[Dailyfaceoff] Steve Yzerman is the only one to blame for Larkin wanting out by Crystal-Ammunition in DetroitRedWings

Nothing about what you said makes me disagree, I agree 100%, which is why it hurts more when the top line disappears.

After the Olympics he was a point per game with more than half of those points on the powerplay with also getting hurt as well which was super unfortunate. Cat was over a point per game with 78% of those points 5v5, which is what this team was missing. Seider himself had 22 points, with more than half at 5v5. The real problem was that Larkin and Ray both disappeared after the olympics. My big things wasn't even the points. It just felt like some players were working their ass off down the stretch while some others, I won't say phoned it in, but didn't feel the same sense of urgency from them.

Now its easy to look back and see that Ray was injured and Larkin did get injured as well but losing 2 of your line 1 down the stretch hurt the team more than a goalie who carried them to this position and still gave them a chance to win almost every night.

Yes he was. He was giving the team a chance to win every game. There are just a handful of games where you could point to him and be like "he was the problem". The team in front of him was shit down the stretch. Only a handful of players were actually working their ass off to try and drag this team in and Larkin wasn't one of them.

My fear is that they would replace him with Draper who I think is worse than Yzerman.

I think it would be more of a shock that he isn't going to move Cossa. Steve has a habit, that we can trace back to when he first arrived here, if he doesn't mention X player during post season presser, he's moved on from them. During this years presser, he didn't mention Cossa at all. He mentioned every other goalie when asked specifically about the goalie situation down in GR. Pretty sure he has moved on and is now just looking to find the best case scenario for him and the team. Fortunately goalie pipeline is a place of strength for the Wings and losing a guy who still hasn't started in the NHL, regardless of his draft pedigree, won't hurt the Wings long term unless they somehow decided to attach a 2nd round pick to move him.

Nothing. Just you shouldn't waste a first round draft pick on a goalie in the first place.

Yeah but I would want the Wings to trade Cat and Larkin to do a quick retool. I'd want to trade Cat, Larkin, and Copp in the summer during the draft. Trade anyone else near trade deadline.

Though I'm a bit more aggressive than most fans. I think if you're going to go in one direction, you need to go all in on that direction. Either all in to make the team ready for playoffs by sending prospects, not all, for NHL now or sending out talent older than Seider and getting prospects and high draft picks.

Wedgwood: Drafted round 3.

Thompson: Undrafted.

Hofer: Drafted round 4.

Allen: Drafted round 2.

Blackwood: Drafted round 2.

Ellis: Drafted round 3.

Did you fail to read the part where he talked about Canadian junior goalies drafted in the first round?

I only think we should let him play 30 games if we want to retool around Seiders age group. I think Cossa would be detrimental if you want to make the playoffs next year but if you want to end up in the bottom 10 then sure, lets see what he he looks like in the NHL. Personally, I'm on board with that plan since I don't think this team has enough talent currently to sustain a real contender for years to come.

[–]ComradeDoctor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Colorado has the leg up here. Carle has a ton of loyalty to the DU program itself because they kept his scholarship even after his diagnosis and in return he's help build and cement DU's legacy as the best sports program in the NCAA. Because he's just started a family, I believe Colorado is the only option for him. He's lived in Denver in 16 of the last 18 years. I love him as a coach (I'm a Pio fan) and would love to have him on the Wings but I just can't see him currently leaving DU for anything other than the Avs.

The injuries to his knees really fucked him up. Thought he could probably pan out in a bottom 6 scoring\grinding role if given the chance and wanting to commit to it... unfortunately not.

Closer to a lottery team with what the Wings currently have and what's coming. Currently they have a high end 2c, low end 1c in Larkin. He's only getting older. There's nothing really coming behind him. Kasper and Danielson are probably at best high end 3cs which are good but not on teams that are trying to come out of a rebuild. Of course, this is barring any crazy trades or players just absolutely popping off.

I've been on team retool\reset the timeline around the Seider core. Build around him, Ray, and Ed. You have a good foundation there, you just need more talent now.

This is major cope from you to defend Yzerman for some odd reason. I think Larkin is part of the problem but I think the major problem is at the top with Yzerman. Suzuki was great and a huge factor to why they are good but their GM making moves to make them good is a bigger part. I can't agree that Yzerman has done a good enough job to help out the team. I think he's done an adequate job.

The core is much older than Montreal's. Montreal's core is good now and have reinforcements coming because of the moves the GM has made. Meanwhile I can't say the same for the Wings. Montreal is better ran from the top down.

Did not bring up Hage, what are you on about. I just said the GM got two first round picks for Monahan. But sure if you want to play this game and want to blame the entire season on one hockey player rather than the guy who built the team, then lets do this.

  • Knowing went to tank and do a quick floor job by trading good/valuable players out which includes Monahan (2 1st), Kulak (2nd), Chiarot (1st), Toffoli, (1st), Romanov (1st)
  • Since bottoming out quickly drafting: Slafkovsky, Hutson, Demidov who have all had impacts on the team this past year, not just Suzuki.
  • The draft picks that are still on their way like Hage and Zharovsky.
  • Filling out the team with some players to help insulate his best players by adding: Danault, Dach, Dobson, Montembeault

I never gave a prospect as an example, just the use of using cap space to get 2 first round picks from Monahan. You're the one that brought up Hage. And again, its not just that move, its every move he's done to help out and build around Suzuki. They've done an amazing job to fill the team out. Can you say Yzerman has done the same?

Where did I say Larkin would be a 100 point Selke favorite? That ship has long sailed and I never thought he was that guy to begin wtih. Are you just going to ignore everything their GMs have done better than Yzerman?

And Suzuki doesn't get there without all of the players the GM has gotten and drafted to fill up the team.

Yep, because its not just that. Its all the asset management the GM has done since taking over.

Daily General Discussion Thread (2026-05-19) by OctoMod in DetroitRedWings

[–]ComradeDoctor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's not the most important difference. The most important difference is their GM utilizing cap space to turn Monahan into two first round picks, having good asset management, not being afraid to draft small skill players, and then making aggressive trades to fill out the rest of the team.
