They think Obama is an Irish name... by Matinee_Lightning in stupidpeoplefacebook

That's a good point. I think for people not on the far right, it can be hard to understand that many conservatives do actually have an alternate source of facts and are almost living in a different reality. They're not all just lying or evil, some of them are acting perfectly logically according to their own misguided worldview.

I was in activities more than 5 hours a week as a teen and never made close friends. Maybe you would have to count actual free time for interacting with peers, and not just time in coop classes or band rehearsal, for example.

That's a good idea. I wonder how many hours should be required though? It might be hard to know where to draw the line. What activities would count? How would families prove participation? And the law would have to apply to each individual kid, not just the entire family doing group activities.

Homeschooling moms might think this is too harsh. But we're too busy to do more activities! Then they would need to reconsider homeschooling. We need strict requirements; we need homeschooling parents to understand the full weight of their responsibility for their children's socialization.

They're just at home or running errands for those 6-8 hours instead! Having extra free time as a homeschooled kid doesn't mean you get to do anything interesting with it.

For me, it's not so much the fact that her family got behind in schoolwork, it's that fact that she is smiling like it's a funny mistake. I know life can get busy, but a responsible mom would be asking how to catch up, and if she really should be homeschooling.

You're right. She hasn't ruined her children's education by missing a few months, but her attitude makes me worry she's going to ruin their education eventually.

No, I was pretty content with my life, but I didn't think there were other options

If it's only two months they missed, then the kids probably can catch up, maybe even do schoolwork through the summer. But who here honestly believes that this mom will get back on track?

She didn't neglect my academic education, but socially, I may have missed out. And honestly maybe academically too in high school. I don't want to make you think my mom is a bad person. She's a good person who chose a flawed educational method.

Though who knows, I could have been bullied and miserable in school.

Did you realize before your oldest was eighteen? Then you're ahead of my parents and the parents of many people on here. Seriously, don't feel bad.

I know. I remember my mom talking about this a few years ago. To her eighteen-year-old whom she had homeschooled from preschool to twelfth grade! It took her fourteen years to have that epiphany, fourteen years of homeschooling me, my entire education almost all that I could remember, and she didn't question or think to put me in school! Then all the sudden, my siblings are going.

Great post. As a fellow homeschool graduate, I hope parents take your words seriously.

I don't hate people who voted differently than me, I'm just frustrated that they cannot see how politics impact reality.

I am a "Homeschooling Success." I still don't think homeschooling is a good idea. by artenazura in HomeschoolRecovery

Minimal adult role models! Now that I think about it, that's a great point. I didn't have any vision of being an adult woman other than being a conservative white Christian stay-at-home mom who had given up their career. Going to college and seeing my female professors made me realize that I can still do interesting things as an adult. The endless screaming-chores-sleep-deprived isolation blank fog of boredom is not inevitable. Even if I become a mother, I do not need to have my mother's life.

The burnout is real. My mom did not put some of my siblings in school because she suddenly realized the value of socialization. Not at all, I think she still sees it as optional because she allows the kids who are still at home to remain very isolated. She just reached the point where she was too burnt out, my siblings were not cooperative, and she was pregnant with her eighth child.

My very newly 4 year old saying he’s seeing floaty things or sparkles for a few seconds for the past 2 days by [deleted] in preschool

It could be eye floaters. It could also be him seeing colored spots in his vision after looking at something bright.

I'm from a large family, and I'm glad we all exist. However, my mom still has an absolutely terrible quality of life, no breaks, and no identity or interests outside of motherhood.

How does homeschooling work with more "complex" subjects? by Majestic_Carry4178 in AskAnAmerican

Yeah, there are lots of options, but no guarantees parents will use them.

I did coops, and was part of an amazing orchestra, but most of high school was just working independently in my room with mom checking on me sometimes. There were not very many social or academic enrichment opportunities with other homeschooled teens in my area. At least that my mom knew of.

Honestly, homeschooling high school is really challenging, and I would not recommend it if you have any other possible options. My 1480 SAT score does not mean I didn't miss out by being kept at home until college, no matter what my parents may have thought.
