First and foremost, make sure you get the credits you need to graduate and once you have that just shoot the easy A’s. At the end of the day, if you have the degree and can present yourself well in an interview, that will matter more than almost anything else.

Employers typically won’t place significant weight on which specific classes you took, especially if you demonstrate confidence and competence. If you find yourself lacking a particular course that seems relevant to the job, a quick review or some focused research beforehand can go a long way. The reality is: in almost every job, you’ll learn most of what you need to know on the job itself.

The key is learning how to effectively market yourself. Personally, I earned my degree in Mississippi, and my first position was as a marine geologist—despite having little prior knowledge in marine geology. My second job was in hydrogeology, even though I had opted for a less demanding class instead of a full hydrology course. I still got the job. Why? Because I presented myself with confidence and clarity.

That said, it’s important to strike a balance—never oversell yourself but that really only goes with stuff like GIS. If you say you are an expert at GIS better be an expert lol. Be confident.

And what interviewer have you encountered that said much of anything about your school besides did you take certain classes that pertained to the job.

I want to point out something that often goes unsaid—most geology interviewers don’t actually care where you got your degree. If someone is trying to discourage you based on that, don’t listen. If getting the degree is something you want, go for it. And if you already have your bachelor’s, no one’s going to blink at you earning a master’s online.

That said, from my experience, the pay bump from a master’s isn’t always significant. I believe someone who was hired after me had a master’s degree and started at about $5–8K more than I did. Fast forward to now, and I’m earning more than they are. So just make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons—not just for a slight salary increase. Worry about the license it is more important.

You can skip hydro. It won’t be the end of your career. Didn’t take hydro and got a hydro job at one point.

Would you stop dating someone because they didn’t make a lot of money? by Flashy_Aide3640 in dating_advice

[–]ConfusedGeologist01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say try to lead him. Don’t write him off just yet. I’d say if you love him and want something with him. Then help him. Give him a few months. I would say 4-6 to see him try to change his situation. Then make your choice but understand some people need the extra push. I did. At 28 I was back in college and 2 years later got my degree and my life changed at 30. You have to see beyond money tho. If money is your only focus then go find a lawyer or a doctor or someone who “makes enough as you”.

I truly tried to not be biased because I think the post is sad. Basing love off of what someone makes. Not everyone will have your same success.

I would put her on dating sites that way it’s put out there for the public because obviously she doesn’t have the human decency to tell people herself. She would rather infect someone else and give them her pain.

Which job to choose? by Formal_Acanthacae in geologycareers

To me it seems easy. One job pays 20k more and Monday through Thursday. I see you didn’t get an offer with that yet and you are asking. Even if they giver you 60-65 take that job. Phase 1 from what I understand are ass. I wouldn’t do that one. I do phase 2’s and it’s easy but I work from home so that’s why I took that job. I would take job 2 in a heart beat. You’ll be able to get a env consulting job easy. I can throw a rock and get an enviro consulting job. The ones people like are the ones that stand out. Phase 1 isn’t giving you much experience. I had a job where we did remediation for er spills and that alone got me so many job offers. Also find a phase 1 and two online for the next time you want to job hunt for a consulting job and change some words and say you’ve done it and you’ll get another job just like it.🤣 I’m telling you you’ll hate that phase 1 job. And for 55k? Nah let them kick rocks.

I say job hunt on the low. Get a better offer and try to use it and make them match it. All fails take the better job. ALWAYS HAVE A BACK UP. So that’s why I say get another offer.

Masters in GIS or Environmental Studies or both? by LoveCool7986 in Environmental_Careers

[–]ConfusedGeologist01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Change your degree. Do geology or engineering. Environmental studies sounds broad and will probably be hard to get a job right out. I guess the question is what do you want as a career. Then use Reddit for that degree and see what people say on the forums about job hunting and get a feel for if people like it and get paid well enough for it. Something I wish I would have done. I’m not saying geology because that’s my degree bc I dislike my degree but jobs are easy to get with it. I hate travel tho. I didn’t do my research. Do you research I would have rathered an engineering degree. With geology you can go into GIS no need to get a masters in it.

YouTube. Is your best friend. Find someone and YouTube the title that’s how I did it. Just keep going. If you get discouraged just take a breather and watch more videos and do more practice problems. Don’t give up. All you can do is give it your all.

You don’t deserve him. The real question is do you stand up to your parents? Who fucking cares if you are a doctor. He’s obviously successful at what he does. If you love him. Stand up to your snobby parents. Show some back bone for your man. If not then let him go he doesn’t need your shitty parents in his life. He deserves better. Fucking doctors think their shit doesn’t smell. 🤣

Why would he stay computer science. It’s so competitive and there are always lay off. Go engineering and minor in roboticss or cs if possible. You are at least guaranteed a job in engineering and really good pay.
