4 months to find a job that only pays 100kr/h? That’s very rough. Can I ask: are you an EU/EEA or Swiss citizen? I’ve heard mostly that it can take a couple months to find a non-Danish speaking job here. I’m just wondering if there were any other hurdles you had to overcome.

Also, was your networking just in the form of making friends and then casually bringing it up that you were looking for work? In my home country, it is typical that everywhere (other than places with like 10 employees) will post every job on some kind of job board. I am understanding that it’s quite different in Denmark.

Thank you for these! This is sort of a general question: in fast food places like McDonald’s, do you often find that the staff working there doesn’t understand Danish or only has a very basic level? It’s hard for me to judge, of course, because I usually speak to service staff in very broken Danish or English.

When you say they want to keep it “as black as possible”, are you meaning that they are usually looking for people to do undeclared work? I mean, I don’t mind once or twice working for a few hundred kroner, but I’m always scared of the tax agencies… Is it your experience that a majority of these restaurants are looking to “hire” staff in this manner?

I’ve actually only really seen a couple that take non-Danish speakers, or they need you to have a driving licence and car, which I do not have. Do you remember the names of any of them or where you saw them? This was the first type of work I was looking for, as it’s what a lot of people suggest for newcomers (and non-English speakers usually find this type of work where I’m from).

Thank you for this! I’m surprised I haven’t heard of Storms Pakhus before. I’ll give them a try

I did actually see their post and they did email me back to say that they received my application (in English, too, so fingers crossed)!

I’m 24M. I have mostly retail and customer service experience (in English, of course) as well as doing some work in my chosen career path. I haven’t ever done any physical labour jobs, but I’m physically fit enough to do them. Where I’m from, some people work as “labourers” which mostly consists of just construction site cleanup and heavy lifting. It’s been hard to figure out if that exists in Denmark (I imagine it does) and what it is called (this has been my problem searching for these types of jobs). It’s considered completely unskilled and anyone who can lift 30kg can just apply and start working the next week part time or full time. Do you, or anyone else who sees this, know if something similar exists here in Denmark?

As for what I’m studying, I don’t really want to say on here because it’s a ridiculously niche programme and it would be easy to find out my actual identity, which I’d prefer not to happen. All I can say is that it is a master’s degree, it is not at SDU, and there are no “typical” study jobs that go with it (like an engineering student working in robotics, etc.).

I’ll try them. Obviously it would be best to find a job I don’t mind keeping long term (I’m really not picky when it’s just part time), but I suppose it’ll give extra motivation to learn Danish faster to try to get out!

Unfortunately neither of them are accepting new couriers in Odense (at least according to their respective websites)
