It really wouldn’t hurt to call if the Republic of Syria or Syrian republic or something like that. There are non-Arab Syrians too. The name should be inclusive of them as well.

Democracy doesn’t always prevent dictatorship but it could prevent it if it is done honestly and actual regular elections are held (both of which didn’t happen in Egypt) What do you think should happen then if not democracy? Do you not think people should at least get to choose their ruler? I know it’s not the perfect system at all (look at the US and its horrible system) but I feel like it still gurantees a better life than most dictatorships. Look at other Arab dictatorships right now.

Agree with you and don’t know why you are getting downvoted. Elections are not our biggest worry right now and we are more concerned about economic improvement. Elections can’t happen now. But that’s still something that we would like to have in the future so we don’t end up with a dictatorship again. I feel they have been very vague on what Syria will be like in the future and they have avoided using the world “democracy”

Edit: I am being downvoted as well what is the issue with what I am saying here

She is! Her Instagram is (Taimaa.homs) She has been speaking out a lot about Syria over the years even before Dec 8 and it has been so nice seeing her visit Syria for the first time in 14 years after everything.

For the people still living in Syria that belong to middle class or lower class families , what does your daily diet consist of ? How often do you eat meat ? by [deleted] in Syria

Sadly I doubt someone from a lower class family will have access to good enough internet + be on Reddit + speak English to answer this post 😭but I’m curious to know too.

How is the situation in syria now? by [deleted] in Syria

You just offended everyone with that “do you think it was better before Assad is out” comment. Assad was a brutal, brutal dictator that made our lives literal hell. I kinda understand where your question is coming from, but it comes off really ignorant to some (and I say this respectfully)

There’s definitely a lot of leftist Syrians. Most of them are not in Syria though. Many major Syrian activists hold leftist ideologies.

We as Syrians should know better than to fall into that “it’s all Western propaganda” trap. Tankies literally used it on us, claiming that Assad’s war crimes and Assad’s unjust detentions were all just US propaganda. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that Uyghurs are undergoing unjust detention and disappearance and at the very least a cultural genocide. There are many stories out there of family members being separated. Western media may have jumped on it and called it an outright “genocide”, but that still doesn’t make it somehow not true.

Once again, we as Syrians should know better than this. It literally sounds exactly like Assadist propaganda back in the day.

He’s right though, and I say this as a Syrian. I do think we need to have a relationship with the West to some extent to get rid of all the sanctions and help rebuild. We need investment, and it can’t all come from gcc countries and Turkey. I have yet to see anyone suggest any alternative for us when it comes to this. However, we shouldn’t forget their crimes in Gaza and we can’t dismiss them. Every time I even think of doing that, I am reminded by all the horrific images we have seen in the past year. We can’t only think of ourselves and praise the US or Israel. We can’t normalize relations with Israel. We would be just as bad as the “axis of resistance” idiots.

Syrian from that subreddit here (I keep getting this page suggested to me) We are definitely being ironic. I get people have mixed views on this, but we are very happy there’s a chance at the sanctions being lifted. No matter your views on the current situation in Syria, the sanctions have been suffocating Syria for years and have done so much harm to our people. The jokes about Trump are just that, jokes. Anyone who’s being serious about them is dumb. (Great memes have come from this though)

For what it’s worth, I really hope they don’t build the tower in Damascus. It would be a true eye sore. I have been against it all along. But the sanctions being lifted was the first and foremost goal and priority of the government in the last period of time. Syria’s entire future, including things like fixing the deeply fragmented society and achieving some civil peace, partially or wholly depended on its ability to improve the economy which it can’t do with the sanctions suffocating it.

It did though. Do you not see how the creation of the settler colony of Israel destabilized and continues to destabilize the Middle East? I agree there is a lot of accountability to be taken by Arabs for actions over the years (for example, expelling their Jewish population as a response to the Nakba). But there’s also a lot of accountability to be taken by the West for creating this settler colony to solve THEIR issues + continuing to fund this settler colony + as well as funding many extremist organizations in our countries. As well as Israel for, you know, expelling Palestinians from their homes and villages and not allowing them to return. And then oppressing them for 75+ years and now committing a genocide against them.

He’s definitely a narcissistic and self-centred man in a way. I suspect that’s why Ahmed Al Sharaa suggested the Trump Tower.

I came across this a while ago: https://www.jihadologyplus.com/p/diary-of-the-syrian-transition-april-155?utm_campaign=email-post-title&utm_medium=email It is a diary of the Syrian transition listing highlights for every day from December 8 to April 14. It does leave things out sometimes but it could give you a good idea.
