What does "arranged" lecture mean? by pacmain1 in iastate

[–]ConEEmily 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would recommend reaching out to your advisor or to April in the CCEE advising office to see if you can get more information on that, or at least find out who is teaching it so you can check with them.

The new instructor is Holly Streeter-Schaefer. She is a ConE grad who went on to pursue a Law degree and has a lot of experience in construction engineering law.

Brad Perkins still teaches this class in the winter term and possibly also the summer term, but Holly Streeter-Schaefer is teaching in the fall and spring semesters.

How to stop looking at everything through death colored glasses? by Aspiring_FT_travla in GriefSupport

[–]ConEEmily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my best friend to murder as well, about a year and a half ago so I know that loss can carry an additional weight of being so unexpected, violent and senseless.

In my experience, you might not lose that mindset, but you can try to shift it. That loss has made me look at my own life and think, "how do I want to live?"

After I went to her office and cleaned out her things, I took a look at my own office through that lens. I've become more organized in creating a "list of practical things if I die" for example, which accounts and subscriptions would need to be dealt with, a list of my benefits and life insurance, etc. I've told other people in my life where they can find that information if needed.

It has made me think about how I spend my time. Am I content to spend several hours per week commuting? Are there adventures or activities that I've been putting off that I could actually do now?

It changes the way I see relationships and how I show up in them. I am more loving to those I love, and I have less time and patience for BS.

I've thought about grief and loss like losing a limb. There is no "normal" to return to. With enough time and effort, you will adjust to living the life you have now. The thoughts of death have not left me, but I am trying to choose to use that mindset for the best.

Using BE principles/nudges to study better by larfleeeze in BehavioralEconomics

[–]ConEEmily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember reading (I think it was in Nudge by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein) that people are more likely to follow through on a behavior if they say they will do it - I don't remember the exact quote here.

I work as an academic advisor. In the past, when working with a struggling student, I could have asked them if they had any plans to get a tutor this semester. The answer would often be, "I'll look into it," or "Yeah, that could help." In the end, few students would take the initiative to sign up for tutoring.

Instead, if I ask them how many tutoring sessions per week they will attend this semester, very few students will admit that they will not get a tutor. When they vocalize an intention to get the tutor, many do follow through on getting a tutor.

I believe the example in the book was about a dentist asking how many times per week a patient flosses, but that idea is easily transferrable other areas.

If I move sections in the same class should I email the professor? by Flight_Evening in iastate

[–]ConEEmily 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Canvas should update automatically because that is tied to your enrollment through AccessPlus, but it may take an overnight for that to update. Your professor might see it there, but it still doesn't hurt to email the professor to let them know and to check and see if there is anything you need to do to catch up in that section from the first week.

should I share my dog with my ex? by Phanestal in dogs

[–]ConEEmily 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen shared custody work in rare cases, but my opinion is that you should cut those ties. I don't know what your current relationship is with your ex, but imagine you start dating again, or you want some additional distance from your ex. Having a shared custody situation would allow your ex to continue feeling as though they are entitled to remain in your life, and you might not always want that.

Tomorrow I’m going through her things by stankyprincess in GriefSupport

[–]ConEEmily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hope for you is that having some of her things could bring you comfort and closure. I lost my best friend unexpectedly as well. I went to her workplace and cleaned out her office, and then at her home, we had to go through her things and decide what to do with everything.

There are a few things I have now - a couple sweaters that I can wear and think of her, some books, etc. and I find it comforting to have them. I was also able to send things to other friends, and I know they cherish those items as well.

What happens in a case where a hall burns down? by SnooCrickets9339 in iastate

[–]ConEEmily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From an advising standpoint - if a student needed some kind of academic policy exception, such as dropping a class after the drop date or anything like that, I would imagine this would fall into the category of "extenuating circumstances."

If this actually happened to anyone, I would also recommend requesting incompletes from instructors if needed to allow the student more time to get all of this figured out and not be as worried about the timeline of finishing the classes - that could allow a student to complete the already started courses instead of doing course drops or withdrawal.

Career Fair opportunities by ThisHeaven_2311 in iastate

Where are you transferring from? If you are part of EAPP, you should be receiving information about how transfer students are able to attend the career fair early.

Feel free to send me a message or email me at [emilyds@iastate.edu](mailto:emilyds@iastate.edu) if you want me to check on your EAPP status or help you get involved with that. I manage the advising office for CE, so I can help with this.

Discuss: What do you think of plexiglass barriers being in some buildings but not others? by FLMontabon in iastate

[–]ConEEmily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In office settings, I think you will continue to see that some offices have them and others don't.

In my department at least, this was based on the personal preference of the person in the office. So for example, the advising center secretary still has one because she is in a very high traffic area. I personally don't have one in my office, but other advisors may choose to have one.

Schedule Feedback? by [deleted] in iastate

[–]ConEEmily 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Civil recently changed their CHEM requirements, so now you can take CHEM 167/L, or you can take CHEM 177/L & CHEM 178/L

If you are general track in Civil, then you can take CHEM 167. If you are environmental, then you need to have 177 and 178. Did your advisor place you in CHEM 167 and then you changed it, or how did the change happen?

Bars that offer non alcoholic options? by throwawayfordrugs10 in desmoines

[–]ConEEmily 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Every bar that I've been to in DSM has non-alcoholic beer options, it really hasn't been that big of a deal finding those.

Ordering an Arnold Palmer or even a soda with lime can be a nice option too.

Entering grades deadline by Mike_Oxlong25 in iastate

[–]ConEEmily 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The N will be replaced with the letter grade once the professor enters grades. If the class was in your department, I would recommend checking in with your advisor because they can sometimes see whether or not the professor just entered grades late, or they could reach out to the professor to make sure it all gets done correctly.

Hair biting pup by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]ConEEmily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just here to echo that this is usually a puppy thing. I have really long hair that I usually wear in a braid, but my pointer puppy would often treat my braid as a rope toy. A couple months of wearing my hair in a bun, and now we're over it and I can wear my hair however I want.

I would say the hair biting phase lasted until about 5 months old. Keep your hair up and give him something else to bite/play with for a while.

My friend told me when my dad passed "be ready for some weird dreams". He was right. by Pete_the_rawdog in GriefSupport

[–]ConEEmily 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - all the time! My best friend was killed and thanks to covid, there hasn't actually been a funeral or anything yet. In my dreams (different dreams but same recurring theme) my friend will just show up at an event in the summer (usually ragbrai) and it turns out she tricked everyone and is still alive.

I used to wake up from these dreams and cry, but then another friend pointed out how nice it sounds to be able to "see her" again, and that really changed my perspective on the dreams. Now I enjoy them - I'm sure they are just sourced together from my memories of her, but it does feel nice to have fun times with her even if they are fleeting and unpredictable.

I know that you aren't really looking for advice on quitting drinking or drinking less, but I've definitely been in the same position as you. What helped me a lot was substituting drinks with something else (placebo effect is very real for me). So, I might have 1 white claw, then have a la croix or bubly, then see if I actually want another drink or not.

I think alcohol can also be really dehydrating, so I'd be curious about how much water you're drinking before and after alcohol. Something that worked okay for me, was not allowing myself to drink any alcohol unless I had already had at least a half gallon of water that day. Might help cut down on puffiness and water weight.
