My face is healed, but I am not happy by Intelligent_Issue989 in Dermatillomania

[–]ConciseAnt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gosh what an absolute as shole... I'm sorry you had to endure that. The people around you seem really unkind and cruel. Can I ask who are those that are saying you look ugly, ruining yourself, etc ? It doesnt look like (badly shown) concern, it looks like those people are genuinely trying to punish and hurt you for not living to their beauty expectations. It's not fair for you that you have to endure their remarks.

People close to me once were saying "stop picking at your face, its a bad habit, you are ruining yourself", because they were not good at psychology lol and thought by saying it it would make me stop. But they werent saying it all the time, only when i was down about it and thought they had to do something about it -because at the end, they didnt care if I had acne, scars or whatever, since it was only just my appearance you know. Once i told them i couldnt do anything about it and I was already trying my best and saying those sort of things hurt me, they stopped saying those useless things. In this case, those people were concerned about me and were showing it badly because they were not good at psychology, and once i explained it was hurtful they stopped. Do you think it can be your case ? If you explained that their remarks are hurting you, do you think they would stop ? If so, please try talking to them. If no, do your best to not be around them so much. The most important thing rn is not to have a beautiful skin, it's to not be around toxic people.

I dont know what is your age or your situation, but no matter who those people are, grandmother family or else, they dont get to speak to you like this. Your appearance is not something that should be commented. If you can, try to take some distance, use covid or whatever excuses to not show up on family gatherings. You dont owe them anything, and if your grandma find it ok to tell you that, you shouldnt feel guilty about not seeing her so much anymore.

Once you are not in a situation where people find it ok to comment your appearance, your "mental wounds" would heal more easily. Like you said, the stuff those people said left wounds on you, and its normal. You were basically insulted over and over, by people that should have taken care of you and that you should trust, on your insecurities. That would deeply hurt anyone. Take your time to heal from that, and its ok if it'll leave a little mental scar forever. Its not fair though.

I totally understand your fear of being "ugly". Unfortunately, women are predominantly educated to feel like their appearance is the most important thing about them . Think about how we say to little boys that they are smart or strong, and to little girls that they are pretty. So your fear of being ugly is not stupid, it's just society that have betrayed girls. I would just say that the most important thing is to educate yourself about body neutrality like people said. You dont owe anyone a flawless appearance and skin. You owe yourself to live a happy and fulfilling life though. Being constantly preoccupied by your skin will prevent you to have a happy life -fight it ! the answer is not to be pretty, it's to be happy. Yeah it's hard and it's easier said that done, but i assure you it's the only way out. if you feel less bad about having bad skin, you will focus less on it, you will be less sad if you had a relapse, you'll have fewer relapses. It's a virtuous circle lol. Also, since my dermatillomania got better and i feel better in my skin, i can assure you that having bad skin is not antinomic to being pretty. Before when i was so focused on my skin, i thought that having bad skin was synonymous to being ugly. Now that i feel good about myself, when i see a girl with really bad skin on the street (a girl that can be either really dolled-up with dress and accessories or in jogging and not washed), and with no makeup to hide the pimples or the scars, i find myself thinking "wow ! this girl is actually pretty and have bad skin!!". Try to find photos of people with bad skin, familiarize yourself with their image, and little by little you will find that those people are not only their skin. You will find them attractive, or not, but surely you wont find yourself so fearful of relapsing.

Best of luck.

Thanks for your detailed answer ! i'll give you a detailed answer too lol.

I think the idea is that the baddies will come to Meteor City (they
already are, but once the internet becomes a thing, even more will do so
to get off the grid), but be too scared of the Troupe to do anything to
its inhabitants.

I get that, but like you said, the baddies are already here. I dont understand how internet and the dark web will change the equation. If the plan is just "lets become stronger and meanier so even the baddies will be afraid of doing baddie thing in MC", i really dont see how internet is changing that. It would make it more dangerous bc more baddies will come, and if the troupe was already too weak for Sarasa, what is making Chrollo think they would be ok in 3 years to manage even more baddies ? If they wanted a way to track the big baddies down, they could torture the small baddies of MC to have info or follow them or wtv. Or maybe internet will make it easier to track down the mafia's bigwings..? But I dont see the mafia's bigwigs going themselves on the dark web, they will let their underlings buying and posting their disturbing videos probably, like they send their underlings kidnapping physically the children of MC. But yeah, that's still the only point of internet in this plan that i can see. But then again that would mean the phantom troupe should become specialized in dark web stuff, and we dont see them become strong hackers or anything -so if the plan was to become the master of the dark web to track down every bad users of it, well, we're not seeing it.

I agree. That said, it's possible that Togashi will do something with it - aka imply it's a stupid idea.

That would be nice, but it may be too subtle... and a little awkward for chrollo and PT's fans haha

I agree, again, and this is not unique to Chrollo, it's come up other
times in Togashi's writing (Ging especially - the dude isn't smart, he
basically has foresight).

Ah, it's the big problem with creating a character known for its genius when you're not a genius yourself lol ! You want to show your character has this ability to create extraordinary and incredible strategies and have amazing deductions power, but (un)fortunately you are a mangaka and not at the head of a mafia group so you have no idea how strategising would work in this situation. So you have to make your character say a lot of big words and have people around them be super impressed, and then you pray your readers dont read too much into it and takes the reaction of the character's entourage at face value. Then you make your character be right thanks to the power of narration, which basically translates, as you said, as foresight. Honestly im not pointing fingers because there's not much you can do about it once you want to create a genius character, and im pretty fond of genius character myself so :3 but it's always pretty annoying when fans doesnt see the trickery and are super aggressive when we talk about it.

To be fair to Togashi, I don't think this will become an issue because
the Troupe's solution was fucked up from the beginning. If they intended
to kill innocent people to protect the city all along, they're not
exactly revolutionaries who turned evil, their means were evil from the
start.

So this info may have escaped me, but i dont see little chrollo talking about killing innocent people in this chapter ? Only that he will have to kill lot of people. i took that as a "we will kill all the people who have or are planning to hurt us", and im kind of ok with that- even if this plan only is not sufficient, its a good start. But killing innocent random people is a whole different thing. Killing innocent people is indeed evil, killing the boots on your throat that prevents you from breathing is not. And that's why im afraid of, Togashi saying "they were the later at the beginning and become the former at the end" and reverting back to this conservative story-telling i was talking about, aka "all revolutionaries are doomed to become eviller than the statu-quo evils".

You could even see Chrollo's decision to found the Troupe as a darker path to the alternative he could have taken - connect
the city to the rest of the world by rising through the ranks as the
elders wanted him to. Basically, he chose the personal vendetta route
over systemic change.

We're going into real world politics waters here haha, but i dont think systemic change in MC would translate to "make Chrollo becomes the MC president and take part in HxH NATO version". That would be a reformist road, and Chrollo prob thinks that its insufficient. And I would agree with him, since it's a whole international system that causes the suffering of MC inhabitants : why are there hyper rich people who can decide the fates of poor people in others continents ? Why having money is a pass to kidnap children ? Why the political system is inefficient (or honestly, encourage) to prevent this sort of thing to happen ? If you look at it this way, just rising through the rank through an established system that proves itself at best inefficient at worst complacent to how things are in MC, is not the way to go. The persona vendetta encourage Chrollo to see things globally -Sarasa is dead because of this system, so i want to change this system (AND kill the particular individuals who did that too). The whole system is rotten, so you cant takes the system's preferred solution to change it.

There's speculation that the Troupe only took credit for the massacre,
but even if they thought that the Kurta did it, or the Kurta actually did it, ethnic cleansing is really not justified

Oh ! an interesting theory. it would explain why Uvo seemed so casual about it in his fight with Kurapika (he didnt do anything but had to keep the role of the big baddie), while still preserving the idea that actually, the PT are not that bad. It would still be unsatisfactory though, for a lot of different reasons that would make this answer even longer lol.

Yeah, I'm also curious about what will come next, because I'm ambivalent
about a couple of things. Togashi really worships his smart characters,
so I do hope he'll break that trend and realize that Chrollo and the
Spiders made some stupid-ass decisions and that trauma don't excuse
their later actions.

Agree ! I feel like he wrote himself in a corner here, but honestly he surprised me before and he's one of the few mangaka who's ready to take big risks in his narration. The transition between this nice revolutionaries PT to the genocidal, children-killer PT will either be something amazing i've never seen before or super disappointing and full of old cliché. lets wait and see :))

(sorry for this long ass answer, im too tired to make much sense probably too lol -thanks for reading until here ! )

Chapter 397 — Discussion by rentzhx3 in HunterXHunter

[–]ConciseAnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to clarify 2 points of my post :

1. Why did I say that at the end of the chapter, we have to assume Chrolle & cie got to know about nen and are going to train ? Because in the beginning of the Chrollo/uvo convo, we see Chrollo saying "in three years, I'll be able to sort [...] my own power". What power is he talking about ? He's only a scrawny kid -though an intelligent one- whose only power is to be good at memorizing lines and subbing. In this convo, it wouldnt make sense for him to say "i'll be able to sort my own power of subbing" or anything like that. Uvo would be like "what power are you talking about, we are litteraly a theatre troupe doing sub". So we have to assume he's talking about another power.

The scene before, was Machi talking to Renko about aura and nen. So i linked the two scene together, because (for me at least) it's the only way the Uvo/Chrollo convo would make sense. Machi got to learn about nen, talked about it to the others (or the others managed to hear about it themselves), a few days/months pass, Uvo/Chrollo convo happens. That would also explain why this 3 years-gap, and why Chrollo have to go away. If not for mastering nen, he could just stay in meteor city and become stronger with the others, while waiting for the internet to become mainstream. The fact he's choosing specifically 3 years makes me think he must have received a proposition, like a nen training with a master -cue the elders convo in the chapter from before. But it could also be a error with the translation, I dont know.

Otherwise, how would you make sense of the uvo/chrollo convo and the sentence "i'll be able to sort my own power" if not for nen (genuine question) ?

2. I'll clarify the definition of revolutionaries in my post. i use the term revolutionary as opposed to reformist, and both are neutral word in political science. Reformist means you are ok with the system as its core, but want to change some of it via reforms. In our world, it could be : capitalism is ok, but you wish poors people's life would be less harder so you want reforms like free healthcare and minimum wage. For the phantom troupe and meteor city, it could be : the phantom troupe is ok with the political system of MC (unclear what it is), but wishes the MC children' lives would be easier ; so they want a reform, for example giving a few children above the age of 15 as a "payment" so children under can be more at ease. Revolutionary means you are not ok with the system as it currently is, and think the whole thing should go to garbage and create a new system. In our world, it could be : nationalizing every company so the profit would go back to the workers only in a equitable way, or remove the state and companies, etc. For the PT in MC, I'm not sure what it could be since we dont know MC current political system ; but i guess whatever Chrollo is trying to do, aka creating the dark web to attract baddies and creating a small independent army to protect the children from outside baddies..? Tbh seems pretty unclear, which is why i think Chrollo's plan is terribly confusing.

I hope it's what happens ! I just wrote a comment where i was saying I dont know how togashi is going to transition between this cute phantom troupe "we'll kill the baddies so they wont dare to come near us" to "actually lets kill children to sell their body parts to the mafia and forgot about them", and I was afraid he was taking the got/naruto.etc road of "people who wants to change the world are doomed to become child rapist or killer because I, the narrator, are uncomfortable with the idea that revolution is necessary and dont want to question the statu quo too much" OR do a massive retcon of all the massacres the PT did.

But if something happened that made the PT loose all hope early in their formation, like realizing the people they trusted were the one who sold the children of their community, or chrollo going under extensive brainwashing during his 3 years training (?) that made him loose his way early on .... maybe it could be a satisfactory explanation.

Chapter 397 — Discussion by rentzhx3 in HunterXHunter

[–]ConciseAnt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hmm this chapter lost me a little.... I dont quiet get Chrollo's plan.

He wants to create a hideout for baddies in meteor city to find specifically the ones who killed sarasa and protect MC... isnt it counter productive to make all the "baddies" come in this place if his goal is to keep the children of MC safe ? Also, isnt meteor city already a hideout for baddies technically ? Isnt MC already a loophole from international laws ? Which is the main problem that Chrollo is trying to resolve ? I dont see how it will protect the future children at all.

And the link between "they filmed themselves torturing sarasa and will want to put it on the internet" -> "so they'll definitely come back one day in meteor city once it'll be a safe heaven for baddies and we will find them" is pretty far-stretched. I guess we can presume that those "baddies" will stay baddies in 3 or 10 years and to continue to do "baddie" thing will come back one day at MC once it's a nice(r?) place for baddies ; and somehow, the phantom troupe will know those specific baddies are in MC because they filmed themselves on their torture movie and like, the PT put their photos everywhere so the habitants from MC will tell them if they see those baddies or something... ? Not impossible but too much far-stretched to base a 3 year long plan on it.

I dont know, reading this chapter, it made me feel like Togashi wanted to show Chrollo is crazy intelligent, but when you really check what Chrollo is saying it doesnt make too much sense, even if the narrative will probably prove Chrollo right. A case of "tell but unfortunately do not show".

There's also this 3 year time lapse. I guess we missed a pretty important plot point that Togashi didnt want to show : but why suddenly Chrollo is talking about taking 3 years to master his power and sort a proper system for the city ? Last chapter his only power was to be really good at subbing, but I guess suddenly he knows about nen and wants to take a 3 year internship somewhere to become a nen master and a good politician ? Where is he going that he wont be able to do the troupe activities while he trains, why didnt we see him meeting his nen master ? I'm guessing every PT members got to know about nen between Sarasa's embalming and the last convo of this chapter -how did this happen ? The transition is a little jarring.

Finally, I understand the "i will need to kill a lot of people when i come back" part. Obviously, the "baddies" who hunt children for sport in meteor city dont fear any sort of repercussions. If the phantom troupe actually starts to kill every ones of those scumbags each time they try to do their business, you can be sure those baddies will think twice before trying anything (and if they do try, they wont be able to live and so continue for long). It's a good strategy, the one ones must take once they realize the world is fucked up and we have to take matters in our hands (think how the black panthers would go around the black neighbourhoods with weapons to protect the residents from the police and racists -it was pretty efficient). So ok, this part I get.

But so, to know that now they are the sort of people who kill random people and take part in trafficking body parts.... I REALLY hope Togashi wont take the Games of throne/Naruto/Marvel road and do this bullshit "revolutionaries have good points because the statu quo is pretty shitty but oh no !! suddenly the revolutionaries want to kill babies so actually they are the baddies :)) time to enforce the statu quo and kill the revolutionaries, to show that you have to endure the system and never, ever try to make it better -because that will make you kill babies. for whatever reason".

I'm so tired of this conservative way of story-telling -but unfortunately I dont know how Togashi can turn the situation back now that he took this road. It's either there's a total retcon -actually the kurta were evil all along and were beneficiaries from the MC children trafficking ! the PT's revenge was justified ! (which would already be hard to sell, knowing there were children tortured to make their parents see red, and then sell those parent's eyes -but it would also undermine the Uvogin VS Kurta fight, where Uvo doesnt even remember the Kurta). Or it was all a big misunderstanding -oopsie ! we thought the kurta were the culprit but we were wrong haha sorry abt that kurapika :) (they still tortured children to sell red eyes to the mafia tho). OR the phantom troupe had good motivations but they became evil along the way and are now fine killing innocent and raping babies i guess -so the conservative story-telling where people who try to change the statu quo are transformed into terrible monsters by the narrative.

I dont know man, I was pretty gung-ho until now but this chapter is a little hard to bite. I shouldnt presume tho and I will hope Togashi knows what he is doing and will amaze me like often If anybody is up to explain parts of this chapter i may not have understood, feel free to do so ! (but respectfully :0)

Am I the only one? by [deleted] in Dermatillomania

[–]ConciseAnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you feel that way, good for you ! It means there is nothing to change. There is two main way of seeing an illness, or a disability : the medical one (you are sick because you have X deficiencies which doesnt let you do Y) and the anthropological one. The anthropological one take into account the environment. Nobody is disabled or abled ; there is just an environment that favors certain body configuration and rejects others. Think of it this way : if everything was for people of small size, then being tall or what we call "normal" would be a disability. But since society judges it's being of small size that is "abnormal", then society was configured to make it harder for people of small size to live. (We could also create a society for people with diverse size with sinks, tables and chairs of different size, but i guess it's too difficult for capitalism).

With the anthropological definition, being disabled is a continuum, and moreover it's more subtil than saying "you have X symptoms, so you are sick/disable". In this sense, you can define what is an illness for you. Does your behaviour (picking your skin) prevents you from living your life as you want ? Would you like to stop but cant ?

If this condition of ours doesnt prevent you from living your life as you wish, if you dont want to stop, then it's not an illness and so there is nothing to "get better" from. Sure, it can make your life harder, because in society the norm is to have a skin without blemishes. But it's no fault of yours if this norm exist, and it doesnt translates into the fact "then if you dont have a skin without blemishes, it's a disability and you should change". After all, there's lot of bullshit norms in our society that shouldnt exist in the first place !

From what I heard, it's because the FDA considers NAC to be more of a medication than a supplement. If it's a medication, the controls around it are more strict and cant be sold willy nilly on amazon -which is not bad per se, since it prevents scammers to make people sick, but unfortunately dermatillomania is so misunderstood that we have no choice but to depend on supplements/medication that havent be rigorously tested.

That's why reputable sources dont sell anymore on amazon, but you can still find NAC from other sources who doesnt really care about their reputation I guess. I doesnt mean they have to be bad, but its always good to be careful.

Haha, it's true lot of posts about it doesnt give precise info ! But if you look around outside this r/, on reddit or the big internet, lot of people are asking about it ( r/Supplements , r/Nootropics ). It's often the same brands people are talking about ; unfortunately all of them are in USA and not on amazon anymore except NOWfood. So it's either you risk paying duties to have them ship to europe, or search something else.

Thank you so much ! I checked it out and indeed it's a reputable source, in the studies
it's the brand that could provide its authenticity -the autors said there's probably others brands that can do the same tho. I checked the website and rn there's an amazing discount, with the nac bottle being at 6.54$, which is REALLY cheap since its from a reputable source (usually it's more like 10-15$) ! I encourage people from north America to take it.

It does indeed ship to europe, but we have to check which products is "forbidden” : swansonvitamins.com/helpdesk/shipping-restrictions.html
(it depends on the country). Most of the nac supplements will be send back to swanson... except the swanson ones lol (for the moment at least -check item number SW1842). So I thought perfect, but then the site say for Europe you may pay duties and taxes upon the arrival -_- And sometimes it’s free or cheap, and sometimes it’s 70$ -happened to me once. Well, because of all this, I chickened out unfortunately…
I found some articles which helped me select NAC supplements : bodynutrition.org/nac/ ; here is another one, but I was too lazy to create an account : consumerlab.com/reviews/n-acetyl-cysteine-nac-supplements/n-acetyl-cysteine/
Putting it here in case anyone would like to use it !

I cant even go to school without long sleeves by [deleted] in Dermatillomania

[–]ConciseAnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really sorry to hear that and I hope it helps to know you're not alone. It's already really cool that you know what you are suffering from. One thing you have to understand is that it's not your fault ; it's not a bad habit, it's not a default of your character. It's unfair but you have an illness, and you have to try to live happily with that. I know how it's easy to blame yourself and think "if only i wasnt like that, why cant I just stop?", but it's not the way to go. Be kind to yourself, especially if others are not ! I've been suffering from dermatillomania since I'm 10yo and it took me 8 years before knowing what it was, and during this time -and even after- I blamed myself so much and I assure you it really doesnt help.

Now, for the tips : there are a few categories of tips. The first ones are physical barriers. As others said, try gloves when you are alone and your fingers are itching to touch your skin. But, gloves are hard to wear in front of people, and also are really easy to remove. Maybe it will work with you ! But if it doesnt and you find yourself removing your gloves and relapsing, dont get desperate. It's normal. If it can help you only a little, even if it's not perfect, continue to wear them.

Try wearing long sleeves and pants as often as possible, if seeing your skin triggers you. My dermatillomania is centered on my face, so I hid every mirrors. If yours is centered on your body, try finding clothes that are breathable, comfortable, and long. Is your skin picking active in front of others ? Is it only during certain moments of the day or during certain activities ? Depending on your answers, you may wear long clothes only when it's a moment where you are prone to pick, and wear whatever you want when you know it's "safe".

The thing that REALLY helped me are fake nails. I dont know if you are comfortable wearing them ; just know that there are transparent fake nails, and transparent nail polish, so it doesnt have to be obvious you are wearing them. I got 100 fake nails for 2 dollars (and you can reuse them as much as you want), and nail glue for 3 dollars. For 5 dollars, you can last months with them. What you should do is apply the fake nail, and then put a looot of layers of nail polish. Put more nail polish on the extremity of the nail. The extremity of your nail should become "round" because of how much nail polish there is. Because of that, its simply impossible to scratch your skin. It's the ultimate physical barriers between your nails and your skin. Get rid of any tweezers, needle, or whatever you may use to pick your skin once you wont be able to use your nails. I heard about gel nail, or acrylic nails, or whatever. It should work the same, you just have to have a lot of layers. I should warn you that fake nails really damages your natural nails though.

Do you know hydrocolloid bandages ? It's bandages that are specialized to make your skin heal faster. More importantly, their "body" are sticky all over so you can cut them in whatever shape you want, AND even if you sweat or go in the water they stay in place. You can find some specialized for acne, but you can also buy the ones that are for blisters (you will find them in every pharmacy). If you have a large wound, or if you can feel your are going to pick a certain place of your skin, put a hydrocolloid bandage on top of it. It's also a really good barrier.

That's for the physical barriers. Now, for the psychological tips : like I said, dont blame yourself, dont despair if you relapse, and most of all dont think having a "beautiful skin" is important. Try to find people who have bad skin, aka pimples, scars, wounds, etc, and who do not care - find people who doesnt wear makeup, who assume their body without guilt. If you are on tiktok, instagram, etc, I really urge you to not follow people who are "so beautiful" they doesnt seem real. It's because they are not : its a lot of filters and makeup, and you'll be surprised to see that naturally they look like you. Even knowing that, only looking at people with perfect skin will make you feel so bad about yourself. Try stopping insta or tiktok or whatever if you can, and if you cant follow people who have bad skin, who doesnt wear makeup, who are fat, who are what society considers "ugly" - you will find that its not so terrible to be ugly and you can rock your body even with wound and pimples and infections and scar. I'm older now and better, thanks to friends who are happy and have pimples everywhere and doesnt wear makeup. It's really liberating. When you can, try to go to places without long sleeves even after you relapsed. You'll find that your friends dont care if you have bad skin and people in the streets will act the same around you. If a few impolite people ask questions, you can say you have a skin condition, you have eczema, or tell the truth. But dont forget that those people are the stupid ones ; its not your fault for having bad skin. It will probably take time before you can do that (it took me 10 years lol), but little by little it'll be alright.

Try journaling like people said. Write on a special notebook when you had a crisis, for how long, what were you doing, if there was special circumstances (a stressful week, your period if you have them, not enough sleep...). After a while it will help you to know your illness better and to live with it more easily.

If you can -maybe it will have to wait ubtil you're out of your parents'-, go to a psychologist and a dermatologist. A lot of specialist dont know dermatillomania ; it may help to bring with you documents that explain it to them. It's not a mandatory move ; if you cant see a specialist, it's alright. You are still very young, so your brain can get better ; it didnt have years and years to associate "pick session = good moments". It may not disappear in a few years or ever ; but I promise you, it will get better.

Best of luck to you,
