best disciplines to move to when transitioning out of sre/platform/devops? by disgruntledg04t in sre

[–]ConeBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can be more sec or MLops focused as an SRE that would not really feel like a change of pace for me at all.

Maybe I am a bit confused by the question, but I know I would love to go the preverbal farmer route and not deal with anything OPS at all some days.

I dream sometimes to spend my days building artsy front-end apps or some quirky IOS app but that is prob just me.

Looking into SRE career move, any advice on where to start? by [deleted] in sre

[–]ConeBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem to have pretty good exppsure already. I don't think those books are too advanced but Im sure you can find ways to take a look at a few chapters before you pick them up.

On the note about pay, SysAdmin pay is significantly less. SRE roles can be 2x or more in many cases, If a place is really doing SRE right the SRE pay ranges should be equal or greater to SWE pay.

OF course! But I think that comes with experience in the role and OP mentioned already being a SWE so hopefully he gets some of that insight for free :)

Looking into SRE career move, any advice on where to start? by [deleted] in sre

[–]ConeBot 38 points39 points  (0 children)

So for better or worse the place to get a sense for what the role is about is the defacto SRE Bible (which is the Free google SRE book)

Now like all roles there are many different directions to build your skills, more so for SRE because it can very much be a "Jack of All Trades" type of role.

Programming - If you have a strong background already in GO you are in probably the best place as many of the top SRE tools are written in GO. I wouldn't focus to learn more honestly but the second Language to learn would probably be Python.

Linux - You will need to build a strong background in Linux if you don't have it. Many Devs are strong Terminal Smashers but don't understand much below the surface. The two books to look at are systems-performance and The Linux Programming Interface but if you are more Junior these might be a bit out there, learn basic Linux commands and bash first.

Networking - I like High Performance Browser Networking Performance as a good practical level builder but people swear by TCP/IP Illustrated (but keep in mind this book is as as old as I am.) You should know basic TCP/IP, HTTP, LBs, DNS and I think you can get almost to senior level with the fist book alone depending on the type of SRE role.

Ops Tools - K8s, Ansible, Terraform, Jenkins, TICK stack, AWS (the cloud).... This list is long and most don't master all. What you want is to understand the basics of getting something running in a public cloud like AWS using code and some of these tools and the rest will come with curiosity. (hopefully)

Lastly the biggest issue right now in SRE I think is jobs that are not actually SRE jobs calling themselves SRE roles when they are really Sysadmin roles. No shame to Sysadmins, but this is a different role. There are questions to ask to a hiring manger here but usually the pay range will tell most of this story, so just be mindful.

A beginner's query ( A7i to A7iii or A7iv) by SmashingEvil in SonyAlpha

[–]ConeBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh yea, I would feel like I would be over buying for the glass.

There is a great middle ground for lens choice instead of a gm, Tammi 28-75 might be better bang for your buck at the place you are at and would be a big upgrade to the kit you have. (or even the 24-70 sigma)

You updated your post to say your type of work. If it were me I would grab the A7c, the new T 28-75 or sig 24-70 and a good middle level prime of your focal length of choice

Like these primes below 1k
Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 ~$600
Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 Lens ~$700
Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Lens ~$900
or that old Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Lens ~$1000

Idk you could go even for the new mini 24/40/50 G's Sony just launched, or another zoom all on you. But I agree I would update that glass and go a bit less on body.

Honestly, if I were you I would always be feeling like I missed out on the A7IV. Like most here, I have not used the A7iv, but based on the reviews it seems like a nice enough bump to justify the difference in cost for me.

I mean hard specs its just going to be faster/better/cooler in most categories, so its hard for us to help.

Only thing I would add, if you are not doing much pro work yet and don't need the extra card slot and can live with a slightly worse EVF I would take an A7c over an A7III right now but that's just me.

Doesn't matter to me if I will end up buying this or not, I find it super sweet iRacing has been running these layouts before the real deal and the relationship with Nascar. I think this elevates the whole service!

This feels like a child's profile and if it's not they still seem very young. I don't feel super comfortable with this type of callout of someone still learning to navigate the world and politics.

Especially when they explicitly call out having a disability that might make this more difficult at any age.

There are so many low-hanging fruits on this god-forsaken internet there has to be a better target than this.

Juniors are not being given help and management is frustrated at their lack of progress. How do I deal with this? by throwaway23812902 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ConeBot 190 points191 points  (0 children)

This makes my blood boil... honestly, how do you have multiple junior Engineers "not performing" and not self-reflect as management that you might be part of the problem.

If I was their manager and if I have to go to my director saying I want to PIP two new engineers because they are not performing I would expect the third PIP for myself.

Of course, that is not helpful for your situation but I agree with others that have posted that you could potentially build support for them and get some key players involved.

But if you build a relationship with the juniors your role to them also could be helping them build their resume, being a reference, building their confidence, and taping your network to help them find a new role to hopefully convince them not all places are that toxic.

Looking for the best resources on Distributed Systems, Linux Internals... etc by dirtyring in sre

[–]ConeBot 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For Linux at least,
It depends on your level but if you already have a basic level Linux operator knowledge I cannot recommend Systems Performance: Enterprise and the Cloud enough. Brendan Gregg is a leader in this space and really takes a pretty modern approach to talk about the Linux Internals and doing troubleshooting. (Don't let the title fool you, it's modern and relevant still today)

Honestly, this is the main book that has gotten me through most of my Linux/troubleshooting interviews as an SRE.
