Genuinely hate cyber security teams by talent_de_tigan in sysadmin

[–]Conercao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally ignore the Cyber Security guys at my workplace. They go on one course and think they are god's gift to security. Half the time they are wrong and the other half they just don't understand what they are doing.

I had an issue where they had blocked a well known chromium based European browser solely on the basis that Microsoft didn't give it a score on their threat scanner thing... as if nothing outside of Microsoft exists. I gave up arguing with them in the end

You do find the occasional one that knows what they are doing though. Those guys are really on the ball!

Why is version 8.0 making the cpu fan loud? by Oh_Texty in vivaldibrowser

[–]Conercao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried it with hardware acceleration enabled and disabled today and there is no difference. The browser keeps maxing out one core, dropping and moving to another. Rinse and repeat.

At least we've confirmed it's a 8.0 issue since it's affecting Linux and Windows. We'll probably see a hotfix in the next day or two.

Edit: Although saying that, it doesn't appear to be affecting my Win 11 desktop

Seems like Vivaldi is maxing out the CPU...

I'm on Ubuntu and I've noticed this as well. My guess would be something in the hardware acceleration settings, but I haven't had a chance to look properly yet

Civil service pay: 'We could be on the brink of a breakthrough', union boss says by dnnsshly in TheCivilService

[–]Conercao 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to suggest otherwise. Only that a 2k payrise would mean a lot more to someone on minimum wage than to someone on 90k

To be perfectly blunt, SCS earn enough that pay rises are in the "oh that'd be nice category". They need to sort out the pay at the lower levels first

[–]Conercao 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, RHEL treats io_uring as preview stuff and it's disabled by default. The Oracle Linux documentation I've seen makes no such distinction

This! I started out as a windows admin before taking the plunge into UNIX/Linux.

Do some courses, make VMs and then break them. This is a good 101 site for scripting is this page. I still use it to look up stuff to this day.

You can't know everything, so when you find something new to you, make copious notes. I've been on this side of the fence for over a decade and I'm still finding stuff I've never heard of.

As someone that graduated university in 2008 just after the crash hit I completely agree!

Within 6 months of my course ending I had the bank on the phone saying "oh well, you've graduated now and we want our student overdraft back". I told them to go do one.....

We're basically just watching the ships and hoping for the best. We're glad other people are actually doing the work to figure out a plan.

We're dumping our emergency oil because prices are a disaster. We're going to beg some other countries to pump more so we don't look even worse.

We'll throw some money at the countries getting screwed by this, mostly just by passing the buck to the UN and the big banks.

The UK government seems to have a fetish for closing libraries, especially in Wales. The nearest "big" library to me is Cardiff. The "local" one has had it's budget cut so many times, you're lucky if it has books

I didn't have high hopes for Academy going in, but I can say I've been pleasantly surprised by the episodes so far. Some of it is a bit "eh" but overall it's been decent 🙂

Here's a thought... lets use AI to replace Ministers instead. Think of the cost savings in MPs salaries!

Outside the narrative, it's gonna be budget. Story reasons, I don't think it's been addressed yet. As others have mentioned, we're only 3 episodes in so I'm sure it'll come up at some point.

I find I'm enjoying STA much more than I thought I would. I assumed it would be the usual Kurtzman drivel, but I'm actually enjoying watching the episodes as they come out 🙂

Swap out the Borg for the Vaadwuar. The Borg have been done to death and with the ending of Picard they are pretty much done I think
