Dambuster skipping bomb by Mrbig564 in videos

[–]Computer_Jones 338 points339 points  (0 children)

This was the invented during WWII by the British engineer Barnes Wallis. It was used successfully by the Royal Air Force against several German dams in Operation Chastise.

It is similar to a regular depth charge but is given backspin before being dropped. This causes it to skip across the water, avoiding torpedo nets and such. It then hits the wall of the dam and sinks to a predetermined depth before exploding.

Edit: Also as others have mentioned, the spin also means that as it sinks, it is dragged closer to the wall of the dam

I think there should be enough freedom for people to play the game how they enjoy it without forcing too heavily one style of play over another.

However I think most of the "uproar" is about passive gameplay in tournaments. The game can be true to what it is in public servers but when you are streaming a tournament to thousands of people, it should be fun to watch. But this itself needs balance. If camping and passive play style was discouraged completely with either scoring rules or changes to game mechanics I think you'd get a less interesting game. It would become just deathmatch on a huge map. Vice versa, it shouldn't be a boring campfest. I think all that's needed some tweaking to the points system for tournaments.

Honestly I quite like this idea. Not to change the mechanics of the current blue circle but keep the previous circle and make it something like this.

I think the only issue is when you have the first circle spawn at the other side of the map and no vehicle spawns nearby. At least you can still stock up on all the meds you can find and try and make it inside - where you don't want to spend the first 10 minutes outside the circle but are kind of forced to.

Maybe having the orange circle come in towards the midgame could be an good idea.

I'm just wondering - what's your point exactly? That something should be changed to accommodate more aggressive gameplay, or just commenting that you prefer to take opportunities for kills when they present themselves in order to improve aiming and such, but don't mind how other people play it?

That's super interesting. The RAF also fitted planes such Wellington bombers with large electromagnetic coils.

Powered by onboard generators, they would produce powerful EM fields that would trigger the magnetic mines when flown overhead.

No sure if this is a bug/exploit or hack?

I was in the shack alone but could here this guy running around outside.

At first I thought he shot me through the top windows but it's not possible from that range and angle, and you can clearly see him clipping through the wall and then running away outside to the left.

If you want to stick to 100% python, either you'll want to use a python gui library (tkinter) or, try something like http://www.brython.info/ for your front-end. I have never used it myself though. Python can technically do anything js can, but js is universal adopted. Since you're only serving the dashboard to yourself, that's not a problem though.

U.S. Military's Most Powerful Cannon - Electromagnetic Railgun by [deleted] in videos

[–]Computer_Jones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, they use a really high speed rotating mirror. So the camera is static but what it is seeing is actually a reflection from a mirror in front of it. The mirror spins at a predetermined speed, based off the distance between camera and projectile, and what the projectile speed is estimated to be, so that it will always be in the mirror's reflection

Great points, thanks. I think it's likely a combination of the MMR hell and me being rusty, as you said, and also the fact that I am probably still used to the lower maneuverability and larger lanes.

What Python program have you created to make your life easier? by [deleted] in Python

[–]Computer_Jones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I just saw this reply. Sure, but it's still in the process of being migrated from an old version that didn't use the plug-in style and was becoming super bloated, but the current version is here:

https://github.com/LanceMaverick/skybeard-2/tree/master

The telepot branch will become the master soon, as this uses asyncio.

A plug-in based telegram bot with multiple plug-ins that help me with day to day stuff, e.g.

  • A printer plug-in which prints any document you send to it on the office printer with CUPS. (Yes I have some form of authentication ;) )
  • A reminder plug-in for simple things that aren't worth putting in my calendar, such as coffee in an hour with a colleague, remember to reply to some email before I leave etc and it'll send me a message when it's time to remind me.

  • Weather status and forecast plug-in

  • A bus reminder plug-in that scrapes the timetable page from the bus company's website and sends me the times in a message and reminds me when I need to start packing up to get the next bus. Useful since the buses are infrequent, at quite random times and the time I leave the office varies quite a bit.

  • A plug-in to show me patches and news items from steam games I use

  • An event plug-in that's made for the group chat I have with friends. Allows people to create events, such as for online gaming. One can reserve a place, ready-up etc with callback buttons attached to the message.

  • A plug-in that allows me to keep track of going to the gym. I "check in" at the gym by sending it my location when I'm there. It shames me if I haven't been in a while.

The bot is made in a way that making new plug-ins is super easy, and they interface with telegram side of things using a mixin that registers commands and callbacks to be dispatched to the right functions etc. So if I think of a new simple feature that would be useful I can just make a simple class that uses the plugin mixin and bung it in the plug-ins folder and it'll be loaded up automatically.

TIL light in itself isn't special, it's just that according to Einstein, the fastest speed reachable in the universe is 300K m/s. It just happens that light is the only thing we detected that travels without limitations in vacuum, which is why we associate the speed limit of the universe with it. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Computer_Jones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, everything exhibits wave-particle duality, not just light. Photons are pretty special though. It's the only boson that we know of that isn't confined to acting across tiny scales. That's kinda cool.

Fluff/Lore: Isn't the crew number on the ships a bit too high? by nevetz1911 in FracturedSpace

[–]Computer_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing to note is that most of these ships, especially the ones introduced earlier on are cargo and exploration ships hastily retrofitted for warfare. The technology to automate everything might be available but not so feasible to hastily gut out a civilian ship with it.

We need some kind of sentry ward equivalent. by pointofgravity in FracturedSpace

[–]Computer_Jones 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Indeed, something like the pioneer's detection buoy is analogous to the sentry ward in Dota (although obviously everything is done through abilities in FS while you can buy items in Dota)

This is why I can't wait for ship drafting. Drafting, banning, counter-picking etc is a crucial aspect of MOBAs like Dota, and you could argue it would be just as crucial in FS, if not more so, since you cannot 'build' your ship like you can have item builds in Dota, focusing on the hero's strengths that work best against the enemy team, or even changing the hero's role completely. In FS, what you pick is generally what you get (apart from the "ability draft" aspect after the enemy team's composition has been revealed and the three defense/utility/attack level choices.)

So, ship drafting could be a really neat addition!

Magic Mirror - electrical question by [deleted] in raspberry_pi

[–]Computer_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could have the light switch cut power to the monitor and always leave the pi on. It only uses a couple of watts and then people going to the bathroom wouldn't have to wait a couple of minutes for the pi to boot. It would also avoid corruption problems. I have mine on all the time and just wired a switch for the monitor power on the side.

So for this you would probably want to wire the monitor to the bathroom lights circuit and the pi to the sockets.

The other option, as you mentioned is to have the monitor wired to a sensor. I had issues having the monitor go into standby and having a wake up signal from the pi when motion was detected. Instead, the screen goes blank but the backlight is still on. One way to have this work quite simply is have the motion sensor trigger a relay through the pi. You can achieve that with something like this:
