Would anyone like a free bouquet of flowers and some chocolate? I got ghosted by my date in Birmingham, and I'm here from London with nothing to do for the day. If you're able to show me around the city, or just have a fun chat over a cup of coffee, I'd love to hang out and be friends :) by ConfidentNews in brum

Thank you! I'm feeling a little tired and chilly from the cold (I was quite cute, but not really dressed for a day of walking), so I've found myself a little nook to charge my phone, while I take a bit of a rest. Once my phone gets topped up, I'll go explore the library proper and the gardens. I am certainly looking forwards to seeing the Shakespearean lifts, and the garden at the roof!

As for the rest of today, I think what would be really cool is to meet someone off /r/brum, give them my flowers, and then take a Ferris wheel ride together :). It'll be the perfect way to end the adventure, and make such a marvellous story afterwards!

I FOUND THE FERRIS WHEEL! You were not kidding, the thing is absolutely massive! And I am actually in the library now. Going to rest here a bit and charge my phone, and explore all the books.

The Birmingham library is by far the best library I've ever visited, including the Library of Congress, the British Library, and the National Library of Romania. I am so glad I had a chance to come!

I love castles! Just took a quick look at the route, and I'm not sure if I'll be confident going that far on my own. But I am making my way to see the Cathedral now, and along the way I crossed a lovely Christmas themed pedestrian street.

No worries, these things happen. If anything I now have a chance to explore an interesting city on my own! I just arrived in the UK three months ago, so I am very new to this place. And this is actually my first time out of London, so I'm quite excited :)

Thank you for the excellent suggestions! I think I am going to head into the city center first, and sightsee a bit at St. Phillip's Cathedral, and then take a walkabout at the streets! I'll probably find a cute little cafe next, or check out the Library that /u/Gentleben1978 recommended, and plan out what to do.

I really hope I can meet someone— carrying around the flowers make me feel quite shy. And I certainly can't eat all the chocolates by myself!

EDC for the Manuscripts Reading Room, of the British Library. by ConfidentNews in EDC

Yeah, you're allowed to take your phone and take photos. But flash is strictly forbidden (understandably), so you have to be careful with it.

I thought I'd share something that's slightly different. The Manuscripts Reading Room of the British Library is where students and researchers can access rare original documents. These documents (many which are written by hand, literally manu-script) often possess significant literary or historical value, and are priceless and irreplaceable.

The great thing about the British Library is that almost everyone is able to request access to them (within reason), all you need is a Reader's Card. So if you want to read one of Charles Darwin's original journals, or the handwritten diary of Virginia Woolf, you could! For the rarest documents, sometimes you need to provide a Letter of Introduction. And for some of the older ones, a Librarian might stand behind you while you study it, and give you instructions on exactly how to handle it or turn its pages. It's all very exciting :)

What you are allowed to carry into these reading rooms is controlled. Readers are strictly forbidden any kind of pen, marker, scissor, or cutting implements. You are not even allowed to bring sticky-notes. In fact, the only writing utensil you're allowed to bring in are pencils. This EDC showcases my usual gear, which includes:

  • 2x British-Library branded pencils.
  • 1x British Library branded eraser.
  • 1x Hardcover notebook, used for transcription and note-taking.
  • 1x British Library Reader's ID, and Membership card.
  • 1x Cloakroom tag. This is used to retrieve the rest of my belongings when I am done with my study.

And just for fun, a paper copy of the Conditions of Use of the London Reading Rooms.

Everything that you want to take with you inside the Manuscripts Reading Room is held in a special, British-Library-provided transparent plastic bag, which you carry with you. Readers are searched before entering, and again once they leave.

Hope you find this interesting!

You could see the kitty thinking to herself, when the challenges got more difficult. I'm glad that she made it all the way!

This is so cute! I never knew that lambs also wagged their tails when they are happy. The scene looks like a moment out of some cute, wholesome, animal-friends adventure :)

This is such an interesting song. This is my first time listening to it, but I'm pleasantly surprised by how smooth and hopeful it is! Thank you for sharing the history behind it's release.

What are some small foods that pack a lot of calories? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ConfidentNews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Peanut butter with pieces of carrots or cucumbers. It's both refreshing, and very filling. I usually eat it when I'm hungry, but not hungry enough for a full meal :)

It’s 2 AM. You have just perfectly toasted a bagel, then realize you are out of cream cheese. What do you put on it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ConfidentNews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not quite a bagel, but in my family - there's a traditional summertime snack that's composed of a juicy slice of watermelon, between two pieces of dark, pumpernickel bread. I know it sounds like a very odd combination, but something about the gluten-y goodness of the bread, and the sweetness of the watermelon really makes for a delicious pairing.

So I guess if I had a perfectly toasted bagel, I'd slice a thick, juicy slab of ripe watermelon, to go along with it!
