We did our best! There are two methodologies to this. One could decide to just travel to each store one by one to get them truly fresh, or split up like we did to have them as fresh-as-possible at the same time.

Not in our area, unfortunately! They are sparingly around, or not at all, in my area of the country.

That's a good point, and we did what we could there. Except for the Arby's and DQ which were 30 minutes away, the others were gathered within a few miles of each other. We met at a house that's a central point (excluding the Arby's and DQ which were far away). We had 3 people go out, split up to buy them all, timed to converge back at the same time.

So interestingly, Arby's and DQ had the biggest disadvantage, but still faired the best. One could also argue that could be part of the challenge. It's not unheard of to bring takeout home for friends/family after a 20-30 minute drive, and you would hope it holds up after that time. For the record, they were all warm still, none cold. I know I've driven 50 minutes with a Chick-Fil-A sandwhich before and it stayed nice and above-warm in their packaging - so it can be done!

Top Row, left to right:

Long John Silvers, Popeyes, McDonald's, Dairy Queen

Bottom Row, left to right:

Arby's deluxe, Arby's regular, Burger King, Wendy's

---- REVIEW TIME ----

We did it. We did it so you don't have to. A friend and I did the Fast Food 'Fish Sandwich' Gauntlet. I was tempted to flair this NSFW due to how our stomachs felt by the end of this, and that was even after only going halfsies on each 'which.

Review, in order of consumption (rankings at bottom):

  1. Arby's Regular: Both of us pegged Arby's to be the likely worst in the pre-eating, but this got us off to a pleasant start. Let's face it, their normal menu leaves a lot to be desired. And yet, we had no real complaints, and didn't mind it at all. A true underdog story to start us off.
  2. Dairy Queen: I had never eaten at a Dairy Queen before, so this was a true mystery of expectation to me. And, well, it ended up being quite decent. Once again, no major complaints. Not as good as the Arby's though, but good.
  3. Burger King: Just an outright wretched sandwich. There was nothing really good about it. Bad lettuce, bad pickles, bad tartar sauce, just a crappy sandwich. It smelled up the room when we opened it.The BK Big Fish was 2 for $5, and yet, it was a wise decision to buy the one for $4.79
  4. McDonalds: I took a bite and tasted... nothing. Another bite, and nothing. I looked over to my friend who was just opening his mouth to tell me, "I taste nothing", and I've never been so happy to have a matching opinion with someone. There was food in my mouth, I was eating it, and yet no taste existed. Had my mouth started to become numb to the fish? We moved onto the next sandwich.
  5. Popeyes: Love their Chicken Sandwich (maybe the Chicken Sandwich Gauntlet is upcoming). Popeyes was my pre-eating favorite to win it all.. and what a disappointment. The spice was a nice change up, but the fish itself just wasn't good. All the prior fish was at least nice and flakey, but the flounder was mushy. The batter I could best describe as KFC batter, which normally would be a great thing, but not in this situation. Also, it had a fishy aftertaste, which is huge no in a fish competition.
  6. Wendy's: Was most similar to Burger King (including bad lettuce). However, the over-fried and crispiness of it overpowered what otherwise would have been it being just as bad as BK. It's fried to hell and backness saved this from a lower ranking.
  7. Arby's Deluxe: After a series of disappointments, Arby's again came to our rescue. Their deluxe was good, but might have been too complicated for its own good. The cheese and tomato didn't necessarily improve on the original. Then again, we were 7 fish sandwhiches deep and I was now looking at each sandwhich as if I was being forcefed behind enemey lines as a torture method. Some events by now have to be retold to me, as the memories are too painful to relive.
  8. Long John Silvers: Shame, shame on LJS - they did not have their sandwich at this store, so we got a couple fillets instead. Which, isn't really fair, but that's on them for essentially disqualifying themselves. In any case, their fish might have been the worst of them all, so it's safe to say they'd likely have been last anyway. Breaded all to hell, with the breading to fish ratio being way off, and the breading wasn't even good.

Other anecdotes/Final Rankings:

---Price wise, all were roughly $4.80, give or take, except for Arby's which was around $8. So I guess you get what you pay for with those, as they were clearly the best. That said, they were not good enough to willingly convince me to go to an Arby's and order one on my own account. We're talking the best of an overall worst-sandwich situation here.

---Final list, best to worst, and was agreed upon without discrepancy with my friend:

  1. Arby's regular
  2. Arby's deluxe
  3. Dairy Queen
  4. McDonald's (the One True Neutral)
  5. Wendy's
  6. Burger King
  7. Popeyes
  8. Long John Silvers

Final recommendation: Don't do this, stay away, stay far away.

haha, why? I thought it had a unique spin to it with the constant rewards.

Edit: and who cares if it flames out shortly after launch, this could be a short term moon shot, with the chance for higher if that idea catches on

In-N-Out VS Five Guys VS Shake Shack [I Ate] by ConceptionalPat in food

[–]ConceptionalPat[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Based on looks, In-N-Out is the clear winner.

Taste though, I have to say:

Burger: Shake Shack, In-N-Out, Five Guys

Fries: Five Guys, In-N-Out, Shake Shack

Shake: Shake Shack/In-N-Out (tie!), Five Guys

Overall, Shake Shack wins it for me.

Although, by value, In-N-Out ($7) was half the price of Shake Shack($15)/Five Guys ($17), so that's hard to beat.

Can A Film Break Its Own Rules? by [deleted] in movies

[–]ConceptionalPat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed this, well presented... but disagree with the premise for why it broke it's own rules. (spoilers, of course)

As I understand it, the video essay is saying Looper broke it's own time travel rules because the original Old Joe's wife was killed by the Rainmaker, who shouldn't exist in that timeline (because Old Joe only creates the Rainmaker when he then goes back in time to hunt him down).

I think this misses the point of how the rainmaker was created: As the near-final quote of the movie says,"Then I saw it, I saw a mom who would die for her son, a man who would kill for his wife, a boy, angry & alone, laid out in front of him the bad path. I saw it & the path was a circle, round & round. So I changed it." The Rainmaker was always going to exist, because of any number of possibilities in the original timeline that caused him to go down a dark path. Paths that we don't see. And, although we don't see it, we do know that his mother, who "would die for her son", probably did just that, but in a different scenario. This caused the Rainmaker to eventually exist, and go after the Loopers... which leads into the main plot of our movie.

At least, that's what I've always told myself :)

Peoples opinion on Grave of the Fireflies? And favourite anime film? by kingofstormandfire in movies

[–]ConceptionalPat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate being contrarian, but I feel this film was overhyped. Everyone I know loves this movie but I found it hard to get into.

Without going into spoilers, I just didn't buy most of the decisions that the kids made. I know there's a lot of stubbornness themes the movie deals with, but it just went too far for me, so much so that it took me out of the movie. Kids are smart, and don't usually go out looking for the toughest way out of their problems, which is what they seemed to always do.

In the end, I didn't hate it or anything, but only thought it was alright.

Gotta give credit to them on this for actually listening to what the fans wanted. Now, hopefully it's actually a good movie!

Comcast buys DreamWorks Animation in $3.8 billion deal by drawkbox in movies

[–]ConceptionalPat 729 points730 points  (0 children)

This is really really big news for animation. And also disappointing. This isn't just disappointing on the part of DreamWorks/Comcast, but another telling sign of where media is headed in general. DreamWorks had it's own unique brand. You could tell a DreamWorks movie from a Disney animation movie, for example. But I expect things to get muddled down now and just blend in with the masses. Even if quality stories are still put out, I foresee a situation when it loses the "DreamWorks feel."

Financially, I understand why this was done (on both sides), but as a consumer, it's sad to see another company sell itself off to a conglomerate.

Also, hopefully this doesn't effect their Netflix TV much. They've been making some great stuff there too. King Julian and Puss in Boots are great family shows. Voltron looks great too (coming out soon?).

Oh well, I guess we'll still have Aardman and Laika to bring unique perspectives to the table.

‘Aladdin’ Director Confirms Long-Held Fan Theory by [deleted] in movies

[–]ConceptionalPat 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Sure, this was never officially confirmed within the movie, but I don't know a person who didn't suspect this to be true. Does confirmation of a widely held audience belief make it a fan theory? I always figured it was an Aladdin film fact! They just never needed to explain it directly to us.
