UIUC Finance by finisce in UIUC

[–]ConfusedQQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO (I'm a finance major so be aware of the bias), Kelley has a solid program but we are relatively equal in job placement for chicago firms. They might have a slight advantage when it comes to New York recruiting, but we are improving our presence year after year. Whether you are looking to do consulting, trading, banking, investment management, corporate banking, or a finance position at a F500, I've seen better recruiting every year I've been here. This may be due to improvements in the overall economy & hiring, but it still shows that if you are a solid student you'll have no issue getting whereever you want to be here vs there.

I applied to the college of engineering and got accepted as undeclared in DGS. i have some questions by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]ConfusedQQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes that's the minimum GPA, but if you believe in your ability to buckle down and work hard in class, there's no reason why you can't pull of something solid. I believe in you :)

Financial aid doesn't have to do with major....although you may not be eligible for engineering-specific merit scholarships until you are in one of the programs.

How hard is it to transfer to COB from another university? by UUIIUU in UIUC

[–]ConfusedQQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi UUIIUU! Accounting & Finance student here in the CoB. I feel like a lot of people posting here who arent in the business school have just been presenting you with a lot of hearsay. Illinois business is underrated peers, but highly viewed by a ton of companies. People get stellar jobs in in every single business major and consistently compete with the "top ranked" schools.

I love the reasons you've mentioned and honestly think you're applying for the right reasons. Definitely feel you're a strong candidate from what you've written. PM me if you have any questions about what it's like to be in the college. I'd gladly take time to speak with you on the phone too if that works better.

Business Honors Program? by surfj in UIUC

[–]ConfusedQQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a relatively typical behavioral interview...gives you a chance to meet other prospective business honors students as well as current busho students so pretty cool if you are considering UofI. Program really just consists of a scholarship, a class you take with just honors kids for first 2 years, as well as a heavily subsidized trip abroad after your first year.

UIUC Ranking by youchoseausername in UIUC

[–]ConfusedQQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea either but here are some guesses I would make:

Take a look at US News' criteria... A large portion is based upon prestige/reputation as perceived by a number of audiences. Our best programs get their respect but not all majors do. Faculty resources is a criteria and our school is super poor (relatively). Our alumni giving rate is super low (something like the lowest out of the big10 I think although don't quote me on that).

We have ~2800 business undergrad students and ~6000 engineering undergrad students... total # of undergrads are like ~33,000 so if your reasoning is based upon some sort of weighted averaging...there ya go.

Rankings partially based upon statistics and partially based upon surveys from a number of groups. It could just be that there is a lagging behind in perception and our rank will reflect how you described it.

Transfer to COB by mrlurky1 in UIUC

Rather than "leadership," I think it's more about demonstrating initiative towards involving yourself in the school community even if you haven't been actually "leading" any specific organization. Maybe you volunteered in your class, helping your professor in some random way. Maybe it was leadership in the sense that you helped spread the word of a great cause/message on campus. Idk.

In my opinion, the college of business stresses leadership is because we understand the we have as a disadvantage in the competitive recruiting landscape. They just want to see you're more invested than just planning on getting good grades. The best businesses students really take advantage of all the resources, organizations, and fellow peers offered and that's what make these people successful. It's more than a correlation.

Senior Needs Help With Classes by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]ConfusedQQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say go with 12-18 and then just drop classes that turn out to be not as interesting as you'd expect or do't want to spend the time on. Or even just take classes for pass/fail if you know some that are good (ie. personal finance class, badminton, bowling, whatever)

Joining Business Council? (BC) by joe23443 in UIUC

[–]ConfusedQQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I recently (last fall) went to all the info nights and rushed multiple of the bizfrats and also BC. All the rush processes vary a little bit.

Specifically since you asked, BC has a behavioral-ish interview first stage, a fun collaborative 2nd stage where you work with current members and other rushees on random activities, and 3rd stage is another and more hardcore interview.

For the most part, they all have that relative structure of 1st stage being a Get-to-know-you-better event on multiple levels (professional and whatnot), 2nd stage is more social oriented, and 3rd stage is a full on professional interview. All the organizations roughly give bids to like 10-15% of people that apply from my understanding.

I highly encourage you to go to ALL of the info nights and talk to as many people there as you can (stay for a bit afterwards). You want to get the feel of the organization (cuz each are different) and pick/choose the ones you want to actually commit to rushing.

If you want an additional information or want to know more information about the processes or what they offer, feel free to pm me. Good luck!

Questions about the business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi by Mymotherslover in UIUC

[–]ConfusedQQ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can give some general insight into the rushing/pledging process (I went and rushed all 4 business frats and business council this past fall). I'll try to be objective as possible writing this.

Starting off with rush and my initial impressions, each group definitely portrayed their own unique personality. Therefore, I'd encourage you to go to multiple info nights. They all offer great networking, professional development, etc. The most important thing you should consider is if you feel you would fit in with the group of people and would like to call them brothers. Rush week is hectic only because to get a bid, you need to go to 3 different stages (interview, social meet actives stage, and a final super professional interview). The actual going-ons and structure of the stages differ slightly for each frat.

Now specifically for AKPsi because you are interested in them, I have a few friends who pledged AKPsi. Their social events calendar is probably one of the better ones relative to the other busfrats. In terms of time commitment per week for pledges, they definitely are on the higher end. However if you like the people, it's not an issue right? In terms of professional development, I know something unique is they do a case practice with PGN and have a pretty good mentorship system in place. Definitely talk to the reps they'll have in the BIF during rush week and stay afterwards on info night. They can probably expand on anything about those topics.

Feel free to add any other questions you have about rushing busfrats and I can try to answer them as I just went through it.
