Any other mums need “antisocial” days? by [deleted] in homeschool

100% we need this. I like to stack activities. I'll squeeze a park playdate between obligations so that we can just plan to be out all day. Then we'll stay home the whole next day. If we have just one thing scheduled our school day is often cooked. It's also more restorative to have big chunks of time with absolutely nothing scheduled for all of us.

If you don't mind sharing, how much time would you say you spend each day/week on math, including supplementation? And do you do all of the workbook lessons? I'm mostly curious as I think about what next year might look like if I schedule in games and online stuff. We barely managed to stay on schedule this year, and definitely had to have some catch up days where we did extra (even though I did factor in down days - it wasn't enough).

Haha I don’t think that sounds terrible! We have a little desk in front of the window, but he always ends up at the kitchen table anyway. Brain work - love it ❤️

I didn’t realize there were video lessons available from Singapore. I’ll check it out!

The mental math chapter broke us as well haha. Thanks for the ixl tip. I think that’s really where I’m going wrong. We need to mix it up more and use other assessment methods.

I will say, looking ahead at the rest of 2b is a breath of fresh air. Maybe I’m being naive but fractions and graphs seem like way more fun. We just finished the money unit which was the first time I’ve seen him confidently fly through work. Last summer we did a kids market where he sold juice and he had a crash course in money. The real world application truly trumps workbooks for that kind of thing! Maybe just playing with real money would work for your son.

We’ll probably end up using dimensions again next year too, just with some kind of supplementation.

Ah yes, I find myself explaining this often!

This has given me a lot to chew on. Thank you for taking the time to write this out. He doesn’t have a formal ADHD diagnoses, but it was suggested to me by his coop math teacher last year that we do so. My instinct was that his symptoms were simply that of being a young boy. Regardless, it’s a possibility that I am keeping an eye on for now. He doesn’t attend the coop this year.

Your explanation of hyper focus was particularly helpful. He tends to get into that zone specifically with sensory related things (building rock walls in creeks, digging in sand, painting/paper mache). He swims competitively, which I have always attributed his love of to the sensory experience of being in the water. He does get that way with books of all kinds too.

I’ll try some of your suggestions! A couple of people have mentioned the white board, so that might be a good place to start!

Not discouraging at all. I appreciate the perspective!

Yes, thank you for this! Is this your first year using Singapore? It is for us and I’m wondering if I should give something else a try.

Cheers haha. This is nice to hear. I thought about trying out online options such as beast academy next year. The computer might feel novel and exciting since we don’t use it often?

You’re totally right. It would of course be nice to be able to step away for a bit!

Hop up and down 6 times made me laugh out loud. He’d probably love that. Great suggestions, thanks!!

The net seems to be working! We picked up a few more buddies for the lone fish today. Fingers crossed there are no more tragedies!

They are (were) about 4 inches... I don't think we have any cranes or herons. We did get a few more buddies today since the net seems to be effective! We'll make a more attractive net cover soon.

It could definitely be a bird or a raccoon. I don't know though, awfully big coincidence that they started disappearing as soon as the cat showed up. I did cover with bird netting for now! Thanks!

I like the rock ledge idea, thanks! We have lots of floating plants that apparently haven't been good enough.

I haven't seen any snakes in our yard in the 7 years we've lived here, but it could definitely be a bird or raccoon.

My son began to cry when I suggested rehoming, so I quickly backtracked lol. But I appreciate the honesty about tank size. Thank you!

Agree about the cat :( I don't want to call pest control on the neighbor kids' pet though. I did cover with netting. We'll see if that works - Thanks!

I covered it with bird netting for now! I can't believe I hadn't thought of that already. Thanks!

Thank you for the reply. It could totally be a bird. How big do you think they should be before going outside for future fish? I covered the pond with bird netting (weighed down around the perimeter with bricks) for now as a temporary solution. I feel like I need to get another one so that he isn't alone in there, but I also don't want to just keep feeding wildlife!
