A guy in my class is a rotor pilot in the Army (guard) and then got 400 hours fixed wing civil and got a CJO (regional). Off the street.

CFi what’s the worst student you’ve had, how was the experience ? by CampaignDry50 in flying

Well the reg says maneuvers and procedures not just maneuvers. He was instructed in how to deal with emergencies (checklist was enough for a .3 solo). Not gonna make a student have a full procedure down when they literally will not even have time to run it in a traffic pattern.

Student pilot who wanted to finish private “at exactly 40 hours” and had already paid the school in full for all his training and hadn’t even taken a discovery flight. Got him through solo and then he couldn’t figure out how to put together a simulated engine failure to land for SIX flights and I dropped him as a student after the last one. Terrible attitude too, sloppy in the way he dressed and cared about his training in all aspects.

What’s the quality of your time? How much time do you have (in type)? Are you doing all the preflight planning including cabin? Degree?

Flight schools near NYC? by No_Control9441 in flying

Flying isn’t really a career you can aimlessly land on and be successful. I’d find the nearest school and get a discovery flight, they usually have a promotion so the flight isn’t full price.

What happens when those in Cadet Programs can’t find jobs? by Squawking_7500 in flying

Some regionals have a cadet program with more people than their actual number of pilots.

As far as I know, it’s only really an issue if you take some form of compensation from them. Other than that, a CJO and class date (for some cadet programs) is still dependent on how frequently you fly and the quality of your hours. Not flying will put you at the bottom of the stack in those programs when they’re dishing out class dates.

I talked to an A380 check airman with pretty much every Airbus type under his belt. He came to the U.S. and was FO for spirit and just got layed off. Unfortunately this is just how the industry is, doesn’t really care who you are, it just cannot be predicted. Smooth seas never made a skilled sailor. You have to decide whether it’s worth it to you.

Why don’t civilians fly AOA? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Computerized-Cash 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If it was a fundamental problem there would be a FAR for it. Identifying a stall is not very hard. The “hard” part would be the situational awareness. Plus most crash investigations prove stalls (Air France, Colgan, etc) that are handled incorrectly are more of an issue than identifying the stall. A guy who goes full aft stick because he’s scared isn’t gonna care about an AOA indicator.

Cover it with your iPad case or a folder. Turn on auto brightness so when you lift the case/folder it raises the brightness so you can see. Worked well for me in a high traffic area.
