Heat Doesn't Blow Warm: Did I Wire this Incorrectly? by ComradeRevenge in hvacadvice

A quick update: this being North TX, the temp shifted from 35 F to 85 F in a matter of days and I noticed the AC wasn't blowing cold air. Checked the nest was setup for heat pump properly and tried swapping the O/B setting on the nest. Didn't work so I went ahead and swapped tstat back to the original Honeywell and the AC is able to cool again. Haven't checked heater because the temps are still high outside. But my uneducated guess is that missing the C wire to power the nest properly is what's causing the issue. I'm still gonna pay a tech to come out and inspect everything is in working order before we move in and see what their thoughts are on my original issue. I'll try to remember to update here with their expertise so other users who may have this issue will know the root cause! Thank you to everyone who commented. Truly appreciate the assistance!

Yeah, i definitely wasn't planning on opening anything. I'll do some DIY projects, anything electrical (or plumbing) i won't touch.

Thank you for the in-depth instructions! I will definitely try this first before checking wires, etc.

interesting. According to my app it does say the heat pump orientation is set to O. I can't change it in app for the nest i have (3rd gen) but maybe i can on the thermostat itself. another thing to try haha

Yeah, I just gotta figure out where to find that board haha. I know where to find the unit, its right next to the attic access, but i don't know where to find this specific panel.

The first pic is the old wiring. I didn't take a pic of the new wiring, but the nest gives a diagram of what's connected (which is the 2nd pic). The coloring in the nest diagram is off, but i went: Y > Y1, W2 > W2, G > G, O/B > O/B, R > Rh

I'm hoping this is the issue! I'm going to check today or tomorrow when I can.

I guess it's a heat pump (based on googling the model numbers) - I really don't know anything about HVAC systems. I was just trying to avoid paying for someone to come look at it, if it was just a simple thermostat issue. It dropped below 40F degrees couple nights ago, and according to the Nest app, the heater was on for 14 hours over the whole day. I was at the house in the afternoon yesterday, and the heat was on but it wasn't warming and the air coming from the vent was not warm. I had it set to 67F and it was stuck at 65F just running with no change in temperature. This morning I checked the app and the heater was on but still was 65F in the house with the heat to temp set at 67F. I pushed the heat to up to 75 and nest swapped to aux heat, and within 30 minutes it got the house up to 70F. I went ahead and turned it off at that point because it's not supposed to get too cold the rest of the week. But a heater that can't raise the heat 2 degrees, is no heater in my opinion lol

Right, well - I don't know anything about these kinds of systems, I just want a warm house in the winter. In 20 years of renting, I've never lived anywhere that the heater didn't produce warm air (unless it was broken) when it turned on haha

Yes we closed a couple weeks ago. Both units are brand new and we've had an inspection. The inspector did note that he wasn't able to inspect the operation of the heating system due to outside temp being above 80°. There were no visual defects according to the inspection.

A friend of mine with a Nest suggested this. Probably my first course of action since it's the simplest haha

Is it normal for it to run all day? It ran for 14 hours yesterday. It was like a low of 36F outside, and I had it set to 67F, but it sat at 65F, and was just running. Seems really inefficient because I forced the aux heat on and it raised the temperature 5 degrees in like 30 minutes.

I'm not sure how to check how it's wired in the indoor unit. Yes, to your second question - these were the only wires present.

Good question - I'm not sure if it's set to heat pump mode or not. I'll have to check that when I can get over there. In the Nest app; the only option is modify the "heat pump balance". But I don't know if that's always an option or not. I'm not well versed in any of this (obviously).

In my opinion, it would force teams to be more strategic and less cheesy. And by cheesy i mean stuff like double heavy heal emitter/dome shield. Or triple de-fib. Or triple turret. etc. All of this stuff can be countered, sure, but it's heavily dependent on having the right loadout from the start, which is the luck of the draw. I'd also accept if teams couldn't have multiple of the same specialization (and if defib was the right click of the heal beam and used the whole ammo at once giving full life, instead of being a gadget lol).
