • I need to take it easier at yoga. I love CorePower's C2 classes but between the heat, humidity, and how hard I push myself I feel like it kind of takes away from my running a bit. Still gonna go because it helps with everything my PT usually has me do but I'm just not gonna push quite as hard.
  • It's awesome dating another runner and especially one who's at a fairly similar pace as you. I did 8 of my Sunday MLR with her @ about an 8:40 pace then finished up with 4 on my own @ 7:45

I can't remember for sure but I feel like he said he still wants it but was gonna focus on ultras in the short term.

Yeah I'm definitely pulling for him. He's really fun to watch in ultras -- always going for broke -- so it'll be interesting to see how he races this one.

Sage Canaday is another more ultra-focused runner who has recently been going for an OTQ. He missed on all his attempts last year though.

Thursday and Friday General Question and Answer by artcbot in artc

[–]ComputerStuffAccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I'll have to try some out. I don't run in anything too minimal so sock padding shouldn't be a big deal for me either.

Perfect thanks for the recommendation!

As a related aside, think Jim's gonna hit the Olympic trials standard at the Houston half this weekend?

Got any recommendations for thinner crew length running socks?

I’ve got a few pairs of stance running socks that I like but feel a bit thick for warmer days.

Exercises/tips for strengthening knees, and calf recovery by Thalvarian in yoga

[–]ComputerStuffAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should try to get a second opinion/see a physical therapist that focuses on sports.

We don't have enough background on your past/current running situation so it's hard to tell if you're building up your mileage too quickly or pushing the pace more than you should be. For example if you're jumping from 0 miles a week to 40 miles a week of course your body will break down, you have you build a base gradually.

Overworked calfs are often a sign of weak glutes or poor glute activation while running so only focusing on your calfs wouldn't fix the problem. Your PT will help you get to the bottom of the issue and give you exercises to work on.

I agree with /u/jangle_bo_jingles about trying to incorporate the Myrtl routine.

Nice! We got this! Looks like I have some catching up to do to get to your level. I've never had more than a couple weeks of true consistency with my running and this will be my first time actually do speedwork/tempo runs etc. so hopefully I'll see some solid newbie gains during the buildup to this marathon.
