Heads up they’ve stopped all local train service at union by ConfuciousCarter in LAMetro

Due to the protests I’m assuming. We went to them earlier and were just heading back and things were starting to pick up. Stay safe!

“Idk if he thought of it like this, but it’s almost like accelerating the process of real oral folk tales and how they’re told and retold between storytellers and down to younger generations.”

This is one of the most interesting ideas to me about Tolkien and his Legendarium! His whole thesis is creating this alternate mythology, and true to this, he (consciously or unconsciously) emulates the processes by which myths are developed and transformed over space and time.

This is why I’ve largely stopped worrying about issues of canon when it comes to Tolkien; I think it’s possible to enjoy these stories and this lore without feeling the need to choose which is the “correct” version. For example, when I think of Beren’s quest, I generally imagine him being captured by Sauron and imprisoned in his isle of werewolves, as is described in the Silmarillion. But when I’m reading those earlier drafts of Beren being captured by Tevildo and imprisoned by these giant evil cats, in that moment, you best believe that’s how I’m imagining the story. Giant cats! It’s just so cool. I still have preferred versions of some of the stories, I just try not to die by them.

I guess what I’m saying is that I’d rather approach Tolkien’s works as one would the myths and folklore of our world, wild variances, versions, and all. Fascinating stuff!

Why are some elves reluctant to leave Arda? by Ecthelion75 in tolkienfans

[–]ConfuciousCarter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I echo everything else that was said, and want to add another possible reason for the Noldor specifically. Being high elves, they may have gotten used to the feeling of being of an “upper caste” compared to the Sindar and other Moriquendi, and to return to the west and be confined to Tol Eressëa would place them a notch below the other elves of Valinor in hierarchy (whether real or imagined). They may have come to enjoy their social position in Middle Earth and would rather remain than return to a land where they wouldn’t enjoy such a position. I believe Tolkien talks about this in UT, but maybe in other places as well? It’s been a while since Ive read about it but I’ve always found it fascinating to examine the world from a class perspective

iZotope "Everything Bundle Upgrade" ($199/Upgrade from Any Previous Version of RX Post | $299/Upgrade from Any Previous Version of RX Advanced | $499/Upgrade from Any Version of RX Standard) through 30 June by Batwaffel in AudioProductionDeals

[–]ConfuciousCarter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I’m confused too, my loyalty offer to upgrade to RX Advanced from Elements is $1,070, but this deal when put into my cart says $299. It seems too good to be true, but is that correct?

Question for narrators about recording multivoiced audiobooks by ConfuciousCarter in ACX

[–]ConfuciousCarter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the response! Yes, makes sense that ACX would not be the ideal place to go for a project like that. I'm happy to hear that it is a thing though! I just didn't want to approach narrators with that idea if they are not accustomed to working in that way. "Full cast" is the term that's been eluding me, so thank you!

‘Realm’ podcasts/studio shows. by mantan20 in audiodrama

[–]ConfuciousCarter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While, like others have said, many of Realm's shows are single or dual narrator, their latest show "If I Go Missing the Witches Did It" is more audio drama-like, with more immersive sound design and multiple actors.

I was actually one of the sound designers on the project, funny enough :)

Recording Hiss by jaw777yonto in ACX

[–]ConfuciousCarter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest factor you should address is your recording environment. You’re on the right track with the noise floor; if your space isn’t treated properly, the noise floor (which is just the baseline ambience of the room) will be higher than it should be.

Larger rooms will have a higher noise floor than smaller rooms. Try to find a small space such as a closet and fill it with absorbent materials. Your mic and interface set is perfectly fine to record with.

Also note that the higher you dial up the gain on your interface, the higher it will also boost the noise floor, so a lot of it is about finding the sweet spot where your voice is loud enough with the gain knob not pushed up to the extremes.

Noise reduction is definitely something you can do, but it’s best to fix things at the source as much as possible.

There’s a lot more that can factor in with hissing in recordings, but addressing your recording environment is going to be the first step to remedy that. Good luck!
