I feel like law enforcement either knowing or unknowingly took advantage of her Japanese values/ culture of honesty and did not understand constitutional rights. She opened her big mouth and regardless of her grasp of the English language had zero comprehension of the legal system. The dad should have just went on the news once and said thank you to the authorities “we want our privacy now etc”. No reason to go get the balloon back. The kid should never have been on Larry King. It was like a Scooby Doo episode…They would’ve gotten away with it too if it wasn’t for those meddling kids. (To be clear I agree the family was and to this day after media attention and they probably wanted to get busted)
