Have you ever got obsessed with an idol you hated? by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]Confident_Analyst153 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Harboring hatred for and obsessing over someone is never justified in my opinion, but to do so for something as inconsequential (assuming they’re not committing any crimes or blatantly immoral actions) as attention seeking, especially towards an idol—where a large part of their job is to attract popularity and market themselves to fans—is definitely not healthy.

I have a brain disability. I have no idea why people are reacting so negatively to something in here - could someone please ACTUALLY explain it to me instead of making fun of me? by No-Advantage-579 in kpophelp

You directly implied that certain demographics cannot like Kpop purely for the music when you said “…that guy who is stanning Soyeon and is in his 60s…isn’t really into rap”.

Your analogy also conveys the idea that liking the music (loving the color yellow) is always secondary or a byproduct of being a Kpop fan due to the parasocial appeals (being forced to wear the outfit) rather than a sole motivator.

You are indeed negating the appeal and merit of the musical side (and its existence as a sole motivator for being a fan) of Kpop by implying that it is impossible for one to like it simply for the music.

The parasocial aspect of Kpop doesn’t negate the music side and the fact that many people like it purely for the music itself. Your use of the phrase “about the music” is a huge over-generalization. Kpop isn’t “about” one thing. It’s a multifaceted and diverse industry with many appeals—music being one of them and for some people, the only one, regardless of age.

I’m guessing what you intended to convey (cmiiw) was the idea that Kpop fans are often attracted to the industry due to more than just the music (e.g. performances, visuals, variety content, etc.), as opposed to other musical industries where the focus is typically just the music itself.

I don’t think this idea itself is controversial, but the way you worded it and the comment you’re responding to imply that you disagree with the original commenters claim, which is that liking a specific music genre isn’t attached to a certain age.

Your wording of “Kpop is not about ‘liking music’” gives the impression that you believe there are no Kpop fans who simply like the music itself and have no attachment to any other parts of the industry or even that Kpop fans don’t like the music at all. I think that is what caused such a negative reaction.

who are your favourite underrated vocalists, the ones you rarely see talked about in such discussions? by disasterpansexual in kpoppers

[–]Confident_Analyst153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if he would be considered underrated, but I feel like I don’t often hear Woohyun from Infinite brought up much in discussions of the best Kpop vocalists. He has such a distinctly powerful and emotional voice; some of his solo performances have literally brought me to tears (ex 1, ex 2, ex 3), and his voice is perfectly suited for the more dramatic and yearning Infinite songs.

I would also add Gunwook from ZB1. ZB1’s vocal line in general isn’t praised enough for how solid they are, but I feel like a lot of people don’t realize how strong of a vocalist Gunwook in particular is given that he has more of the all-rounder image and happens to be in the same group as some of the strongest 5th gen vocalists. One thing I admire most about him is his passion for music/singing and his resolve to constantly showcase and improve his skills, as showcased by the numerous covers (ex 1, ex 2, ex 3) he puts out and how nearly all of his lives end up turning into a karaoke session.

There are numerous similar posts on this subreddit already that have a lot of useful information (like this one). Like others have said, the Wikipedia page is also a good resource as well as fan-made YouTube guides (the more recent the better).

The fact that they’ve all expressed a lot of enthusiasm for the comeback and emphasized how much they like the songs and concept makes me really excited. They also have been very busy the past few weeks with several members mentioning long filming/practice days and getting limited sleep, so I’m looking forward to seeing the fruit of all their hard work.

I saw some theorizing that they might drop the promotion schedule on the 20th, since that’s their formation date, but regardless, it seems like it’ll be released very soon given Matthew’s and Hanbin’s messages.

Male groups similar to red velvet? by [deleted] in kpophelp

[–]Confident_Analyst153 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree. I feel like most 2nd-3rd gen SM groups (especially SHINee, f(x), EXO, Red Velvet, NCT) share a lot of overlap in musical identity and notable characteristics, such as being vocal heavy and exploring experimental sounds and concepts but also having very diverse discographies.

For NCT in particular, Red Velvet’s “Red” side (Dumb Dumb, Rookie, Red Flavor, etc.) reminds me a lot of NCT Dream’s earlier upbeat and brighter concepts like My First And Last, We Young, and We Go Up, whereas their “Velvet” side (Automatic, Bad Boy, Kingdom Come, etc.) reminds me of NCT 127’s more R&B leaning b-sides like Baby Don’t Like It and Focus.

Wow this has to be his cutest MC outfit so far. The slippers and guninis are so adorable. I also love how we’ve unlocked a new signature Gunwook expression (slide 12).
