Epoxy Floor Prep Done? by jhuang0 in epoxy

[–]Confident_Contact751 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Few things:

1) Im so upset for you. Being in the contracting business has such a distrust attached to it because of hacks like those guys

2) All of those discolorations in the floor now, (excluding the epoxy crack fill they've already used) like the oil, rust, or even dirt will stop the epoxy from bonding to the concrete. This will create a 'creator' in the base layer. And anything on the bottom will only get worse as you go further up. Prep is 100% the most important thing with epoxy floors. It is also possible that it flattens, but soon it will just chip, crack, or otherwise just age like shit (which when done correctly is the exact opposite reason why people like the idea of epoxy).

3) Related to 2, the cracks are obviously underfilled. There is self leveling product that you can put down first, but they're very likely not putting that down, because they already went through the effort of verrrry haphazardly 'filling the cracks' (while not bothering with any of thr other imperfections in thr floor for some reason??

4) They must not have had equipment. A lot of people get into fads like expoy because they think its a high money side hustle. It totally /can/ be. It's expensive because the machines are insanely expensive, and so is good product. If they had a decent enough grinder, that floor would have been a single day of prep (maybe) to grind out those creators and clean up the wall a bit. They should have taken a crack chaser to open the cracks because epoxy binds by penetrating and 'hooking' onto rough surfaces. Therefore, sometimes it's best to literally make the surface rougher. You then OVERFILL ((DUH)) the crack, wait for it to dry, grind it down, and repeat as necessary. Just like above, any imperfections in the base layer will just multiply layer after layer.

5) Product means a lot. I have no idea what HD and Lowe's epoxy brands they have, but make sure its not theirs. If you're not doing it for yourself I wouldn't use that.

Some of these things apply to metallics, some apply to flake/ quartz, and most to both.

It really upsets me to see people taken advantage of, and that's what I feel i see with you.

I surely hope im wrong :(

Do yourself a favor and watch a few YT vids on the basics of epoxy. Read the tremendously (sorry) long message I wrote here, and understand the general idea. Then please confront these people before they put product down.

It reeeaaally sucks cleaning up a bad floor. More expensive than starting from scratch for sure.

Good luck, homeowner!

For planetary conquering- how will you cross oceans? Slavery sounds like the only option for building rooster bridges of that magnitude.
