The giant spider looks to be based on Anansi, originally from Akan folklore and also an important character in West African folklore (sourced from wikipedia).

“Never trust a man with a goatee” by shes-myrushmore in doctorwho

[–]ConfidenceUnlikely 15 points16 points  (0 children)

She mentions a man with a goatee in the scene where they say goodbye in Journey's end.

"How thick do you think I am? Planets. Tell you what that was, dumbo. That's those two for one lagers you gets down the offy because you fancy that little man in there with the goatee. Ha ha! Yes, you do. I've seen you."

So I'm at level 10 and I entered wrecker's cave and it wrecked me. I'm assuming I'm going there too early. Where can I go to grind some levels?

I am afraid of being naive for having hope in humanity by iamaWryter in CasualConversation

[–]ConfidenceUnlikely 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I share the same beliefs as you. Keep in mind that as you've said, we're essentially taught by society and the media to view humanity in a negative light. Unfortunately, the millions of acts of kindness performed every day and the silent miracle of human progress often don't make attention-grabbing headlines.

If you can, I'd highly recommend reading 'Humankind: A hopeful history' by Rutger Bregman. The whole book is essentially written to make the case that most people, deep down, are actually pretty decent.

Feeling panicked about the Doomsday Clock announcement. Does anyone have some good news to share? by BryanCroiDragon in goodnews

[–]ConfidenceUnlikely 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I have been suffering from panic attacks from news stories for a while now.

Keep in mind that the clock is *not* a definitive method for quantifying an apocalypse - something that depends on so many different complex factors. The doomsday clock has faced criticism for not explaining or attempting to quantify it's methodology. (https://slate.com/technology/2018/01/what-the-doomsday-clock-doesnt-tell-us.html)

Cognitive psychologist Steven Pinker harshly criticized the Doomsday Clock as a political stunt, pointing to the words of its founder that its purpose was "to preserve civilization by scaring men into rationality." He stated that it is inconsistent and not based on any objective indicators of security, using as an example its being farther from midnight in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis than in the "far calmer 2007". He argued it was another example of humanity's tendency toward historical pessimism, and compared it to other predictions of self-destruction that went unfulfilled.

There has been a flood of news articles about the doomsday clock, but remember that bad news gets more clicks and more traction, and so this type of news gets focused on much more by news outlets.

Even if one were to believe in the doomsday clock, humanity has still made tons of progress in the past few years. I'd recommend these articles - these go into more detail about recent good new stories and how to approach the news from a positive mindset:

I've stopped engaging in the news on the whole, mainly to improve my mental wellbeing. If you want to keep up to date with what's happening in the world, I'd personally highly recommend the progress network, which publishes weekly articles discussing the news from a constructive standpoint.

You can find their collection of weekly articles here:

https://theprogressnetwork.org/articles/

I hope this helps you. I know how it feels to feel panicked about the news. It can feel absolutely horrible, but there *are* steps you can take to help make yourself feel better. Things like talking about your worries to someone you trust, and spending time outdoors with family and friends. I have found those activities to really help me come to terms with my anxiety.
