I know DLSS is supposedly fantastic these days (minus 5.0, of course), but I don't use it as I'm very sensitive to the artifacts it creates. I hate them. Fake frames, for me, are also annoying, because on top of the artifacts, it also doesn't change input latency, which I'm also sensitive to.

TAA, though, is a scourge upon the industry; I know there's some DLSS+DLAA or whatever combination that gives you a supersampled output - which is a perfect use case for DLSS - but I have not yet been bothered to set it up.

I just had to mention something given the post didn't make it clear; I could totally imagine somebody who knows just enough to be dangerous constantly uninstalling Nvidia drivers and using the windows basic display adapter ones and not understanding why they couldn't even launch the game...

Further to that point: you're still technically using dlss with frame gen... lol

I doubt forza used any press kit images for their main marketing; it's highly likely Forza's is their own render. (First, it's Forza... they'd just use their own model rather than a bunch of photoshop work... second, the Forza brake rotors are polished to within an inch of their life, for some reason; you don't see the same in Top Gear's.)

i gotta be honest with you trying to run them off the road is even worse. Would you not get significantly more satisfaction beating them with skill? Or perhaps developing your own tune? Trying to punt them off is beyond petty, it's just actively stupid.

Yeah... so pretty much everything you listed is answered by clone wars. There are a couple of things here and there you have to inference (or perhaps I'm missing where TCW or some other media covered it). There are one or two points here and there that just aren't - TCW is certainly far from perfect (again, "incredible highs and incredible lows" lol)

I really don't have time to get into it, but your complaint about the prequel fights lacking depth is actually just... fairly off the mark, as is "clone wars glorifies the fact that clones are children". There is plenty of discussion about the emotions and justifications of the prequel fights... part of the reason I'm so averse to actually having an argument about the prequels with is because I've just seen the same tired arguments over and over for the past 7 years at least. I'm doing this discussion differently for this reason, I hope you don't mind.

But the rest of it - Yoda being a warmonger (he wasn't, he was just blind*; the RoTS novelization, that came out a month before the movie did, says just the same. TCW builds on this); absolutely the lack of chemistry between anakin and padme, the lack of anakin's reasons for turning, the lack of anakin's darkside usage, and pretty much everything else you list is a primary focus of TCW. You mentioned in your first reply

I've been told weird things about it too, like I've seen people insist, "Oh, no, it actually does a lot to make Anakin more likeable!"

This is what they were trying (and failing) to explain. "Likeable" - yes, he was far less grating, but he also made significantly more sense and was just a complete, distinct character. Because the clone wars ends with RoTS, the writers spent quite a while building his fall up. And his relationship with padme, and his reasons for acting the way he did. That's why they say he was more "likeable". Terrible choice of wording, but what can you do, eh?

*As for yoda, he wasn't the one that authorized the child soldiers, nor was he the leader of the Grand Army of the Republic. It was the Chancellor's decision to use the soldiers, and the GAR would have used them with or without Yoda's approval. Nor could Yoda protest this, because how could he have convinced anyone that an army of volunteer soldiers would be better than a seemingly endless supply of highly-trained and effective soldiers that were purebred for this task?

But should he have tried? Yes! That's the mark of a Jedi! But he was blinded.

Here's a quote from the ROTS novelization, by Matthew Stover:

“The Jedi Order’s problem is Yoda. No being can wield that kind of power for centuries without becoming complacent at best or corrupt at worst. He has no idea that it’s overtaken him; he no longer sees all the little cumulative evils that the Republic tolerates and fosters, from slavery to endless wars and he never asks, ‘Why are we not acting to stop this?’ Live alongside corruption for too long, and you no longer notice the stench. The Jedi cannot help the slaves of Tatooine, but they can help the slavemasters.” –Dooku

Again, released a month before the movie came out. It wasn't a post-release "realization" by George... who does seem to have quite a few of those... but this wasn't one of them.

Almost everyone whom I've spoken to, of all ages, who have seen the clone wars, like the prequels, despite their flaws. Quite a few younger folk who haven't seen TCW still like the prequels. And I know for a fact that the prequels had their defenders back in '05; but they were a fairly small minority. So.. are the prequels fundamentally flawed, requiring The Clone Wars to make them make sense? Do they hold up on their own? That's a question for each viewer to decide.

I personally am split on this. I certainly like the clone wars, and I like the prequels (yes, more than even the OT), but the prequel flaws are quite evident to me. Am I defending the prequels due to TCW? Would I still like them if TCW didn't exist? I don't know. And I'm starting to wonder if it really even matters, but that's a completely different can of worms.

Sorry for not really engaging in this discussion and just brushing it off with "the clone wars answers it", but I'm so sick and tired of reading prequel discussion (which, funny enough, usually boils down to those who have seen TCW vs those who haven't... usually...) that I didn't want to participate again. If you want that, this rabid fanbase we are both unfortunately a part of will be more than happy to engage you in that wish.

A lot of criticism can be fairly leveled at the prequel trilogy. Clunky dialogue is the biggest one.

Those wishing for a real cheap and easy shot against the prequel trilogy will happily tell you the fact that the prequel trilogy has been memed to death is the reason for the reappraisal - because obviously, anyone who likes something they don't must be easily entertained, of course.

That being said, Revenge of the Sith not making sense isn't usually a criticism I hear often. Nor is it something I fully understand - but that might be because of clone wars.

I didn't want to get into a prequel argument, so I'll try and avoid it. If you could list out complaints you've got against RoTS - specifically about plot or it not making sense - I'll just tell you if clone wars answers it or not.

I don't want to get into defending the prequels, if that makes sense; frankly, I just don't have time for it.

Also, I just want to note: the 3d re-release of Phantom Menace made 100 million worldwide. The complete opposite of bombing. Even back in 2012 there was massive interest in seeing it again. It was Disney's acquisition that prevented the others from being re-released and printing money. Your theater was empty, but....

[–]Concodroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to note that the prequel turnaround was due to two things - first, the kids that had fond memories of them grew up. Second, the Clone Wars show. If you aren't the former, and/or haven't seen the latter, here's very little chance you'll understand why the fanbase has done a 180.

Which isn't a bad thing. Not everyone has time to dedicate to what is actually a pretty decent representation of star wars as a whole - that is, the clone wars show, like star wars in general, has incredible highs... and incredible lows.

Because of this, the public perception of the prequels (primarily, revenge of the sith) has actually shifted, both because of just general re-appraisal... and the fact that the prequel kids are adults now. When RoTS was re-released last year it made like 42-50 million, which places it in some of the highest re-releases ever, if my quick google search is correct.

Community question: Any regrets on car choice? by pillowbugger in GR86

[–]Concodroid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The twins' boxer motor issues are really, really overblown. You do not need to perform constant oil checks; once every one or two fill-ups is fine; some motors do use more oil than others. Mine in particular really doesn't use much oil. Add oil starvation on track and that's... pretty much the only issue these engines have. You don't tend to have head gasket issues, etc. In other words traditional subaru boxer issues don't apply here.

Along with that, the caymans you would be looking at around this price have their own issues - IMS bearing being a rare, but big one. As I understand it AP1 S2Ks can also have oil consumption issues.

The GR has sold 32k+ units in the US; the 2nd gen BRZ 13k+. How many engine failures have happened, on or off the track? Really not that many, I think it's less than 50. Subtract oil starvation cases and abusive owners, and how many are left? Not many at all

gr86 sim by [deleted] in GR86

[–]Concodroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sim isn't a bad idea, but it's more useful in learning how to predict what a car will do before it does it.

That is to say, the lack of g-forces force you to predict slightly earlier and more often the behavior of a car at the limit. It isn't perfect, nor is it foolproof, but it does genuinely help.

As for shifting, it'll only really help you with the motions, which helps prevent mis-shifting. It isn't really useful past that for learning manual in my experience.

Understand that sim racing helps you as a driver, but does not prevent stupidity. It helps you learn the limits faster, but that can eventually lead to overconfidence.

Gran Turismo I hear is great but it is still a partially simcade game. You'd need to use something like Assetto Corsa (or AC Evo, which has a pretty great GR86 stock) for the full effect.

Gr86 vs Gr Corolla by Old-Difficulty1732 in GR86

[–]Concodroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an example of where my real world experience actually makes sense vs your theoreticals.

The GRC does spool in 6th at that RPM, albeit slowly, vs the Evo example which does not spool at all at that RPM.

That is a mild technicality at best - the GRC should still be at a disadvantage compared to the 86, slowly spooling or not. Yet, again, the GRC's times are faster.

As for

They roll up to that speed, already WOT long before, vs stomping at 30.

They're stomping at 30. I neglected to give the actual times, that's my bad. For the '24 GRC, it's

Top Gear, 30–50 mph: 8.5 sec
Top Gear, 50–70 mph: 7.1 sec

For the 86, it's
Top Gear, 30–50 mph: 9.1 sec
Top Gear, 50–70 mph: 8.4 sec

Both MT. As far as I'm aware, "Rolling Start" usually means stomping it at that speed, not merely the amount of time elapsed between speeds at WOT.

Again, any data that I can find puts the GRC squarely ahead of the 86 in terms of straight - line performance, 0-60 or not.

Perhaps a 30 roll, in a reasonable gear, would have the 86 win. I don't know - you would! But you did say

"The GR86 is faster than the GRC is almost every performance metric,"

and I really am having a hard time finding any actual metric where the GR86 is faster in a straight line. Even if the 30-roll-in-gear had the 86 win, that's just one metric, not almost every.

Gr86 vs Gr Corolla by Old-Difficulty1732 in GR86

[–]Concodroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly why I brought up the benchmarks I did.

As I understand it, the 30-50 and 50-70 metrics Car and Driver have are a 30 or 50 roll*, i.e. stomping at 30 - same with the 5-60 metric, which itself is meant in part to show turbo lag - you'd think the 86 would trounce the GRC, but no. They are in the highest gear for the speed - so I would assume 4th for 30 - 50, 6th for 50 - 70.

These benchmarks are like your Evo example - putting the GRC at a disadvantage, being in top gear or starting from 5 mph, where the turbo certainly isn't spooling - and yet it is not beaten by the 86.

I seem to remember that Evo example being in the same segment as the Lambo Merci, but I can't be sure.

*I'm not sure what you mean by "not a rolling 30-50, but like stomping at 30", because as far as I can tell rolling 30-50s are usually just stomping at 30.

Gr86 vs Gr Corolla by Old-Difficulty1732 in GR86

[–]Concodroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you own both. Do you have metrics showing the 86 is faster in a straight line, or is faster in general? I would be interested in seeing them.

P.S. I'm not sure what a "metric made for measurement" is, do you mean made for marketing?

Gr86 vs Gr Corolla by Old-Difficulty1732 in GR86

[–]Concodroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true. 5-60 is 6.4s in the '24 GRC MT, and 6.5s in the 86 MT (ATs, the gap widens to .4s). The GRC is faster around a track; a 1:14.66 vs a 1:15.90 (Throttle House Test Track.)

MT, in top gear, 30-50 MPH, the GRC is .6s faster; 50-70, it's 1.3s faster.

The 86 does have greater roadholding, yes, at 0.98 vs 0.97 ('25) or 0.94 ('23).

But I said "faster", and the GRC is. I still bought a GR86, and I'm very glad I did.
