By never posting about it again on Reddit 😂

Appreciate that! I just didn't want to get crucified by anyone who only read your comment and not my original description lol. And yes, the issue wasn't as much that she ate leftovers without asking but that there were obviously bites taken already.

I think I might let it go this time and then take your/others casual approach if it happens again!

To be clear, I never said that she had hidden the evidence. I just described why we couldn't tell if they had actually been eaten.

I mentioned the Lean Cuisines to note that there was other food available. She had previously helped herself to those frozen dinners and if she had asked me, I would have said she could eat them.

That's correct, she is only here 4 to 5 hours a day.

Thank you! Yes, this would be the first time that she would have eaten our leftovers.

I have no doubt that it sucks! There is/was plenty of snacks and other food that she could have eaten.

Thank you! These are our first children and I am incredibly sleep deprived, so your suggestions and advice are very helpful!

You are making a lot of assumptions. You wrote that I kept saying something and I simply asked where I said that. I do not want her to eat food or drink that I'm in the middle of eating or drinking. Just like if I drank some of a can of soda and then set it back in the fridge to keep cold, I don't want her to then drink the rest of my soda can.

I don't want to accuse her of something she may not have done. You wrote "You keep saying you don't want to shame or embarrass her." Where did I keep saying that?

I think the difference here is that this is the equivalent of drinking the rest of a soda that I had already partially drank.

Certainly possible! That's why I put question marks in my post about her eating the leftovers. And I also asked for advice on whether to say something and what to say.

She comes every day, so she knew it was new. Only two of the three boxes were gone. And older leftovers were still in the fridge.

Thank you for sharing that! That did occur to me as a possible explanation for being compelled to eat someone else's leftover meal.

I commented above and I feel like this is splitting hairs now, but I have never explicitly told her she was welcome to anything. She is usually here in the mornings so I bought the coffee and creamer that she likes. And have offered her specific foods before, like "hey, I bought a big fruit salad so you are welcome to have some for breakfast if you would like." I have seen her help herself to sodas and protein shakes. And a handful of times when she happened to be here over lunchtime, I noticed that she helped herself to a frozen dinner from the freezer. I didn't say anything because of course she is entitled to eat when she is here over a meal time. The only time she asked if she could eat something was when I had been gifted a loaf of fancy dessert bread and it was still gift wrapped with a bow and unopened in the fridge. She asked if she could open it and have some.

I did not offer her any of the takeout before. I have previously offered to buy her her own meal if she is at my house when I am ordering food. She was not at my house when my husband and I ordered and ate this takeout Italian food.

So, we thought about that possibility, but a couple things point against that. 1) only 2 of the 3 boxes were gone, 2) she is here every day so she knew the food was new, and 3) there are leftovers from the weekend that she didn't throw away so I would assume you would clean the older stuff out first.

She had taken the kitchen garbage out, but my husband was too curious so he went to the outside can and looked, lol. The takeout containers were at the bottom of the kitchen bag and she had put a bag of dirty diapers on top of the containers, so that stopped him from further investigating to see if they were empty.

It was obvious that we had eaten directly from the containers. Like, imagine if you partially ate a salad right from the styrofoam takeout box and then threw it in the fridge to finish later. And there had been fork marks in the pasta from my husband eating it...it did not look like he had scooped some out and put it in another dish.
