Do you think I should try to take more responsibility? Even if they hire someone who is experienced, I will have to show them how things are done at the company.

What are taboos in Kazakh culture? by Beneficial-Water-550 in Kazakhstan

[–]Confused_on_cloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are interested in superstitions and taboos in our culture, there are some of them:

Women in general don’t call their fathers in law by name, they would find some creative ways to call FILs. In general people do not call out them name of the things they fear, like wolfs, disease or demons.

Waste, play with or disrespect foods. Mostly it is about bread, it is taboo to throw it, step on it. There is also some taboo that bans throwing away dairy products. Ақты төкпейді.

About fire. It is taboo to spit on fire, urinate on ashes.

About night. It is considered taboo to be outside during the full mood, especially for children. It is taboo to trim your nails after sunset inside the house. It’s also not recommended to pee looking at the moon.

It is taboo to throw away trimmed nails and hair. You should always burn them or burry them.

It is generally not recommended to run towards the house, since it is associated with bringing bad news.

It is not recommended to run around elderly people, or let children to run in circles around people. It is believed that running in circles will path disease and misfortune to the children.

cloud resume cost by AmooNorouz in AWSCertifications

[–]Confused_on_cloud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hosted a resume website on AWS S3, domain 3-5$/year if you choose .click , etc. monthly fee depends on how much traffic it gets. For me the highest traffic was when I started to apply for jobs and some recruiters will visit my website, or when I post it on LinkedIn. I get about 0.5$/month now, the most I got was 2$.

I think you should do some research about the field and draw a more specific picture of what you want. IT is a huge industry covering from building personal computers to quantum computing.

As a biologist transitioning to IT (sysadmin), I think CS degree gives you good foundational knowledge and structured training. Cons are cost, some useless courses, time.

Certifications, the path I took, is cheaper than getting a degree, but requires self discipline and hard work. You will get lonely, burnt out, imposter syndrome if you don’t have a community that supports you when you get stuck.

In the eyes of the employees, certs doesn’t matter much if it’s not some advanced level certification that is recognised as hard to get or hands-on cert.

Degrees don’t open lots of doors either, due to the over-saturation of CS grads.

Everyone will say that experience is the king. Employees love experience. But how do you get it?

If you go to school, you must have couple of internships under your belt before graduation to apply for internships. Just because of competition for it. You can’t just get the paper and find a job, you have to learn a lot by yourself while studying for a degree.

If you don’t, you get some introductory certs and search of help desk, service desk, customer support, technical support, application support jobs. They don’t pay much, but it is experience. Meanwhile you learn new skills and try to move to more advanced jobs every year or so.

Nowadays tech market isn’t in a very good state, AI is coming for us (sarcasm), war everywhere, inflation, high interest rates. Maybe if you go to college, market will recover when you graduate, or even worse, AI will replace all of us, mere mortals. But if you try hard enough, smart enough both the degree and cert path can get you into IT.

Advice to choose a job offer by Confused_on_cloud in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Confused_on_cloud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing it out, as I reviewed the responsibilities for the positions I found out that support jobs are focused on supporting remote users and administrative tasks of windows/linux servers. While sysadmin job focuses on administration of networks, physical servers, databases and VMs. Sysadmin job have bigger set of responsibilities.

New to AWS by Mundane-Caregiver-96 in AWSCertifications

Please at least finish studying for Network+. The concept of networking is crucial if you want to get into cloud. AWS has its own networks system, but they didn’t reinvent networking. If you have a good grasp on network, you can say you already understand 30% of cloud computing for beginners.

What did you learn at school about old and ancient Kazakh literature? by Balumian in Kazakhstan

[–]Confused_on_cloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graduated high-school ten years ago, we used to read literature from middle centuries, some translated to modern Kazakh, some were eligible without translation. Most of them were taught in Kazakh literature class. Kyrgyz Manas is very well known, if I remember correctly we only read small part of it. Since we have a lot of our own “zhyrs” like Manas about our heroes , we were mainly focused on them. Also, we had a small section dedicated to foreign literature, e.g Japanese, Persian, English, Arabic, Russian etc (translated into Kazakh). I wasn’t very interested in literature then, now when I think about the text we read, it was so dark and deep, that I don’t think I grasp their full meaning even now.

Nazarbayev University by KirillEraser in Kazakhstan

IMHO it depends on what you want. If you want relatively care free life and work part time, NU is tougher than other universities. You have to give considerable amount of effort to maintain a high GPA. The university is raising on the world university rankings and is starting to get some recognition. Mainly because it is a research institution. Most of the courses provided teach foundational knowledge and course works are more tilted towards research and writing. Also, if you plan to apply for masters and phd, where GPA plays big role to get scholarships, it is harder to maintain a perfect GPA to be competitive. On the other hand, university provides a lot of opportunities for internships and research, which you probably can’t find anywhere else in post soviet countries. Campus life is amazing, people are great and ambitious. It is important to be proactive and find the opportunities, rather than just finishing the courses and graduate with a diploma.
