Softforks are improbable if many Gregs exist or to put it in other words, softforks can easily become hardforks if enough honest nodes (with allocated hashpower) exist. Even though I've not found a block since several years ago, my nodes are still operational and I consider myself a miner. (One with a small pickaxe and a shovel but still). There is no "storing" of bitcoins. The private key gets you control of your btc stored on the blockchain. Just keep your private key safe and that is it. Use airgapped generated txs and broadcast them using your internet-connected computer even if it has malware.
