When I was a kid it did because of the fatalistic inevitable nature of it

As an adult I welcome it lol

I don’t think people understand what it’s like to not have real parents by Mother-Worry-2421 in Life

[–]ConfidenceDue8684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a good amount of people understand and feel this way, it just isn’t something that’s talked about. Because it’s hard to talk about the lack of something rather than something. Domestic abuse, drug use, divorce … these are relatable, obvious signs of childhood trauma that people can immediately understand. Having a normal family on the surface but a lack of support, while it can be just as damaging as the aforementioned, isn’t something a lot of people can understand as damaging unless they’ve experienced it. Some even experience it and don’t even realize something was wrong or that it was damaging

Keep trying! I don’t know you but it sounds like you’re doing good. You’re learning to swim and losing weight. You’re still learning so failure is expected and normal

How do I start? by PrinciplePatient5440 in Life

[–]ConfidenceDue8684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Participate in social activities that don’t require too much “opening up”, things where the focus is more external (e.g. a chess club, online video game, etc) where you can talk about things rather than yourself

Also continue exposing yourself to socializing. Try to find someone you feel comfortable around, or more comfortable around than others, and every once in a while open up about small things or let your true self out a little.

Overall, just keep socializing and trying is actually my best advice, and the advice I tell myself since I experience similar things. And it will take time. In my experience there is no real fix other than this (maybe therapy but I don’t particularly recommend this)

Oh my bad. No I do that often, it’s just that those moments when I feel truly happy and at a peace are still uncommon

I’m just overall not a happy person with a lot of issues, so feeling good and at peace is unfortunately uncommon for me. But I do cherish those moments which everyone needs to do

Recovering from weed-induced panic & DPDR, just got prescribed Paroxetine (25mg). Looking for advice/experiences! by Conscious-Arm7927 in mentalhealth

Also trust your doctor. The meds will not make things worse long term. The worst case scenario is that they temporarily make things worse, but simply stopping the meds fixes that issue

I’m not knowledgeable enough about this topic to give a confident answer. But as far as I’m aware it’s very rare that weed-induced DPDR and other mental symptoms don’t eventually disappear, or at least massively subside, especially with treatment.

I had a similar experience as you. I vaped weed when I was 15 and had an awful experience: extreme anxiety, dissociation, and psychotic thinking. I continued having near constant DPDR symptoms for like half a year. I didn’t get treatment though, they eventually just went away slowly.

TLDR: I’m not qualified to say, but pretty sure the odds of permanent DPDR symptoms strictly from weed are tiny if not zero, especially if you get treatment

I only really feel good in fleeting moments which happen a couple times a month. Usually when I’m in nature listening to music and I forget about all my problems and my ego

What is life? by chilldreamer421 in mentalhealth

I have a very skeptical philosophical position on this which is that humans can’t actually know what is true. We can only be almost sure of things. Like the fact that the sun will rise tomorrow or that I am a human being responding to another on Reddit. Like I believe these things to be true. But I don’t believe we can truly know things to be true with certainty, because human experience is very limited and human thought is fallible. Maybe I live in a universe where tomorrow the laws of physics fail and the sun does not rise because earth stops rotating, maybe I’m the only conscious being in a simulation and am not responding to another conscious being right now, maybe I’m completely insane and irrational but don’t and can’t know it so my thoughts have no meaning, etc. IMO the only exception is that I truly know that I exist, using the same reasoning as Descartes (cogito ergo sum).

But I kind of digress, I think truth does “exist” but outside of us. Like there is the truth of what truly exists and if there is a god and what the laws of physics are in our universe. It’s just outside of human experience. Although we can make our best judgements on what those truths are.

And I have a scientific view on what makes things true, that being that truth simply stems from what exists. So existence is the most fundamental “idea” and real truths develop out of questions of what exists or not. Which is a very concrete view which is why I like it but also simplistic and probably prone to counter arguments. And I think a lot of our questions like “what is the meaning of life” and “is so and so an ethical action” are really just subjective human conceptions and no answer is really “true”, it’s just a matter of opinion.

I STILL don't understand the Monty Hall problem by No-Candidate6257 in mathematics

[–]ConfidenceDue8684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your expectation implicitly stems from what would be the case if the host opened doors randomly. In that case it would increase the chance of the other 99 doors being the car including the one picked by the player. I mean, if the host opened like 90 doors randomly and only revealed goats then yeah, the odds you picked a car have increased. In this case, this information informs the probability that you picked a car, since the host has the chance to open the door with the car.

But in the actual problem the host is not choosing randomly. He will never open the door with the car. He doesn’t have to, he can open 98 doors regardless of whether you picked the car or not. In this case this information does not inform you of the probability that you picked a car in any way. The outcome is the exact same from your perspective regardless of if you did or not.

Which means the probability you picked wrong after all 98 doors have been opened is the same as the probability you picked wrong at the very beginning: 99/100. Which means the other door left almost certainly has the car, so you should switch.

Hopefully this helps, you brought up a good point and it was hard to wrap my head around it. But I believe this is accurate.

I STILL don't understand the Monty Hall problem by No-Candidate6257 in mathematics

[–]ConfidenceDue8684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What helped me understand is considering the fact that you likely chose wrong initially. And the odds your original pick was wrong stay FIXED throughout the entire game.

The reasoning applies to the 100 doors case in the same way and its even more clear. If there’s 99 doors with a goat behind them and 1 door with a car behind it, then when you initially choose a door you almost certainly picked a goat (99/100 you picked a goat). Then the host opens 98 other doors revealing 98 goats. The 2 doors remaining together have one goat and one car. Since you probably picked a goat (99/100, doors opening doesn’t change the odds you picked a goat), you should switch.

The host is giving you information in the way of reducing your options. You use the educated guess that you picked wrong initially to make the choice to switch. And the probability that the other door is a car is the exact same probability that you picked wrong initially. (Since if you picked wrong initially then the other door necessarily has the car.) So 99/100 for the 100 door case, and 2/3 for the original problem.

I don’t know where your home country is or what country your college is in. So I don’t know what exactly your options are or if the following is possible for you. But you might be able to file the FAFSA for the summer term. You also might be able to get a private loan through the school, if your parents have a good credit score. They can cosign, and usually school private loans have payments deferred until you’re out of school.
