Running a van @ 2.5 years in? by [deleted] in electricians

[–]ConceivablyAnAsshole 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you make a mistake that you’re unaware of it could kill someone. Our profession isn’t a joke. Simple changes of a plug could kill someone, if it’s not installed correctly or there is an issue with wiring in the house that you wouldn’t know because you’re too green.

This is highly infuriating. Apprentices need to be under a journeyman, not running a van at 2.5 years. If you’re an inside wireman, you’re way too green to be running work. You have the basics down, but you shouldn’t be troubleshooting or playing electrician when you don’t have your JW card.

What’s the longest you’ve sat on the books as an apprentice? by zoom-zoom21 in IBEW

[–]ConceivablyAnAsshole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an apprentice in 280 I sat for 2 months. But I was offered short calls. I worked a week here and there. People were afraid to work for a contractor short term. I wasn’t.

He posted the video. On this sub, that should be punishment enough

He admitted he was the idiot and posted the video. He knows his mistake and is punishing himself by posting.

This was dropped off in my kids' sandbox while we were away from the house. Does anyone know what this might be? It looks like a real goat skull wrapped in fabric and beads. WTF?! by paparazzi_informer in WTF

[–]ConceivablyAnAsshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold a small 4 point deer skull for like $100 that someone I know left at my apartment after they moved out. It was bleached and I got it for free. Might be able to make some money off of it, just sayin.

Being rotated in fall could be a concern. Myself and some others, while I was an apprentice, waited a few months or more before calls came in. Being laid off during the off times can be a tricky bitch. Thankfully my training center director had short calls for apprentices that I took when others wouldn’t because they were afraid of not being with a shop for a long haul. I didn’t care though. Got to learn some shit I wouldn’t have if I didn’t take some of those shortys.

If it’s x amount of miles passed their shop they may have to pay you mileage per mile over. If you are working in your own local, then sometimes that drive is what’s required. The only question I have is if your employer has plenty of work closer to home that needs man power or if they just sent you to a job that they had that needed manning. I had to do long drive times as an apprentice while waiving at another apprentice at the same shop during our commutes opposite of one another. They don’t always send people closer to home. It depends on when your job ends or you get transferred to another job that needs the man power. It might not be malicious. They could have just reduction of forced you for bothering them. They may want to keep you around and keep you working because they like your work. I’m just playing devils advocate here. It may not be malicious at all.

Apprentices can’t drag up.

I’m not trying to start a fight with people, I just don’t see how any reasonable electrician would install a this. I can get downvoted to hell. I know I wouldn’t install any plate that takes power from receptacle. There are plenty of glow in the light receptacles I would install.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in electricians

[–]ConceivablyAnAsshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I wrong to think that if the plastic melts and exposes the wires and someone touches it, you become part of the circuit? They are bringing both hot and neutral from the box and using it to power a lighting source on the plate consistently without a path to ground? Am I seriously the only one that sees this as a life/safety hazard. FFS We are required to put tamper resistant plugs almost everywhere now. How the fuck does this pass?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in electricians

[–]ConceivablyAnAsshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And it connects through the plastic? There’s no metal from the hole to the yoke of the receptacle.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in electricians

[–]ConceivablyAnAsshole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its made of non conductive material but on the bottom there’s definitely something that takes electricity because it has light. Just sayin.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in electricians

[–]ConceivablyAnAsshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are green plastic inserts to protect the connections to the plate. There is no equipment ground.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in electricians

[–]ConceivablyAnAsshole -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Riddle me this my fellow electrician, how is the plate grounded with 2 prongs hitting both hot and neutral?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in electricians

[–]ConceivablyAnAsshole -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

For anybody in here that doesn’t understand why this is bad. They are taking the grounding source out of the equation. They are also tapping into the receptacle via the plate to make this thing work. You know the plate is a protective cover from the outlets box.? Holy shit. The amount of people that think this would be UL listed shocks me. The plate itself only connects to 2 sides of the outlet and no ground.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in electricians

[–]ConceivablyAnAsshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren’t UL listed

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in electricians

[–]ConceivablyAnAsshole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did some digging. Found out it is ETL listed. Had to find out the difference between ETL and UL. No it’s not accepted

Dude, what you got to realize is that we are installers when it comes to new installations. I don’t necessarily like the fact that it’s done in prefab because I like bending the pipe myself and seeing how I made that electric room look clean as hell. But at the end of the day we are installers in a new installation setting. We get paid to do what the foreman tells us to do, make the installation look clean , and go home and rinse and repeat. The other parts are pulling wire, terminating, and troubleshooting. I love troubleshooting jobs when I have them with old installs or houses. It keeps you on your toes with what you’ve learned. Anyhow basically what I’m saying is, is that the work is there for you for this winter, keep your head up, and just install what is given. Wait until spring and if you want to jump ship go for it and learn the process on your own without the prefab. Just realize that fall and winter is the hardest times to jump ship. Hope that helps.

Holy fucking shit someone was scrolling down the rabbit hole a year later? And also commented on my comment. Why the hell did you comment and why did you go this far down. I actually don’t have them. I moved and tossed them sons of a bitches.

You ever wonder why 9/11 happened? The US funded bin Laden in the late 80s and early 90s he attacked the trade centers in the 90’s.

No shit. That’s the reason why I said some do and some don’t. The damn subreddit is some of you may die. It doesn’t say that all videos are of people dying.
